PM Shehbaz visits flood-hit areas of Gilgit-Baltistan
He stressed that although Pakistan's role in climate change is minimal, the country continues to suffer disproportionately from global warming. He also chaired a meeting to review the damages, relief operations, and rehabilitation from the recent floods.
During his one-day visit, the PM was briefed by Gilgit-Baltistan Governor Syed Mehdi Shah and Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan on the aftermath of the devastation caused by the recent rains and floods, which impacted both tourists and locals. Shehbaz Sharif expressed regret over the loss of lives and damage to property, calling it a 'national tragedy.'

'Despite our negligible contribution to environmental degradation, Pakistan is among the countries most affected by global warming,' the PM said. He also said the entire nation, including himself, was saddened by the losses across the country, especially in GB.
'The destruction caused by global warming, whether it is in Diamer, Ganche or other areas. Pakistan is among the top 10 countries in the world facing this destruction and losses as a result of global warming.'
Urgent climate strategy and funding demanded
Shehbaz directed the climate change minister to immediately prepare a national strategy to combat climate impacts and secure international funds for mitigation and adaptation. He also ordered the establishment of modern infrastructure for weather forecasting, relief preparations, and dealing with natural disasters.
'I've asked the Climate Change Ministry to act swiftly. We need to bring in funds and take serious steps to adapt,' he said.
Shehbaz Sharif lauded the efforts of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the Ministry of Communications and other institutions for the prompt restoration of highways and the safe transfer of stranded people.
The meeting was briefed that the July 21 cloudburst in Gilgit-Baltistan caused damage to tourists and the local population. Over 600 people were rescued and the affected highways were reopened shortly after. Five tent settlements were set up for the rescue operation, while 10 helicopters and two C-130 aircraft were used to transport people to safer places, the meeting was told.
The prime minister instructed authorities to: Complete damage surveys of highways and infrastructure; Restore communication links in affected regions on priority; Ensure coordination between NDMA and provincial institutions during emergencies; Accelerate rehabilitation for monsoon-affected communities.
Reaffirming his commitment to disaster resilience, Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the importance of long-term planning and readiness in the face of climate-induced natural disasters, especially in vulnerable regions like Gilgit-Baltistan.
Federal ministers Abdul Aleem Khan, Attaullah Tarar, Amir Muqam, and Mosaddeq Malik were also present during the high-level briefing and review session.

NDMA flags looming flood threat

The alert follows the combined influence of penetrating monsoon currents and a westerly trough over northern Pakistan, which is expected to result in scattered heavy rainfall during this period. Increased inflows are anticipated in all major rivers, especially Indus, Chenab, and Ravi, with nullahs of Ravi and Chenab likely to reach up to medium flood levels. Tarbela, Guddu, and Sukkur Barrages are presently at low flood stage, but continued rain may push Chashma and Taunsa towards low flood levels as well. River Chenab at Marala is expected to reach low flood, while River Jhelum upstream of Mangla Dam, along with its tributaries, may attain medium flows. River Kabul at Nowshera, and River Swat and Panjkora with their associated streams and nullahs are also likely to swell owing to persistent rainfall in their catchment areas. In Gilgit-Baltistan, stream networks in districts Hunza, Shigar, and Ghanche may see significant rise in water levels with potential for localized flash floods in tributaries. Current storage levels at major reservoirs show Tarbela at 94% and Mangla at 61%, with further inflow expected. NDMA urges residents living near rivers, streams, and nullahs to stay vigilant for sudden rises in water levels, especially at night and during periods of intense rainfall. The public is advised to stay updated through official flood warnings via television, radio, mobile alerts and Pak NDMA Disaster Alert app.

PM pushes agri-loan reforms for farmers
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday ordered immediate reforms to simplify and expand access to low-cost agricultural loans for small and medium-scale farmers, terming it vital for boosting productivity and ensuring economic dignity for the rural population. While chairing a high-level review meeting in the federal capital, the premeir emphasised that small farmers must be treated with respect and given due facilitation, particularly when it comes to acquiring low-interest loans for their agricultural needs, a statement from the PM's Office said. "Small-scale farmers face immense challenges in securing low-cost loans," the premier noted, adding that "providing them with easier access to affordable credit is among the government's top priorities," he said. The prime minister instructed the concerned authorities to accelerate reforms within the Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL), and to encourage private banks to step forward in offering concessional loans to the agricultural sector on easier terms. He announced that he would chair review meetings every three weeks to monitor the implementation of loan facilitation initiatives and reforms at ZTBL. The premier reiterated his government's commitment to agricultural development and the empowerment of small farmers through institutional support, financial inclusion, and practical reforms. Officials briefed the prime minister on the ongoing reform efforts at ZTBL, the bank's performance, and proposed strategies to improve agricultural lending. The meeting also reviewed the role of private banks in supporting the agri-sector through credit disbursement. SMEs The prime minister underscored the significance of SMEs as the engine of inclusive growth, innovation, and employment and termed them as enablers of national strength saying, "empowering them means empowering Pakistan". He chaired a high-level meeting of the Steering Committee of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA), underlining the government's firm commitment to promote small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as a backbone of national economic growth, a Prime Minister's Office news release said. Addressing the participants of the meeting, the premier stressed that small and medium-sized businesses play a pivotal role in the development and prosperity of the country. "The growth of SMEs is among the top priorities of the government, and we are implementing reforms and initiatives on a fast-track basis to support this critical sector," he said. The committee was briefed on recent reforms within SMEDA and key initiatives aimed at strengthening the SME ecosystem. It was revealed that, on the Prime Minister's special directive, businesses with an annual turnover of up to Rs30 million have now been classified as micro enterprises and brought under SMEDA's purview.
