Van Dijk explains personal request to Hansen to present Premier League trophy
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk had asked for Alan Hansen, who was taken seriously ill last year, to present him with the Premier League trophy at Anfield on Sunday
Virgil van Dijk was adamant that the Premier League trophy had to be handed from one great Liverpool captain to another.
It was Van Dijk's idea for Alan Hansen, the last Liverpool skipper to lift the league title in front of an Anfield crowd in 1990, to be on hand to present him with the trophy in front of fans who had waited 35 years to see it.
Reds icon Hansen, who was taken seriously ill last year, was cheered onto the pitch before handing the trophy over to Van Dijk to start a party which continues into Monday with a huge parade on Merseyside.
'I was very determined to make sure that he was going to be the one that handed the trophy to me,' said Van Dijk.
'Obviously he was ill last year. I'm glad he's looking well now and yeah, I was really happy for him that he also got his moment with the cup because he totally deserved it.'
In 2021 an image of Van Dijk meeting Hansen after a Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid went viral after Jamie Carragher declared the pair Liverpool's greatest ever centre-backs.
And they were back together on the pitch at Anfield to pose with the Premier League trophy, albeit after some gentle persuasion from Van Dijk.
On the weekend that long-time host Gary Lineker stepped down from Match of the Day, former pundit Hansen - who has kept a low profile since leaving our screens in 2014 - had to be coaxed back in front of cameras for the celebrations.
'I spoke to him when there was a photo a few years ago that me and him took,' continued Van Dijk, 'and I was very keen on getting him here and doing the presentation with me.
'We didn't actually speak before it but obviously everyone was behind the scenes making it happen,' continued Van Dijk.
'But after the trophy lift, after a couple of pictures I wanted him to be there. And apparently he already went upstairs! So we got him back and I'm glad that we got him on the pitch.'
The image of a beaming Hansen holding the trophy aloft with Van Dijk in front of the Kop will forever hold a place in Reds history, something the skipper is acutely aware of.
Van Dijk has joined Hansen on an exclusive list of captains to lead Liverpool to their 20 league titles, and has become the first Dutchman to skipper a Premier League winning side.
Even though Liverpool's league success was wrapped up a month ago, he admits he's still taking it all in.
'To join that list of 11 (Liverpool league winning) captains is something really special and I've never, ever dreamed about it,' he said.
'That's only because it was far, it was too far for me to think that this could happen.
'But anything is possible for anyone, as long as you keep believing, keep working hard and take it step by step.
'I'm glad that I've managed to write history with my team, with the club and as a Dutchman, and hopefully there's more to come.'

Man Utd ready to sell second star to Saudi Arabia after Bruno Fernandes
Manchester United are willing to sell a second player to Saudi Arabia as Bruno Fernandes considers ditching the Premier League giants for Al Hilal. Fernandes, United's best and most important player in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, has held talks over a lucrative summer move to the Saudi Pro League club. The Old Trafford captain is yet to make a final decision on his future but is believed to be leaning towards leaving United for a move that would earn him around £200m over three years. Ruben Amorim is desperate to keep Fernandes at the club but Manchester United are open to a sale given their poor financial position. Failing to qualify for the Champions League cost the club around £100m and selling Fernandes for around that figure would bolster Amorim's summer transfer kitty. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. As things stand and before any sales, United will only have around £100m to spend and that will not go far considering the Manchester giants have already activated the £62.5m release clause of Wolves star Matheus Cunha. Amorim is desperate for significant investment after Manchester United finished just 15th in the Premier League but that will require several outgoings. United have already released Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof but the club are also open to selling Andre Onana. Like Fernandes, Onana has attracted interest from the Saudi Pro League despite an inconsistent and disappointing season at Old Trafford. The Cameroon international arrived at United having just helped Inter Milan reach the Champions League final but there have been calls for the £47.5m to be replaced. According to Fabrizio Romano and The United Stand, Old Trafford bosses are open to the idea of selling Onana and will 'entertain offers' from rival clubs this summer. Recent reports have claimed Onana is in advanced talks with newly-promoted Saudi Pro League side Neom SC but while United would be open to talks, The United Stand say this is yet to occur. Most Manchester United fans are dreading the prospect of Fernandes leaving but club legend Paul Scholes believes an offer of £100m would be too good to refuse. Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, he said: 'They are talking about £100m for him, Man United cannot say no to that. 'I know he has been brilliant and carried the team on his back, but where does he actually play, what is his position? 'Do you see him as a number 10? Do you see him as a holding midfielder? He almost confuses the whole system. I mean, he has been brilliant, don't get me wrong. 'But when you're getting £100m for him, you snap your hands and take it.' Manchester United manager Amorim, meanwhile, is confident Fernandes has not played his last game for the club. 'I don't think so, I don't know for sure,' he said at the end of United's post-season tour of Asia. 'Nobody knows but I don't think so. More Trending 'I think he is seeing us taking some actions to change all the things and I think he saw that and I think he wants to stay. 'He is saying no to a lot of things but he shows he wants to win. He's really young, he's really good he needs to be in the best league in the world.' Since his £67m from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020, Fernandes has scored 98 goals in 290 appearances for Manchester United and provided 51 assists in the Premier League alone. The 30-year-old has been named the club's Player of the Year four times in five full seasons at Old Trafford. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Ange Postecoglou sends defiant message as Daniel Levy makes Spurs sack decision
Ange Postecoglou's future as Tottenham manager is yet to be confirmed but talks with another Premier League boss suggest that Daniel Levy has already made his decision Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou insists that he's planning for the future with Spurs, despite claims that Daniel Levy has decided to sack him. Postecoglou, 59, ended Tottenham's 17-year trophy drought earlier this month, as they beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final. But it came off the back of a disastrous Premier League season. Spurs finished one place above the relegation zone, losing an astonishing 22 league games. It was the most defeats any side has suffered in a 38-game Premier League campaign without being relegated and marked Tottenham's worst top-flight finish in 48 years. But Postecoglou is looking ahead to his third year in charge, even though it's been reported that chairman Levy is ready to wield the axe. Spurs are said to have held talks with Brentford manager Thomas Frank over becoming their new boss. Fulham manager Marco Silva and Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola are also in contention. It comes after Postecoglou told fans at Tottenham's Europa League victory parade that for all the best TV shows: "Season three is better than season two." What did he mean by that? "I didn't want us to just enjoy the moment," he revealed to the Australian Story ahead of a new documentary which was televised on Sunday evening in Australia. "I also wanted us to think about what's next, you know - don't settle for this. "We've got a taste of it now. My players have got a taste for it. The club's got a taste for it. Well, let's make sure we're back here again." Postecoglou has previously labelled media speculation over his future ' weird '. "I'll be honest, I've been finding it really weird talking about my future when we've done something unprecedented," the Aussie-Greek manager told reporters after Spurs lost 4-1 at home to Brighton on the final day. "I've had to answer the questions because no one else at the club is kind of in the position to do so, I guess. But I can't answer that question about me and my future, and part of me is kind of thinking, well, why have I been asked that question? But it is what it is. "And I've got no doubt, though, that this could be a real sort of defining moment for this club because wherever I've been, I've kind of made an impact where I've brought success to a club that hasn't had for a while, and you just have to look at those clubs' trajectory even after I've left, they're still competing for things. "I really think this is a moment in time where this club can really push on and be a real contender for honours on a yearly basis."
