Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express train flagged off by PM Modi: Know ticket fares, timing and more
Prime Minister Narendra Modihas flagged off two Vande Bharat Express trains connecting Katra in Jammu with Srinagar in Kashmir, marking a significant milestone following the completion of the 272-km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link project.
So far, train services were operational only between Banihal and Baramulla in the Kashmir Valley, and between Jammu, Udhampur, and Katra in the Jammu region.
This project will establish all-weather, seamless rail connectivity between Kashmir and the rest of the country, aiming to transform regional mobility and drive socio-economic integration.
The trains are equipped with climate-specific adaptations and provide heating at sub-zero temperatures, along with defrosting elements embedded on the driver's lookout glass. They will offer a swift, comfortable, and reliable travel option for residents, tourists, pilgrims among others. Additionally, there will be the incorporation of heated windscreens and thermally insulated lavatories. A key impact of this train would be that, moving along the Chenab bridge, it will take just about three hours to travel between Katra and Srinagar, reducing the existing travel time by two-three hours.
The Northern Railway announced the commencement of regular services of the Vande Bharat Express trains between Srinagar and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra from June 7.
The services will operate six days a week, enhancing connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the prominent pilgrimage destination. Currently, Two pairs of Vande Bharat Express trains will be introduced. Train Nos. 26404/26403 and 26401/26402 were introduced on the Srinagar-Katra-Srinagar route, with an intermediate halt at Banihal.
Passengers travelling on the new Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express will have to pay ₹715 for a chair car seat and ₹1,320 for executive class.
According to Northern Railway, the two Vande Bharat trains will run a total of four trips daily on this route. Train number 26401 will depart from Katra at 8:10am and reach Srinagar by 11:08am. On the return leg, it will leave Srinagar at 2pm and reach Katra by 4:58pm. This train will not run on Tuesdays.
The second service, train number 26403, will depart from Katra at 2:55pm and arrive in Srinagar at 5:53pm. Its return journey from Srinagar will begin early the next morning, arriving in Katra at 8pm. This train will not operate on Wednesdays.

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 10 (ANI): The Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) has initiated a campaign called 'Rally for Valley' to promote tourism in Jammu and Kashmir after the terror attack in Pahalgam. The association aims to showcase the region as a safe destination and support the local livelihood dependent on tourism. 'The primary purpose of this campaign is to promote J-K as a safe tourist destination and support local livelihood. Around 75 travel company heads from across India are participating in the campaign,' said Sunil Kumar, the president of The Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI). 'We are committed to the revival of tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. As the President of TAAI, I recall our successful convention in Srinagar in 2018, attracting 700 agents from across India and transforming the region. Following the recent Pahalgam incident, we couldn't remain silent. We've launched the 'Rally for Valley' campaign to promote tourism in Jammu and Kashmir again, ' added Sunil Kumar, President of TAAI. The group will visit tourist destinations like Pahalgam, Gulmarg, and Sonmarg to gather feedback from local tourism stakeholders. The association will submit reports to the Tourism Minister, and each state member will share insights with their local governments. Sunil Kumar, President of TAAI, emphasised the potential of Kashmir as a tourist destination, stating that the 2018 convention in Srinagar generated significant interest among travel agents and tourists alike. He added, 'We want to tell the world that Jammu and Kashmir are safe places to visit. We believe this is a big opportunity and responsibility for us. People seek holidays to escape stress, routine, and boredom, and TAAI aims to encourage them to choose Kashmir over other destinations, ' said Sunil Kumar. (ANI)

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 10 (ANI): PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday urged the government to help owners, shopkeepers, taxi owners, and horse owners struggling to repay bank loans after the Pahalgam terror attack has led to a decline in the number of tourists to the state. Local businesses, including hotel owners, shopkeepers, taxi owners, and horse owners, struggle to repay bank loans due to the lack of tourists. 'The recent standstill in tourism has severely impacted local businesses in Pahalgam, with hotel owners, shopkeepers, taxi owners, and horse owners struggling to repay bank loans. To address this, local leaders are urging the government and Shrine Board to support the Amarnath Yatra, which could help revive tourism in the area,' said People's Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti. The 38-day pilgrimage to the holy cave shrine in Jammu and Kashmir has been secured with a massive deployment of 581 Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) companies, jammers, and drones. Earlier on June 8, the Indian Army, with support from an NGO, M3M Foundation, organised the Gujjar-Bakerwal Mela at Aishmuqam in South Kashmir's Anantnag district, aimed at supporting the nomadic community ahead of the annual Amarnath Yatra. Earlier, the Deputy Commissioner of Anantnag, AF Hamid, inspected the Nunwan and Chandanwari base camps on Thursday to review the progress of ongoing developmental works and preparations for the upcoming Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2025. According to an official press release, the DC reviewed critical infrastructure projects executed by various departments, including Jal Shakti, Public Health Engineering (PHE), Roads and Buildings (R&B), and other allied agencies. He also inspected ongoing track clearance operations along the yatra route. Special focus was placed on the readiness of essential facilities such as drinking water, sanitation, power supply, accommodation, and health care services. The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, said the tourism sector has been badly affected and the administration is now focusing on ensuring a safe and incident-free Amarnath Yatra. Railway passenger traffic rises 6% in FY25, crosses 7 billion mark
Passenger volume on the Indian Railways increased by 6 per cent in 2024-25 (FY25), riding on a 5 per cent rise in the reserved ticket category and 6.2 per cent growth in unreserved passenger volume. The Railways has been seeing a resurgence in passenger travel since its halt due to the Covid lockdown. For the first time in five years, the total passenger count crossed 7 billion. However, it is still below pre-Covid volumes. Historical data (since 2011) show that the Railways was carrying over 8 billion passengers for a decade before the lockdown, with peak volume in FY13 (8.49 billion passengers). Passengers travelling in sleeper class have also seen a reduction over the past two years. With the introduction of premium trains such as the Vande Bharat, railway revenue from chair car services has risen nearly four times in four years to ₹₹4,400 crore. According to officials, long-distance sleeper Vande Bharats, once introduced, will spur even higher revenue generation in the long-distance segments.
