Queen presents winner's trophy at Ascot after King George race

Rhyl Journal2 days ago
Camilla was at the Berkshire racecourse on Saturday afternoon for one of the highlights of the British flat racing calendar.
Dressed in white, she was seen laughing with racing manager John Warren and Sir Francis Brooke, the King's representative at Ascot.
French-trained Calandagan, ridden by Mickael Barzalona, won the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes, beating Kalpana.
The Queen presented the trophy after the race.
Camilla's visit to Ascot comes just weeks after she joined the King at Royal Ascot, where the couple were seen watching the action from the royal box.
During the five-day meeting, the King shared a warm exchange with Sarah, Duchess of York, in the parade ring, while his horse Purple Rainbow was beaten in the Sandringham Stakes.
The late Queen Elizabeth II was a passionate owner and breeder of thoroughbreds and had more than 20 Royal Ascot winners during her 70-year reign.
Charles and Camilla have taken on her stable of horses and enjoyed their first Royal Ascot winner in 2023 when their horse Desert Hero triumphed in the King George V Stakes.

Colbert cancellation: Jay Leno blasts politics in late-night TV

"I like to think that people come to a comedy show to kind of get away from the things, the pressures of life, wherever it might be," Leno said. "And I love political humor, don't get me wrong, but what happens (is) people wind up cozying too much to one side or the other. "Why shoot for just half an audience, why not try to get the whole (audience)?" he posed. Colbert's cancellation: A ratings crisis or a political bribe? We investigate While the interview, published July 22, appears to have taken place prior to the cancellation of CBS' "Late Show" with Stephen Colbert, his comments venture into an ongoing debate about the salience of a late-night lineup amid the Trump administration. Colbert, a frequent critic of President Donald Trump, announced the cancellation of not just his hosting gig, but also the network's late-night show, earlier this month. A successor to David Letterman, Colbert belongs to a class of comedians, including Jon Stewart and John Oliver, who've leaned heavily on political satire to draw laughs from their audience. Notably, though, even less politically-minded comics like Jimmy Fallon, who replaced Leno, and Jimmy Kimmel have opted for sharper critiques of the current president. Leno was off the air before Trump's first successful run for president in 2016, and served as host during the Obama, Clinton and both Bush presidencies from 1992 to 2009 and then again from 2010 to 2014. "I like to bring people into the big picture," Leno added in the interview. "I don't understand why you would alienate one particular group." "I'm not saying you have to throw your support or whatever, but just do what's funny," he said. "I don't think anybody wants to hear a lecture." Colbert's cancellation sent shock waves through the late-night comedy circuit and beyond, even drawing calls from some legislators for an investigation into CBS parent company Paramount's decision to axe the program. Paramount has maintained that the reason for Colbert's cancellation was financial. In a statement sent to USA TODAY previously, executives lauded the comedy host for his tenure and insisted that he was irreplaceable. Citing "a challenging backdrop in late night," the company said the cancellation was "not related in any way to the show's performance, content, or other matters happening at Paramount." Piers Morgan blasts Colbert, politicization of late-night Elsewhere, conservative commentator and British television host Piers Morgan in a post to X called Colbert's seeming left-wing tilt "damning." "Most of America's biggest late-night hosts have become nothing more than hyper-partisan activist hacks for the Democrats - a party that's rarely been more unpopular," Morgan wrote alongside a photo of the New York Post front page announcing the show's cancellation. "No wonder Colbert got canned," he added. Ahead of Colbert's cancellation, Paramount settled a defamation lawsuit with the president, a move viewed by some as a peace offering meant to improve the chances of a merger with Skydance Media before the FCC. The merger has since been approved.

Mum adopts gecko from Spain after finding it in her suitcase

Beth Withington and her partner Ryan Birch, 31, travelled to Costa Blanca in Spain for a week of sun with their three kids on July 13. When they returned home on July 20 from their Jet2 holiday, the 24-year-old, who was simply expecting to tackle a mountain of washing, was shocked to spot the tiny reptile lurking inside Ryan's case. The pharmacist dispenser assumes the 2.5-inch gecko must have been inside their hotel room and covertly crawled into the unlocked case stashed under their dressing table. After sharing their pint-sized stowaway on TikTok, the clip has gone viral with more than 146,000 views (Image: Kennedy News/bethwithington5) The worried couple scooped him up into an aerated plastic tub and rang a vet who confirmed they were able to keep him. Despite previously saying they'd never have pets, the mum-of-three believes the gecko 'chose' their family and have decided to adopt Grylls, named after the British Adventurer Bear Grylls. After sharing their pint-sized stowaway on TikTok, the clip has gone viral with more than 146,000 views. Despite swapping the sunnier climes of Spain for a chillier Manchester, the reptile seems to be thriving thanks to a tank and heat mat gifted by kind-hearted social media users. The couple are due to take him to a vet to ensure he's disease-free and safe for the family to handle. Beth, from Littleborough, Greater Manchester, said: "We were all shocked and didn't know what to say. We couldn't believe it. "It wasn't until Monday afternoon that we opened the suitcase. As I got all the clothes out I noticed a lizard and I was like 'oh my god Ryan there's a lizard there'. I was really shocked. Native wild animals in the UK "The first thing I did was slam the suitcase shut because I was a little bit scared. We opened the suitcase back up and it was just there running around. "We took the suitcase back downstairs and at this point we didn't really know what to do. We put it in a plastic tub and my partner put a few holes in it with a screwdriver. "We ended up ringing a lizard wildlife number. He said 'send me your address and a picture of it and someone will pick him up'. "I put a post on social media saying 'does anyone know what to do with it?' A few people commented saying they'd take it in so we thought 'we might as well keep it then'." After the vet confirmed the family were able to keep the gecko, they decided to adopt him. After being gifted a tank and heat mat from social media users, the pair bought locust hoppers, fruit flies, gecko food, reptile bark and a UV light to keep Grylls comfortable. Beth said: "We're enjoying having it as a new member of the family. It's a sign, he clearly wanted to be part of our family. "He chose us and now we've got a little holiday souvenir. "We've called it Grylls like Bear Grylls and my partner says he's a born survivor. He's a very strong little lizard. "We never considered getting a pet gecko and we said we wouldn't have any pets. Recommended reading: "We have said if Grylls passes away we will have to buy another one. I think he's really cute and the children would be devastated, it's meant to be. "I told my [three-year-old] son we were getting rid of it at first and this morning when he woke up I told him we're keeping it and he's thrilled. "He said 'I love the lizard's new home, it's amazing'. I think he's very happy about it. "Some people [on TikTok] were really offended and acted like I took it and put it in my case like 'you're coming home with me'. But we believe it chose us. "We couldn't put it into the wild, it wouldn't survive and it wouldn't be fair on it." A Jet2 spokesman said: "With our generous 22kg luggage allowance, there is always room for a gecko or two!"

Mikey Moore to Rangers met with word of caution as two transfer uncertainties linger

Gers are in talks over a season-long loan deal for the Tottenham kid and Kris Boyd has some advice on how to handle him Kris Boyd insists Rangers will need to show patience with incoming Tottenham superkid Mikey Moore. ‌ The teenage winger, 17, is poised to sign a season-long loan deal with the Ibrox club in the coming days. ‌ Moore is one of the hottest prospects in British football and made history by becoming Spurs' youngest-ever Premier League debutant. ‌ The rising star - who can play across the front line as a winger or a number 10 - will add strength and depth to Russell Martin's squad. But with the futures of Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane up in the air, Boyd reckons finding a new striker should be the biggest priority. Speaking at the SPFL Season Kick-off Party, he said: 'Moore's a young boy who'll be looking for an opportunity to kick on but there's a little bit of a risk attached to a first loan move. 'He's shown in any opportunities he's had at Tottenham that he has a chance. 'But it can be difficult because a lot of Premier League players in England who go out on loan go to a level where they've got time to adapt, whether it's the Championship or other teams who don't have to play under the same pressure as Rangers and Celtic have. 'It could be a good addition but even if they bring him in, the Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane situation needs to be addressed one way or another. ‌ 'Everybody needs clarity on that pretty quickly. The league starts on Saturday and your two most important players on the pitch are your goalkeeper and your number nine. 'Rangers are no further forward as to who their number nine is - the top goalscorer from last season is still being linked with moves away, he's not played a lot of football, and he's still got a level of fitness to get to. 'For me, there's still no guarantee who's going to be that number nine for Rangers. ‌ 'If Mikey Moore is to come in, it's a big ask for him to come in and be Rangers' number nine and lead the attack. 'But Russell Martin will say he does need reinforcements in the forward area." ‌ Rangers have one foot in the Champions League third qualifying round as they head to Greece with a precious 2-0 first leg lead. But Boyd expects Panathinaikos to come flying out of the traps tomorrow night in the scorching heat of Athens. He said: 'If you go on last week's performance against Panathinaikos, there's still a bit of work to be done for Rangers. ‌ 'With Russell Martin coming in and implementing a new style, it's not going to be fixed overnight and there's no doubt there were going to be some teething problems and that's going to be the case for a number of weeks. 'When you're coming in and you want to implement the style of play that he wants, you're going to make mistakes. 'There's going to be scary moments within the games. ‌ 'If you go back to last week, Rangers would've bitten your hard off for a 2-0 victory before the game. 'The way that the game played out, there was an opportunity to go and get a third and fourth, and the tie could have potentially been over. ‌ 'There's still a lot of hard work to be done before Rangers get through - you've got to take the heat factor into account, and going to Greece is never going to be easy. 'We saw enough last week that there's enough in that Panathinaikos team to cause Rangers problems if they give up the opportunities they did at the start of the first-half last week. 'But that's the way he wants to play and you always run the risk when you're doing that."
