Men I Trust Adds Live Grit to Gorgeous, Shimmering Dreampop Songs at Brooklyn Tour Launch: Concert Review

Yahoo20-07-2025
Canadian indie outfit Men I Trust seems beamed down from the heavens to be a headphones band. Lead singer and guitarist Emmanuelle Proulx's gentle vocals float along over a textured dreampop sound built alongside guitarist Jessy Caron and keyboardist Dragos Chiriac. The lyrics about romance and longing fit both modes the band operates in: The airy studio versions of their material, and the group's popular 'Forever Live Sessions' releases, which find the musicians huddled together and playing live.
How is the group's sound translated to a live-with-audience show? Men I Trust launched the Equus North American Tour at Brooklyn's Lena Horne Bandshell on Friday night, and it's clear the band has perfected a third branch of their sound: a dynamic, road-ready live act.
2025 has been a prolific year for the group, as it included the release of its fifth and sixth studio albums, 'Equus Asinus' in March and 'Equus Caballus' in May. While the former was a slight stylistic diversion, relying more on acoustic sounds and the tempos notched down, the latter continued the unhurried but bouncy rhythm section on many of their best-known compositions.
Supplemented by longtime touring bandmates Eric Maillet on drums and mononymic bassist Alexis, Men I Trust opened a career-spanning set with the bright, synth-heavy new song 'To Ease You.' One thing that separates the band from dreampop peers is the surprisingly swinging rhythm section, in which a structured bassline dances around a steady drumbeat. This heartbeat allows for propulsion even when the vibe is demure, and the opening chug of 'To Ease You' set the tone that even with hushed melodies, the set would keep moving.
Perhaps the group's biggest live strength is their steadfast commitment to play in the pocket, with parts that best serve the song. Besides a guitar solo or two, the arrangements are locked in, eschewing showboating to blend seamlessly with each other. Their sound flowed on tracks like fan favorite 'Tailwhip,' with Maillet's driving but tasteful drum line creating structure for Alexis' muted, funk-influenced bass, with Chiriac's siren-inspired synth interplaying with the two guitarists, laying down pedal-distorted riffs under Proulx's fragile, gorgeous vocal line. It's a tricky balance, but the band (and the hard-working sound experts at the venue) let every well-balanced note shine through.
Hearing the group's work recontextualized live also allows some of their influences to shine through even brighter. The guitars of 'Where I Sit' recall quirky '80s bands like Oingo Boingo, where 'Carried Away' is made more muscular live and sounds like a deconstruction of a forgotten grunge anthem. 'Serenade of Water' finds the group approaching trip hop, with a searching guitar line run through an expressive pedal, while 'Seven' feels like it could be a b-side to Eagles' 'The Long Run,' with a lick and rolling rhythm straight out of 1979. Despite all of these dips into the rock music songbook, all of the jams are unmistakably Men I Trust, synthesizing these ideas in tasteful ways to nudge their sound, not break it.
Ending their encore by pogoing through the upbeat tracks 'Worn Down' and 'Billie Toppy,' the dancing crowd showed the power of a band turning up their amps and going large. While many Men I Trust songs began in the privacy of hushed bedrooms or small studios, the ace songwriting and Proulx's soulful vocals can touch thousands in a crowd.

Christina Applegate explains 'I don't enjoy living' comments after worried fans react

This story discusses suicide. If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, please contact the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 or 1-800-273-TALK (8255). Christina Applegate is clarifying recent comments that she made about struggling with her mental health amid her battle with multiple sclerosis (MS). During the June 4 episode of her "MeSsy" podcast, which she co-hosts with Jamie-Lynn Sigler, the 52-year-old "Dead to Me" actress shared that she was "in a depression." "Like a real, f--- it all depression where it's kind of scaring me a little bit because it feels really fatalistic. I'm trapped in this darkness right now that I haven't felt like... I don't even know how long, probably 20 something years," said Applegate, who first revealed her diagnosis with the chronic disease in 2021. "This is being really honest... I don't enjoy living. I don't enjoy it. I don't enjoy things anymore," she added. In the latest episode of the "MeSsy" podcast, Applegate reassured fans who were concerned about her well-being and said she was "very disturbed" by the "clickbait" about her remarks. CHRISTINA APPLEGATE ADDRESSES FUTURE AS AN ACTRESS AMID MS DIAGNOSIS "I'm good. Does that take a little bit of the pressure off of all of you? I'm good," Applegate said. "Let's address it," said Sigler, who is also battling MS. "We are going to address it," Applegate said. "I was talking about some dark stuff I was thinking and feeling." "This is our safe place to get those things out," she continued. "Because I feel that when we hold things in, we give them power. I also think that there's so much shame that a lot of people feel when they're going through mental health issues, and they call them issues." "I hate that," the actress added. "It's not mental issues. It's not a problem. It's a moment. It's a thought. It's a feeling. And when people hold those in because they're so afraid to say how they truly feel, we give it immense power." The "Married… with Children" alum said she believes "society has told us that we're supposed to be just f------ fine." "And I am not into that," Applegate said. "I am not a proponent of that kind of thing. I think that it's incredibly healing and important to be able to express the thoughts, whether that makes someone uncomfortable or not, to be able to say it." LIKE WHAT YOU'RE READING? However, Applegate expressed her fear that the outpouring of concern might make others more reluctant to express their feelings. "By making such a big deal about it you're making other people think, 'Oh, s---, I can't talk about this.' And that is not OK with me," she said. "It's important to be able to say these things. And, no, I'm not sitting here on suicide watch, OK? I am not. Nor have I ever been." "I dare anyone to be diagnosed with MS or any kind of chronic illness that has taken who you were prior to that moment and go, 'This is great,'" she continued. "You know? No, you have moments of feeling, 'This is tiring and I don't wanna do this.' But you do it, and by having friends like you and my beautiful friends that I have saying this s--- out loud, it releases the pressure in the balloon." Applegate revealed her diagnosis on X, formerly Twitter, in 2021. CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT NEWSLETTER "Hi friends. A few months ago I was diagnosed with MS," she wrote. "It's been a strange journey. But I have been so supported by people that I know who also have this condition," Applegate continued. "It's been a tough road. But as we all know, the road keeps going. Unless some a--hole blocks it." In a separate post, she added, "As one of my friends that has MS said, 'We wake up and take the indicated action.' And that's what I do." In her first lengthy in-person interview since she found out about the illness, Applegate opened up about the "hell" she has been living in. "I live kind of in hell," she said during a "Good Morning America" interview in March. "I'm not out a lot, so this is a little difficult, just for my system. But of course, the support is wonderful, and I'm really grateful." CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP Fox News Digital's Lauryn Overhultz contributed to this report.

'Duck Dynasty' star Willie Robertson shares late father Phil Robertson's final message

"Duck Dynasty" star Willie Robertson revealed the final message that his late father shared with their family before his death. In May, Phil Robertson, famous for founding the Duck Commander hunting company that became the focus of his A&E show, died at the age of 79. The "Duck Dynasty" family patriarch had previously battled multiple health conditions, including Alzheimer's disease. "Phil had been struggling with Alzheimer's for a while," Willie, 53, said. "It was on our mind for sure, his condition. It's part of life." He continued, "Phil had such a strong faith. He told us before, 'Do not cry at my funeral. I know where I'm going.'" 'DUCK DYNASTY' STAR PHIL ROBERTSON FORCES HIMSELF TO EAT AS HE BATTLES ALZHEIMER'S, PLANS TO 'KEEP THE FAITH' "What a life he lived," Willie added. "We heard that from thousands of people, the people he impacted. Phil would have wanted us to do exactly what we're doing. Whatever is a reflection of that faith, and our show is a reflection of our faith." "Not overtly. We're not trying to preach to people or convert people, but I think you can see the fruit in the faith of our show and our family and how it sticks together through good times and bad. That's why we are on this earth. As we move on, I think it's a reminder to all of us the time will come. I hope I have a funeral like that where people feel that way about me as well." Phil, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in December, passed away during the same week that his family's new show "Duck Dynasty: The Revival" premiered. Though Phil did not participate in "Duck Dynasty: The Revival" due to his health issues, the series' first episode included a tribute to him. The video begins with footage of Willie reading an introduction for the show off his laptop to Phil, who was seen sitting in an armchair. "So ladies and gentlemen, start your engines. Only one will earn the bandana, so let the games begin. What do you think, Phil?" Willie asked. Phil replied by giving his son a big thumb's up. The scene faded to black as a photo of Phil appeared alongside the in-memoriam tribute. "Ah, that was awesome!" Willie was heard saying in response to his father's gesture in the background of the tribute. Willie's wife Korie, who joined him for the interview, told TV Insider that the timing of Phil's death was "a little surreal." "It was really special to our family that we had that one little clip," she said. "When filming this time around, he was already in the throes of Alzheimer's, so he wasn't able to be part of the show. We did film that one little thing where he gave Willie the thumbs up." LIKE WHAT YOU'RE READING? CLICK HERE FOR MORE ENTERTAINMENT NEWS "It was really special because, for our family, it felt like, 'OK, this is his opportunity to pass on the torch to us,'" she continued. "It's funny to see the comments [from fans] who are like, 'The next generation are yuppies. They aren't passing things on.' "But we are passing on Phil's legacy because his legacy was first about faith," she said. "His whole motto was faith, family, ducks, in that order. His first was faith. All our kids are living that out in really beautiful ways and family." "That's what this show is about," Korie added. "It's about family, inner-generational family living life together and what that might look like. And then ducks. We're still running Duck Commander, the business he started from the duck call he invented years and years ago. That has been really special to carry that legacy on now after his passing." WATCH DUCK FAMILY TREASURE ONLINE | STREAM FOX NATION Phil founded Duck Commander in 1972. The "Duck Dynasty" television show premiered 40 years later, in 2012, before it ended in 2017. During a recent interview with Fox News Digital, Willie and Korie explained how they were coping after losing Phil and how they were touched by the outpouring of support that they received from fans. "I think it's a combination of some sadness, just we miss him, but also joy and happiness from what he believed and where he was going and all the things he was able to accomplish in his life," Willie said. "And so many people that he helped and we were reminded of that at his passing. And just so many people just flooded us with messages of how he had helped change their life, either directly or indirectly through the show or through the podcast or books he has written." CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT NEWSLETTER While Willie shared that it was "tragic" watching his father suffer during his battle with Alzheimer's, he said it helped prepare the family for his passing. "You're ready," he said. "We knew, he's ready to move on and so yeah, it's kind of mixed. But there was really more joy." "Phil pre-warned us," he added. "We told a lot of funny stories and just brought back all those fun memories," Korie chimed in. "It's a little bit the Robertson way. Even in the hard things, we laugh a lot through it." Korie said they hoped future generations would be inspired by Phil's dedication to his faith and how it transformed his life. "Just in passing down that legacy — one of the things that we've just been reminded of over and over again is just this man who lived down on the river, didn't own a cell phone or a computer — what God did with his life. Because he was just truly passionately sold out for Jesus," she said. Korie continued, "And so I think for all of us, it's brought even more of a boldness to our faith to say like, 'Hey, we follow Jesus, and that's who we are.' And if you want to know more about it, come talk to us because it's brought a full life." CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP "And a changed life," Willie added. "There would never have been a 'Duck Dynasty' show. There wouldn't have been company had his life not changed. This family would not have stayed together." Phil's wife Kay, 77, has previously spoken out about how the couple faced marital struggles in the early years of their union due to Phil's alcoholism and infidelity before he committed to his faith. The pair, who married in 1966, had four sons including Willie, Alan, 59, Jase, 55 and Jep, 47, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. "It's all responsible to his faith and his life change, of he and mom together to keep this family together," he said. "And now we're seeing so much fruit of that."

Your Weekly Work Horoscope for The Week of July 28, 2025

Your Weekly Work Horoscope for The Week of July 28, 2025. Discover your Weekly Work Horoscope for each zodiac sign here. Aries There are a lot of details you have to take care of on Monday, and you're not going to have as much time as you'd like. Still, don't rush. Get everything done right the first time and you'll be better off in the long run. Tuesday and Wednesday, your best strategy is, oddly enough, to spend all your time assisting someone else. It's important to solidify your key relationships at work this week, especially so that, come Thursday and Friday (they're not going to be easy days) you have a few people you can talk to. On Sunday, try to play as hard as you've been working. Taurus The beginning of the week has you thinking about basically everything else in the world except work. A blossoming romance has got your heart going a million beats per second, and you have a hankering to spend some of the cash in your pocket. Let this positive energy feed into your work. Even the routine stuff will seem less dull, mostly because you're looking at everything in a new way. There's a chance that, at the end of the week, someone's going to register some amount of jealousy at the way you seem to get whatever you want. Be as sensitive and modest as possible. Gemini You have a stack of invoices on your desk that need to be taken care of, but all you want to do is make them into paper airplanes and sail them out the window. This probably isn't the best idea. If you deal with the Monday drudgery on Monday then you can have fun on Tuesday and Wednesday (both days will be full of action, romance and energy). Thursday sees you slowing down a bit again, just to regain your footing with current projects, and on Friday you'll dig deep to solve a burning question about the business. Over the weekend, share what you've learned with a trusted ally. Cancer Your communications are becoming more and more effective. A quick email can solve almost anything. Keep alert to the small things on Monday. Don't let anything escape you. Tuesday and Wednesday you'll wish you could transfer your effectiveness at work to the home realm. Things will be rocky with a neighbor or roommate, and the solution won't be immediately apparent. Expect the end of the workweek to be a little emotionally chaotic. As well as confusing. Don't get involved with anything you're unsure of. And then this weekend, do something to relax. Leo You're not the kind of person who normally finds ways to throw company money out the window, but at the beginning of this week you'll be even more thrifty than usual. Being financial conservative is usually a smart thing to be, and come Tuesday or Wednesday someone will compliment you on the decisions you've made lately. Which, in turn, might lead you to feel a bit more relaxed about everything. The end of the week sees you continuing to look at issues closely. You have a good business sense these days because you can always tell what's going on below the surface. That's a skill. Prepare yourself to take on each month with your personalized Monthly Horoscope! Virgo The week begins on a great note. Everything is happening the way it should be and your desk is tidy. You are at the top of your game when you're organized. Put that momentum into starting a new project. The next couple of days see you splashing out in unusual ways, taking more risks than you usually do and connecting with coworkers on an unusually deep level. It's a pleasure to be in your shoes. And to get to have the kinds of conversations you're going to have on Thursday and Friday. The professional world is clearly yours for the taking. You'll spend the weekend thinking about work too. Libra A nagging voice in your head distracts you from what you really need to focus on at the beginning of the week. Try not to become overwhelmed by the amount of responsibility on your plate these days. Everyone else is feeling the same stresses. And besides, by Wednesday, those stresses are going to evaporate for you. You will feel more energized and balanced than you have in a while. Toward the end of the workweek, your eyes are on the bottom line. You're constantly thinking of ways to improve revenue. You'll be dreaming of moneymaking schemes all weekend. Scorpio The week begins quietly. A friend is going to call you with a secret and the thrill of having inside information will put you at ease. You thrive on knowledge. And you're in a knowledge-gathering mode these days. You're in less of a decision-making mode, but a decision will have to be made (by you) in the middle of the week. Rely on someone whose expertise you admire to help you. And then be patient. Thursday and Friday you'll come across to everyone else as powerful and confident, which are always good things to project. The weekend has you thinking big. Sagittarius Someone in an authority position is cramping your style on Monday. The best way to deal with it isn't to be up front. Keep your head down and get as much done in spite of their intrusions. You can communicate your feelings on Tuesday and Wednesday, when the energy is better for candid conversation. (Expect Tuesday and Wednesday to be great days all around.) Thursday and Friday, all you can think about is the big picture, the long term, and necessarily you might find yourself moving slower than usual. Break out of the daydreaming spell by spending time with great friends this weekend. Capricorn The more research you do, the more you learn. And the more facts you have, the better decisions you'll make. Tuesday and Wednesday, put your newfound knowledge into practice. As much energy as you invest into your work in the middle of the week, things may still be slow going. That's okay. It can take a while for an engine to warm up. Even by Thursday, things will be looking good. On Friday, friendships and prestige figure strongly. When you wake up Sunday morning, your work goals may seem impossible, but they're not impossible at all. Aquarius You are in the middle of striking a business deal on Monday. Make sure that you're comfortable with the terms. And make sure you have a good handle on the motives of the person sitting on the other side of the table. They may have a more complicated agenda than you realize. Then, toward the middle of the week, try to divorce yourself from stressful business worries by connecting with coworkers on a personal level. Maybe grab a bite to eat with someone after work. As the week winds down, you're going to wind down as well. Friday and the weekend are going to be smooth sailing. Pisces What to do about work at the beginning of the week? Well, no action is worse than simply doing nothing at all. So make a decision. You can hammer out the details (or, if you need to, change course) later. On Tuesday or Wednesday, you're in an out-with-the-old-and-in-with-the-new head space. If a problem arises in a partnership, you may question whether the partnership is worth it. (And if it's not, why stick with it?) Toward the end of the week, as you put your foot down about a number of issues, everyone else's respect for you is only going to grow. Find your cosmic purpose.
