Alcohol trial at women's matches to be expanded to up to 14 clubs next season

Glasgow Times24-07-2025
Four clubs – Birmingham, Bristol City, Newcastle and Southampton – took part in a similar trial in the second half of last season and it has now been extended to include up to a further 10 clubs.
The sale of alcohol in sight of the pitch is illegal in men's football, but the legislation does not cover the women's game.
The new clubs joining the trial are Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, London City Lionesses, Manchester City and Manchester United from the Women's Super League, plus Crystal Palace, Sheffield United and Sunderland in the second-tier Women's Super League 2.

Chelsea, London City Lionesses and Newcastle's involvement is still subject to approval from their local safety advisory groups.
The aim of expanding the trial is to test at larger scale across a full season, covering a broader range of crowd and stadium sizes.
Some of the country's biggest football stadia, including Old Trafford, the Emirates Stadium, the Etihad Stadium, Goodison Park and Stamford Bridge, could potentially be involved.
Many of the venues are set to offer the opportunity for tickets to be purchased in designated alcohol-free areas, WSL Football said.
Holly Murdoch, the chief operating officer of WSL Football, said: 'Expanding this trial for the new campaign, encompassing our Barclays WSL teams and additional Barclays WSL2 clubs too, is part of our strategy to offer a best-in-class experience for our fans attending matches.

'Exploring giving supporters the choice to drink alcohol in the stands was something we were excited to trial and, following such positive feedback from the proof-of-concept version, we're looking forward to opening it up to more venues and equally hearing from those at the heart of it – our clubs and supporters.'
Feedback from the four-club trial in the second half of last season was positive. Two-thirds surveyed supported the idea of the trial continuing, with 48 per cent strongly supporting its continuation.
There were no safety incidents reported and 84 per cent of fans rated their sense of safety at nine or 10 out of 10.

Former Chelsea and Arsenal cult hero announces shock move to Cypriot champions after leaving Brazilian side

The champions of Cyprus have announced the surprise signing of a Premier League cult hero. The 38-year-old is best remembered for his time at Chelsea but also went on to spend two seasons with their London rivals Arsenal. David Luiz spent nine seasons in the Premier League in total before leaving for his native Brazil in 2021. He spent the second half of last season with Fortaleza but became a free agent on August 1, leaving the club by mutual consent. And his next move has been confirmed just days later with Pafos confirming that he has joined them on a two-year deal. A club statement read: 'Pafos FC is proud to announce the signing of Brazilian football icon David Luiz, who joins the club on a contract until 2027. This landmark transfer marks the most historic moment in Cypriot football — the arrival of a global superstar whose name has echoed in the world's greatest stadiums. 'From the sacred pitches of Brazil to the brightest stages of Europe, David Luiz's career is a journey of passion, character, and excellence. 'David Luiz Moreira Marinho is a true titan of modern football. For over 15 years, he has competed at the pinnacle of the sport, earning admiration around the globe for his commanding presence, technical brilliance, and unmistakable charisma. Throughout his illustrious career, he has left a lasting legacy at every club he has represented. 'And now, he brings his unmatched experience, charisma, and warrior spirit to the land of myths, to write a new chapter with Pafos FC. Luiz re-joined boyhood club Flamengo in 2021 after his contract at Arsenal expired - and he went on to enjoy success in South America. He made 132 matches for the side in his second spell and helped them win the Copa Libertadores, the Copa do Brasil twice and the Campeonato Carioca. At club level, Luiz has a CV to envy with a host of trophy wins to boast - including the Champions League, the Europa League, the Premier League title and the FA Cup - plus a clean sweep of silverware in France. He made his name with Chelsea - signing from Benfica in 2010 - and going on to make 143 appearances, before joining PSG for two seasons.

Chelsea signed Netherlands defender Jorrel Hato, while Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is unsure what the future holds for wantaway striker Alexander Isak. Elsewhere, Scottish Premiership champions Celtic scraped past St Mirren. James Maddison sustained a serious-looking knee injury as Tottenham's pre-season tour of Asia concluded with a 1-1 draw against Newcastle in Seoul. The England international, who missed the closing stages of last season with a knee problem, was carried off on a stretcher after going down unchallenged late in the game. Manager Thomas Frank said the issue appeared to be a 'bad injury' before Spurs later announced the signing of Portugal midfielder Joao Palhinha on loan from Bayern Munich. Sunday's friendly was otherwise notable for the emotional reception departing South Korea forward Son Heung-min received from fans in his home city. Looking good. 😎🇳🇱 — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) August 3, 2025 Chelsea completed the signing of Netherlands defender Jorrel Hato from Ajax in a deal worth a reported £37million. The 19-year-old, who has been capped six times by his country, signed a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge. He became the Blues' eighth signing of the summer transfer window. Hato, who can operate in central defence or at left-back, said: 'I thought a lot about my future and wanted to take the next step in my career. Chelsea is the best place for me to do that.' Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is hoping to see striker Alexander Isak back in training in the coming days. Isak, who has been the subject of interest from Liverpool, missed the Magpies' pre-season tour of Asia amid speculation over his future. Newcastle are returning home after their trip concluded against Spurs on and Howe hopes the Sweden international will report back as normal. Howe told The Chronicle after the game: 'Of course I'd like him to but whether or not he will, I don't know at this moment in time. Other people have been dealing with that situation back at home.' William Hill Premiership champions Celtic left it late before beginning their title defence with a 1-0 victory over St Mirren at Parkhead. Luke McCowan's deflected strike three minutes from time finally broke the visitors' resistance. The substitute collected Daizen Maeda's square pass on the edge of a crowded penalty box and fired a shot which appeared to spin off Mark O'Hara's leg and nestle into the bottom corner of the net. Celtic had earlier hit the frame of the goal through Benjamin Nygren, Reo Hatate and Adam Idah, while Callum McGregor had a goal disallowed following VAR intervention. Hearts host Aberdeen at Tynecastle in the final match of the opening round of fixtures of the new Scottish Premiership season.
