Lowveld baker takes on The Taste Master SA
Chevonne Fourie, a passionate upcoming baker is competing in the sixth season of The Taste Master SA cooking competition. The show is already airing on SABC 2 and is presented and judged by the renowned chef, Zola Nene. Each episode has a new baking or cooking challenge, which gets judged by a rotating panel. These include Nene's mother, Chef Anwar Abdullatief, as well as Daniel Blignaut, Nathan Clarke, Justin Barker and other guest judges. ALSO READ: Mbombela boy bakes banana bread for trip to the seaside With two challenge wins to her name, Fourie has already proved herself a force to be reckoned with. She won the judges over with a mouth-watering orange and poppy seed cake in the Mother's Day challenge, and followed it up with a winning mushroom fagottini – an Italian-inspired stuffed pasta dish. All her recipes can be found on The Taste Master SA's website for viewers and foodies to try out. Fourie grew up in the Lowveld and began cooking and baking with her grandmother at just five years old in their family-owned hotel, the Böhm Zeederberg Country House in Hazyview. 'I remember preparing snacks for the guests with my grandmother in the kitchen and enjoying the new things I learnt from her,' Fourie shared. She also learnt to cook in her mother's restaurant, the Bohemian Groove Cafe, situated in her hometown, Kaapsehoop. She was a learner of Hoërskool Nelspruit and competed in a few cooking competitions. In Grade 11 she won her first cooking competition, 'Skole Kook' in Mpumalanga with her team in 2017. She has her own patisserie called Botter is Liefde, where she makes custom cakes and pastries. Through The Taste Master SA competition, she hopes to improve her cooking skills and expand her network in the culinary industry. 'Of course winning would be the icing on the cake, but I'm here for the experience,' Fourie admitted. Viewers can watch new episodes every Tuesday at 19:30 on SABC 2. Missed an episode? Fathers and traders at our Father's Day CraftFest have their own distinctive style, and plenty of gifts for dad. Jeff Meier from Otter Cat Clothing, Afzal Saib from Wild Rhino SA and Jason Mqokozo from Seamartist Apparel get into the mood for an event that celebrates craft in all its forms, craft food and drink, great music and plenty of crafty buys. It's a fun event for the whole family. Spoil dad for Father's Day tomorrow at CraftFest, a festival that celebrates all things Craft. Held with the Shongweni Farmers and Craft Market at their site in Shongweni it is a fun day out in the country for the whole family. Plus there are plenty of treats for dad. Enjoy a taste sensation with craft beer, spirits and food along with many artisanal crafters showcasing their skills and products. Live local bands feature all day long on Main Stage to ensure your feet don't stop moving. Craft beers include KZN's finest with the Standeaven Brewery, That Brewery known for its Blonde, Red, APA Cows, EL Juicy. Lions Brewery will tempt with beers like German Fest Lager, Bohemian Pilsner, American Pale Ale, Vanilla Porter, Best English Bitter and even a Shandy. Terry Bright Ideas will feature Guinness. Distillers feature The Gin Co along with its range of premixed GnTs and the Lions Brewery Gin/Vodka. Apperol and Campari cocktails and twists will feature along with Salito's Bar in the VIP section. The Roll Bar has a range of cocktails ready to roll, Pretty Drinks are known for their vibrant and colourful cocktail creations and there's an exciting new activation called Nawty Water. Wines include Vrede en Lust and Doos. There are food options to suit all tastes from Italian gelato to good old boerie rolls. Look out for gourmet burgers and hot dogs from Filthy Mustache, vegan falafel wraps from Valeo, and deli style snack platter with olives, cheeses and cured meats from Beckz Smoked Meats. There's Chinese food, and Thai pot stickers from Yomani, and the creative offerings of Food Revolution and Fish Revolution. Peck-eish offers gourmet snacks and meals while the Maddison Bakery a range of croissants, pizzas and more. For dessert look no further than the Brownie Bar with offerings that include peppermint crisp and creme brulee, or try the caramelised cashews from Bavarian Nut Works. There are two artisanal coffee stands and another offering bubble teas. Top local musicians include Matt Clement, Jasper Dan, the Phillip Taylor Band and the Golden Super Hawks. Kids can have a fun day in the Kid's Zone, which is free. There's the Shongweni Snake Park, Groovyland, paintball, quad bikes, a zipline, bubble house, bungee jump, face painting and the Shongweni Express. Proceeds from CraftFest include the donation of 600 meals to Scars are a Blessing Foundation - an organization in Umlazi that feeds 60 children and 40 adults. "Supporting our festival will not only be feeding a hungry Dad on Father's Day but also helping hungry families," says organiser Christine Standeaven of the market. Tickets from CraftFest are available from Quicket. Adults R100, Children R50. This year to keep costs down we have reduced ticket prices, but they don't include our definitive CraftFest Bubble glass. These can be bought at the festival.

Playing Dad: How film speaks to fathers' desires and struggles of fatherhood
The short film 'Playing Dad' was officially released on Heartlines' YouTube channel on Friday, just in time for Father's Day. The newly released film Playing Dad was inspired by the needs identified by the Fathers Matter project research and community engagement, says project coordinator Lereko Mfono. 'Many men want to be involved in the lives of their children but don't always know how and worry they might lose respect by leaning into constructive playtime,' Mfono said. ALSO READ: Father's Day: A guide to buying dad a gift that has meaning Obstacles for fathers Father Matters, an initiative of Heartlines, the Centre for Values Promotion, is a campaign that harnesses the power of storytelling to support the positive and active role of fathers and men in the lives of children. The report by Fathers Matter highlighted an essential barrier to dads' engagement with their children – the lack of parenting skills. The State of South Africa's Fathers 2024 report and Heartlines' Fathers Matter research found that more than 60% of children are growing up without their biological father in the home. However, many are raised by father figures, including uncles, grandfathers, older brothers, or male role models in the community. The research found that four common factors driving father absence were economic pressure, harmful cultural norms, rigid gender roles and the lack of support and parenting knowledge. 'Due to many factors, including societal perceptions of the role of fatherhood, there is a lack of knowledge of how to be a positive, engaging, practical father,' Mfono said. It is a story about a father navigating the complexities of fatherhood. In the short film, leading actor Vincent Mahlape plays the character of Mpendulo, a carpenter who suddenly finds himself in charge of his young son, Ndumiso. As Mpendulo fumbles his way through snack times and storybooks, he discovers that play isn't just for kids, it's the glue that binds fathers and sons. In 2006, Heartlines launched a campaign called '8 weeks, eight values-one national conversation' through eight television dramas broadcast on SABC. Mahlape says, like many South Africans, he grew up watching those impactful stories. 'I grew up watching Heartlines films – we all did,' he says. 'I particularly remember Hopeville.' Playing Dad was Mahlape's first time playing opposite a child on set and he says it's been a highlight for him. He is a father to a nine-year-old son and shares that he learnt a lot from the character of Mpendulo and about what fathering means through the eyes of a child. 'It's not about just providing for your child's needs. A simple body adjustment – like going down to a child's level – makes so much of a difference in how they receive your message when you speak to them,' he says 'Being a father is more than having a baby. The little stuff means a lot more to a child than you ever think. Like playing – it looks small, but it means a lot. It helps them open up to you, and it teaches you about yourself.'
