PH needs to compete with digitalized neighboring countries
The Philippines has to compete with its neighboring countries when it comes to digitalization so that the country can easily do business with them, President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr said.
''Because that's the only way to do it. You cannot operate in 2025 na kinakamay-kamay mo ang forms, pupunta-punta ka sa opisina, take three days, tatlong araw, kasi akala mo tapos na yung dokumento mo, ah hindi, may kulang pa ito, pumunta ka doon, tapos lalapit na 'yung fixer sa'yo, the whole experience, the whole bad experience,'' Marcos told GMA Integrated News when asked why he has since pushed for using the eGov PH Super app.
(You cannot operate in 2025 that you're just using forms, you will go to offices and it will take three days, you'll think your document is finished but it's not. Then a fixer will approach you, the whole experience, the whole bad experience.)
''So that doesn't work anymore. And if we are to compete as a country, as an economy, kailangan natin makipagsabayan (we need to compete). And look at China, how digitalized China is. We have to be at that level. Look at Singapore. Look at Korea. Ito 'yung mga karatig bansa natin (these are our neighboring countries). These are the people we do business with. So to be able to do business with them properly, we need to digitalize,'' Marcos added.
Marcos said digitalization is not only for business or for education.
''It's absolutely imperative now that children know how to use a computer, they know how to use the internet, and they know how to do work on the internet,'' Marcos said.
To achieve digitalization, Marcos said the public should be informed and educated as well, especially those living in far-flung areas.
''We will have to educate our people but again, 89 million, that's a good majority already of Filipinos who can,'' Marcos said.
Marcos wants to increase awareness of the use of eGov PH Super app to provide easier access to national and local government services.
The eGov PH Super App, which has more than 13 million users and offers 47 integrated service modules with over 150 million transactions.—LDF, GMA Integrated News

Gatchalian wants 2026 education budget at 4% of GDP
Senator Sherwin Gatchalian on Saturday said he is setting his sights on allocating a budget for education equivalent to 4% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) for fiscal year 2026, in a bid to address the education crisis and invest in the nation's future. Gatchalian also highlighted the need to fund the Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning (ARAL) Program and proposed the revival of the counterpart program, where the national government and local government units share the cost of classroom construction. Explanation sought over 'rights violations' of some Pinoys nabbed by ICE
NEW YORK—Several U.S. lawmakers are demanding an explanation regarding the alleged mistreatment of Asian lawful permanent residents—including Filipinos—who were arrested by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In a letter addressed to U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus expressed their concern after several Asian Americans detained by the CBP and ICE were allegedly deprived of their right to legal counsel and due process. The letter cited troubling cases such as that of Filipino Mrs. Lewelyn Dixon, who was detained after living legally in the U.S. for 50 years and Mr. Maximo Londonio, a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, who was held in ICE custody for two months following a vacation in the Philippines. 'These cases suggest possible violations of constitutional protections. The U.S. Constitution provides critical due process protections for all persons within the United States, regardless of immigration status," the lawmakers wrote. "The Fifth Amendment protects against actions by the federal government that violate due process, while the Sixth Amendment guarantees the right to legal counsel in criminal cases. The U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed that LPRs are entitled to these same protections,' they added. The letter—signed by fourteen lawmakers—was led by New York Representative Grace Meng, who serves as Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus. The lawmakers are requesting an explanation regarding the denial of the right to legal counsel and constitutional protections to those in CBP custody, as well as the total number of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents who have been detained since President Donald Trump took office.

Marcos says he will sign bill postponing barangay, SK polls

(Photo from PCO) President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced he will sign the bill postponing the 2025 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE). "I'll sign it," Marcos said in a media forum Bengaluru, India when asked if he intends to sign the bill or simply allow it to lapse into law. Marcos pointed out that the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) in October this year should be given focus. The Philippines concluded its midterm national and local elections in May. "We are facing one of the biggest elements here, kakatapos lang natin ng malaking eleksyon, midterm election... You have to remember, the BARMM election that is upcoming in October is the first time we have ever had this kind of election at all. Sa buong kasaysayan ng Pilipinas, hindi pa nagkaroon ng BARMM Parliament na hinalal ng tao. So, that is why it is so important," Marcos said. 'If that election (BARMM) fails, malaking bagay, malaking failure 'yan doon sa peace process. Kaya't kailangan na kailangan maging matagumpay ang pagganap ng halalan ng BARMM. And that's why we really are focusing on that,' he added. Earlier, Commission on Elections chairperson George Garcia said Malacañang informed the poll body of the law signing to be held on Tuesday, August 12. The 2025 BSKE is initially set on December 1, 2025.
