Bach Musica NZ captivates with Mozart and Bach at Auckland Town Hall

NZ Herald24-06-2025
From the start, Rita Paczian and her musicians relished the simmering syncopations and pungent suspensions of its first movement, with bass lines graduating from urgent murmurings to a mighty roar.
Shapely woodwind and forceful brass joined in with a confident stylishness that would serve the music well, right through to Mozart's ebullient finale.
Soloist Madeleine Xiao introduced herself with cool precision, offering no hint of fiery passagework to come, especially in the cadenzas penned by Beethoven.
If the second Romanza movement might have had its opening theme a little more tonally caressed, her impassioned virtuosity when major shifted to minor took the breath away.

Xiao's encore, Liszt's transcription of Schumann's song Widmung (Dedication) released glowing, soulful melodies from within torrents of incendiary bravura.
Significantly, this was dedicated, we were told, to Katherine Austin, one of our most treasured pianists, now battling ill health.
Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was famously mocked by his own father, the great Johann Sebastian, for writing music that was Prussian blue and hence susceptible to fading.
After the interval, the dazzling opening chorus of his Magnificat put a lie to that cruel paternal dismissal.
Further rousing choruses afforded Paczian's choir the opportunity to sing with molto gusto; in effective contrast with the nuanced phrases of the work's Et misericordia.
The four young soloists almost stole the show on Sunday night, effortlessly searching out the musical truth of Bach's sometimes awkward vocal writing.

Elizabeth Mandeno's Quia respexit enthralled with the soprano's unruffled clarity and admirable projection.
Edward Laurenson took up the challenge of his Fecit potentiam with an infectious bravado, navigating through an eccentric accompaniment to enjoy every flourish, leaping octaves as if they were adjacent notes.
Sweet-toned tenor Taliai Fifita was impressively agile in the florid demands of his Quia fecit, as well as in his mellifluous duetting with mezzo Katie Trigg, whose lustrous voice was a source of unqualified joy whenever it rose from the texture.

Wegovy, Mounjaro sales in India double on month in July

By Rishika Sadam and Kashish Tandon HYDERABAD (Reuters) -Sales of Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and U.S. rival Eli Lilly's Mounjaro in India doubled in July from a month earlier, data from research firm Pharmarack showed on Thursday. Demand for the blockbuster anti-obesity drugs, which help control blood sugar and slow digestion, has been on an upswing in the world's most populous nation. Sales of Wegovy, launched locally in June, more than doubled to 5,000 units or 70 million rupees ($798,230) in July, the data showed. Mounjaro sales also doubled month-on-month to 157,000 units or 470 million rupees. "Though Wegovy has a strong prescriber base because of Rybelsus, substantial promotion may be needed to reach the Mounjaro patient base for the injectable market," Pharmarack's Vice President (Commercial) Sheetal Sapale said in a statement. In India, Novo has been selling oral semaglutide pills under the brand name Rybelsus since 2022 for type 2 diabetes. Mounjaro's sales have soared 15 times since March, when the drug was launched in India. ($1 = 87.6790 Indian rupees) Sign in to access your portfolio

Guidehouse Research Explores Distributed Energy Resources Aggregation (DERA) Market Integration

New analysis outlines state of DERA market integration and next steps for implementation BOULDER, Colo. , Aug. 7, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- A new report from Guidehouse Research explores distributed energy resources aggregation (DERA) market integration progress, projected growth, and steps to implement U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Order 2222 of 2020. Since FERC Order 2222, the regional transmission organizations (RTOs) and independent system operators (ISOs) that control the wholesale electricity markets in the U.S. have made substantial progress in implementing DERA participation. However, according to a new report from Guidehouse Research, in navigating the complexities of FERC's market criteria, each RTO/ISO has refined its market concept in its own way, which presents a challenge for the DER industry to fully understand and adapt to the new DERA participation models. "FERC Order 2222 is intended to better enable aggregations of DER to participate in wholesale electricity markets, with the goal of boosting DER development and market participation to meet increased energy demand, ease congestion on the electric grid, and satisfy residential, commercial, and industrial customers,'" says Adam Stein, senior research analyst with Guidehouse Research. "DERA market plans involve many complex structures that have been highly debated among stakeholders, including RTOs/ISOs, FERC, DER developers and aggregators, renewable energy industry organizations, consumer nonprofits, local DUs, and transmission owners." According to the report, Guidehouse Research suggests: RTOs/ISOs should continually refine market protocols by revising tariffs, when necessary, to enhance DERA market participation and mitigate any market flaws or grid failures. Distribution utilities (DUs) should enhance existing programs and create new ones that compensate DER and DERAs at the retail level, so that DUs can directly benefit from the injected energy, grid services, and grid stability provided. DER developers and aggregators must thoroughly understand wholesale electricity market rules and DERA participation options to maximize DERA viability and grow business across the U.S. The report, FERC Order 2222: Implementation Is Progressing, but More Work Is Needed from Stakeholders, outlines the current status of DERA market integration across FERC-regulated RTOs/ISOs, projected nationwide growth, and the steps stakeholders must take to realize the full potential of FERC Order 2222.
