ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Syria has blamed Israel for recent unrest in Suwayda province but has agreed to meet again after US-mediated talks between them in Paris this week produced no results, Syrian state-run media reported.
'The meeting did not result in any final agreements, but rather consisted of preliminary consultations aimed at reducing tensions and reopening communication channels amid the ongoing escalation since early December,' a diplomatic source told al-Ikhbariah TV.
On Thursday, US special envoy for Syria Tom Barrack said he held talks with Syrian and Israeli officials in Paris. The Syrian side included representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the General Intelligence Service, according to al-Ikhbariah.
Barrack said the goal of the talks was 'dialogue and de-escalation.'
Nearly 1,400 people were killed in clashes this month in Suwayda province between Druze fighters, Bedouin tribes, and government forces, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The violence drew in Israeli intervention in support of the Druze before the US brokered a ceasefire.
The diplomatic source said Syria blamed the violence on Israel and warned that continued 'aggressive policies' threaten regional security. Damascus also demanded the 'immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces from the points they recently advanced to.'
'The unity, integrity, and sovereignty of Syrian territory is a non-negotiable principle, and Suwayda and its people are an integral part of the Syrian state, whose status cannot be compromised or isolated under any pretext,' the source told al-Ikhbariah.
Damascus has agreed to further meetings 'with the aim of continuing discussions and evaluating steps that would consolidate stability and contain tension in the south,' the source said.

Shafaq News – Baghdad Iraq's Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court has handed a one-year suspended prison sentence to Jamal al-Karbouli, a prominent Sunni political figure and head of the al-Hal (Solution) Party, a judicial source told Shafaq News on Sunday. The conviction was issued under Article 453 of the Iraqi Penal Code, which criminalizes breach of trust involving the misuse of entrusted movable property for personal or unauthorized purposes. Al-Karbouli was initially arrested in April 2021 on corruption-related charges but was released later that year, on November 28. Al-Karbouli, born in 1965 and trained as a medical doctor, rose to national prominence as President of the Iraqi Red Crescent Society during the post-2003 period. He later transitioned into politics, founding the National Movement for Development and Reform, better known as the al-Hal Party, one of the leading Sunni political platforms in Iraq. He is also Sheikh (leader) of al-Karabla tribe, part of the Dulaim tribal confederation in al-Anbar province. Throughout his political career, he maintained a role in shaping Sunni parliamentary blocs and electoral coalitions, often positioning himself as a rival to other Sunni leaders such as former Speaker of Parliament Mohammed al-Halbousi.

In a statement, the Security Media Cell of the Joint Operations Command said that 'a reprehensible incident' occurred at the ministry's Karkh district office on Sunday morning, resulting in injuries among security forces. In a previous statement on Sunday, the Iraqi interior ministry noted that 'the incident coincided with a newly appointed director beginning his duties,' adding that Iraqi federal police units and Karkh emergency patrols 'quickly intervened and came under direct gunfire, resulting in several officers and personnel sustaining various injuries.'
