Govt. nod for ₹3-crore special package for paddy procurement in Kuttanad
Mill owners had declined to lift the harvested paddy citing poor quality, forcing the government to come up with a solution. Following this, the government had roped in the Oil Palm India for procuring the paddy. The Agriculture Department will assess the quality of the paddy and the Director of Agriculture will determine the price.
The Agriculture Director has also been tasked with assessing the extent of the crop damage.
Nearly 70 'Paadasekharams' in the Alappuzha municipality, Punnapra North, Thakazhi, Karuvatta, Ambalappuzha south, Nedumudi, Kainakari and Pulinkunnu had reported saline water intrusion, affecting the quality of the paddy and the yield, Mr. Prasad said.
As the harvested paddy fell short of the Fair Average Quality (FAQ) in accordance with the Minimum Support Price/Public Distribution System (MSP/PDS), the paddy procurement had run into trouble.
It was also decided that the quantum of paddy that meets the FAQ requirement will be procured by the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco) as per the existing procurement mechanism.

The NDA government remains committed to farmer welfare and agricultural development, said I&PR Minister Kolusu Parthasarathy on Wednesday. He stated that the Agriculture Department is working on comprehensive plans to boost farm incomes, improve crop productivity, and expand market facilities, with the aim of resolving farmers' issues promptly. Highlighting the Annadata Sukhibhava scheme, he said 1,60,968 farmers in the Eluru district have received ₹107.08 crore directly in their bank accounts to meet crop investment costs. Beneficiaries have responded positively across the State, he added. In the Nuzvid constituency alone, 35,529 farmers received ₹23.64 crore. Mr. Parthasarathy assured that all eligible farmers will be covered under the scheme. Those yet to receive the benefit should approach local agriculture officers, who have been directed to clear technical issues immediately and ensure quick disbursal.

Scaria Pillai C.J., of Nallepilli, Palakkad, has won the 2024 State-level Sibi Kallingal Memorial Karshakothama Award for the best farmer instituted by the State government. The award carries a cash prize of ₹2 lakh. Minister for Agriculture P. Prasad announced the 2024 State Farm Awards here on Wednesday. The awards were given in 46 categories this year. Vani V., of Danappadi in Harippad, Alappuzha district, has won the 'Karshakathilakam' award for the best woman farmer. The award carries ₹1 lakh. The award for the best farmer in the transgender category, introduced for the first time, went to Vinodini of Njakkanal, Krishnapuram, Alappuzha. Varghese Thomas of Vechoochira, Pathanamthitta, won the award in the differently-abled farmer category, while Cicil Chandran B.C. of Kulathur, Thiruvananthapuram, won the State award for the best hi-tech farmer. Fuselage Innovation Pvt Ltd at the KINFRA Hi-Tech Park, Kalamassery won the award for the best start-up. The Meenangadi grama panchayat has won the C. Merge PDS and cooperative society outlets, say salesmen at PDS shops
MADURAI: Salesmen working at Public Distribution System (PDS) outlets across the state have demanded that the state government should merge the PDS shops run by Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC) with those operated by cooperative societies, saying such a move could resolve wage disparities and improve supply distribution. The TNCSC runs more than 1,500 PDS outlets, whereas various cooperative societies, under the state's Cooperative Department, operate around 35,000 shops across the state, according to government records. CITU-Cooperative Department Employees' Union (Dindigul) secretary Sadiq Ali said many cooperative societies, such as the Southern Railway Employees Co-operative Society, though started for different purposes, now run PDS outlets by procuring provisions from the TNCSC. 'Though the nature of work of the salesmen in the outlets run by the two entities is similar, the salary structure is quite different. The monthly salary of a salesman of a PDS shop under cooperative societies ranges between Rs 6,500 (entry level) and Rs 36,000, but those under the TNCSC receive an entry-level pay of Rs 25,000 a month,' he added. CITU-Cooperative Department Employees Union (Tiruppur) secretary P Gowthaman said the salesmen at TNCSC-run outlets hold the post of Civil Supplies Clerk and are eligible to be promoted as assistant managers, branch managers and even department managers. 'However, for those working at shops operated by cooperative societies, once appointed as salesmen, they always remain the same,' he added. Salesmen at cooperative society-operated outlets would greatly benefit from a merger, said CITU-Cooperative Workers Union (Cuddalore) secretary K Jeevanandam. 'Over the last two decades, they have been suffering from several financial issues. After several protests, the state government fixed their pay under the Consolidation Category during the 2010s, and added an increment in 2013,' he said. Top TNCSC officials, however, were not optimistic of a merger, citing the difference in pay structure and the training system in place. Former TNCSC general manager S Gunasekaran said the corporation has a time-scale pay structure for its employees. 'Salesmen -- or billing clerks -- are trained on the procedures for agricultural products and other supplies. Later, they can be promoted to junior assistant and administrative assistant posts after departmental examinations. Every step, they will be offered training,' he said. An official from the Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department said, 'PDS shops operated by cooperative societies follow the guidelines of the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Societies Act, 1983. These guidelines differ in terms of implementation, and these societies have different hierarchies altogether. Besides, such a merger is a policy decision that requires several high-level meetings. So far, just one meeting has been held by the Civil Supplies Department.'
