22 Jordanian SMEs advance green business transformation with support from UNDP project
The event marked the 'successful' completion of the second cohort of the Green Growth and Jobs Accelerator project, a flagship initiative designed to empower SMEs with the tools and knowledge to transition into sustainable business models and expand their reach within Jordan and beyond, according to a UNDP statement.
The second phase provided over 12 comprehensive training sessions on green innovation and sustainability practices, alongside individually tailored advisory support for each SME, where 36 per cent of participating SMEs are led by women, and 27 per cent by youth, underscoring the project's 'strong' focus on inclusion and empowerment.
"This initiative offers progressive SMEs in Jordan a pathway towards sustainable growth and market expansion," said Majida Alassaf, Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP Jordan. "We are proud to see this cohort move closer to establishing a green economy that is inclusive, resilient, and forward-looking.'
To further promote innovation and collaboration, the programme featured a pre-acceleration day, two pitch events, and a final networking session. These platforms enabled businesses to showcase their green solutions, foster partnerships, and explore investment opportunities.
Ali Qattan, CEO of Olistic, one of the participating enterprises, shared: "The training gave us the push to evolve from a startup in Jordan into a potential global player."

Sharjah, The Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) hosted a graduation ceremony for 26 participants of the 2nd cycle of the 'Strategic Business Leadership Programme 2024–2025". The second edition of the programme attracted high-potential talents from both government and private sectors. Its training modules covered key areas, including business psychology, artificial intelligence (AI) in next-generation institutional leadership, design thinking in challenge management, innovative strategy development, risk management techniques, creative institution design, and organisational innovation. In his remarks, H.E. Abdallah Sultan Al Owais said that the Strategic Business Leadership Programme aims to produce a new cadre of qualified leaders, reflecting the fundamental shifts in institutional leadership concepts. 'Digital technologies require unconventional leadership capabilities. Accordingly, the Sharjah Chamber adopts an advanced leadership development framework focused on adaptability and continuous growth, equipping leaders to merge practical experience with contemporary management knowledge,' he added. For her part, Maryam Saif Al Shamsi noted that the programme was designed to offer a comprehensive educational experience combining theoretical content with applied practice. It featured workshops led by accredited international experts and practical capstone projects. She added that the programme concluded with a field study tour to Spain in collaboration with the University of Salamance, offering participants a unique opportunity to explore global best practices and gain hands-on experience and global insights that will enhance their careers and strengthen their leadership skills. The graduation ceremony featured a visual presentation outlining the programme's milestones and the comprehensive training offered to participants. The programme integrated academic insights from renowned global institutions with hands-on learning through workshops and project work. This approach underscored the programme's value in equipping participants with both theoretical expertise and practical leadership competencies. The ceremony concluded with H.E. Abdallah Sultan Al Owais and Maryam Saif Al Shamsi honouring the programme's participants, representing the Sharjah Electricity, Water, and Gas Authority (SEWA) and other government and private entities operating in Sharjah. Paul Hilton to lead Mott MacDonald's Middle East, South Asia and international development business
Mott MacDonald, the global engineering, development and management consultancy, has appointed Paul Hilton as managing director for its Middle East, South Asia and international development business. He takes on this role after three years leading operations in Mott MacDonald's Middle East business. In his new role Paul will be responsible for a team of almost 3000 people. The focus of their work spans the delivery of world class projects across energy, infrastructure and buildings in the Middle East and South Asia, and donor-funded development projects in low- and middle-income countries across Asia and Africa. Paul began his career at Mott MacDonald in 2002 and has extensive international experience in engineering, management and development consulting in a variety of markets including rail, aviation, environment, water, power transmission and nuclear research. Before moving to the Middle East, he was Mott MacDonald's advisory and international development lead for South East Asia, based in Singapore, and his career also spans major business hubs in Europe and North America. He is an experienced professional, holding chartership in civil engineering and project management, and is a Fellow of the Association for Project Management. Iraq's Basra governorate awards mega desalination project to Sino-Iraqi consortium
Iraq's Basra Governorate has awarded a major seawater desalination project to a consortium comprising Iraq's Al-Rida Group and Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina) Mobilisation for the 1 million cubic metres per day (m3/day) project, which will use reverse osmosis technology, has started, a statement issued by the Basra governor's office said. The project scope also includes a dedicated power station to secure uninterrupted electricity for operations, and a 240-kilometre water transmission network connecting to nine main distribution centres across the governorate. The statement didn't disclose project costs or timelines. PowerChina has delivered over seven desalination projects in the region, including the 900,000 m³/day Taweelah plant in Abu Dhabi, the world's largest reverse osmosis facility, and the Rabigh 3 and Jubail plants in Saudi Arabia (600,000 m³/day each).
