Deloitte is fighting employee burnout with Legos

Given the rise of mental health woes, financial strain, and concerns over layoffs, there's a lot weighing on the modern employee. But one company is hoping to offset the stress with . . . Legos?
Deloitte is offering to pay for employees' Legos to help them connect away their stress. The firm, which already offered well-being items and experiences, updated its employee subsidy program on June 1 to cover the toy. According to internal documents accessed by Business Insider, Deloitte will reimburse employees up to $1,000 for gym memberships and equipment, spa services, gaming consoles, and, now, Legos and puzzles.
The move is getting mixed reactions on social media. On X, comments about the Lego perk ranged from 'cheaper than therapy' to lots of laughing emojis to utter confusion. One popular post points out that the company had layoffs to cut costs just prior to announcing the Lego incentive, hinting that maybe the funds could be better allocated to retain employees rather than to add offbeat incentives. 'Corporate culture is irrevocably broken and backwards,' the post reads.
One Deloitte employee told Business Insider that the perk was received with a mix of jokes and enthusiasm. 'Most of the responses are things like 'Lego?!?!? Finally!' or jokes about how they can now rationalize buying the coveted Millennium Falcon Star Wars Lego set,' the employee said. (The set costs $850).
While Legos might be fun, or even therapeutic, employees who are battling against very real modern concerns might need more than building blocks to avoid burnout. And that may be especially true at firms like Deloitte, where the workweek can average 55 hours. Fast Company reached out, but Deloitte declined to comment.
Matthew Owenby, chief strategy officer and head of HR at insurance company Aflac, tells Fast Company that employees today are up against big challenges. 'Five years after the COVID-19 pandemic first started a national conversation around mental health [and] employee burnout persists at very high levels,' Owenby says. 'According to the 2024-2025 Aflac WorkForces Report, more than half of all U.S. employees say they face at least moderate burnout, with nearly a quarter experiencing high burnout.'
That report also points out that nearly half (47%) of respondents said having an employer who respects the importance of time off helps with their work-life balance. Likewise, 51% said more paid time off (PTO) is the most effective way to alleviate burnout. Shockingly, the report did not ask respondents how much Legos impacted their well-being.
Owenby says that addressing the burnout epidemic is not quite as easy as providing a stipend for puzzles and building blocks. Instead he recommends examining employees' heavy workloads, giving them flexibility and time off. 'When asked about the most effective ways to address burnout, employees offered simple and straightforward solutions: giving employees the option to work from home, increasing paid time off, and creating company-sponsored self-care programs,' Owneby said. Again, Legos did not make the list.
Sadly, while workers desperately seem to need PTO, they don't always feel they can take it. A June 2025 report from LiveCareer showed that one in three workers are worried that taking vacation days will lead to layoffs. 'Fear of layoffs and job insecurity is at an all-time high, and these concerns are influencing the workforce to deprioritize their overall well-being,' Jasmine Escalera, career expert for LiveCareer, said in the report. 'When employees hesitate to take the PTO they've earned, it can seriously impact their mental health, productivity, and overall engagement at work.'
That's not to say that hobbies like social time, crafts, or even playing with Legos can't be helpful. However, when it comes to employee satisfaction, a Lego allowance feels a bit like, well, child's play. Because unless those Lego sets come with an extra week of vacation and the time to actually play with them, how much good can they really do for employees anyway?

Texas stops providing new funding for border wall construction

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas has stopped putting new money toward building a U.S.-Mexico border wall, shifting course after installing only a fraction of the hundreds of miles of potential barrier that Republican Gov. Greg Abbott set out to construct four years ago. State lawmakers this month approved a new Texas budget that does not include continued funding for the wall, which had been a multibillion-dollar priority for Abbott as part of a sprawling immigration crackdown. He even took the unusual step of soliciting private donations for construction, saying in 2021 that many Americans wanted to help. On Tuesday, Abbott's office said President Donald Trump's aggressive efforts to curb immigration allowed the state to adjust. The halt in funding was first reported by The Texas Tribune. 'Thanks to President Trump's bold leadership, the federal government is finally fulfilling its obligation to secure the southern border and deport criminal illegal immigrants,' Abbott spokesman Andrew Mahaleris said. 'Because of these renewed federal assets in Texas, our state can now adjust aspects of state-funded border security efforts.' The state has completed 65 miles (104 kilometers) of border wall since construction began. The Texas border with Mexico is roughly 1,200 miles (1,931 kilometers). The wall has gone up at a slow pace as the state has navigated the drawn-out process of buying private land and confronting local opposition in some places. Abbott announced plans for the wall at a time when large numbers of migrants were showing up at the border, saying in 2021 that he believed a combination of state-owned land and volunteered private property would 'yield hundreds of miles to build a border wall.' The number of migrant crossings has fallen dramatically this year. 'There was no need for it in the first place,' said Scott Nicol, a board member for Friends of the Wildlife Corridor, a habitat preservation group in the Rio Grande Valley. He has criticized the wall as ineffective. 'The only thing that's changed is the political dynamic,' he said. The new budget approved by Texas lawmakers allocates about $3.4 billion for border security for two years. That amount will not be used to build out new projects for the wall and instead go to the Texas Department of Safety and the Texas National Guard, the main agencies responsible for Operation Lone Star, Abbott's key immigration program launched in 2021 during the Biden administration. The money allocated for border security is nearly half the $6.5 billion that was dedicated to immigration efforts the last time lawmakers earmarked the state budget two years ago. Funds previously allocated for the wall will allow work on it to continue through 2026 and 'will set the federal government up for success,' said Republican Sen. Joan Huffman, the lead budget writer in the state Senate. The agency responsible for constructing the wall has about $2.5 billion remaining in funding to cover up to 85 additional miles (85 additional kilometers) of the wall by 2026, according to a statement made in April by Texas Facilities Commission executive director Mike Novak, whose agency is overseeing construction of the project. 'This wall should have never been built, it's useless,' said Bekah Hinojosa, co-founder of the South Texas Environmental Justice Network. SAN FRANCISCO — Rafael Devers strolled into the clubhouse side-by-side with home run king Barry Bonds, a fellow left-handed slugger who San Francisco's new big hitter has long admired from afar. 'I think just looking at him my game has already improved a lot,' Devers joked as he was formally introduced by the Giants on Tuesday, when he was set to be designated hitter batting third in the series opener against the Cleveland Guardians. Devers is determined to leave his own lasting mark on the franchise in what is a much-needed fresh start for him and a monumental mid-season acquisition for Buster Posey and San Francisco's front office. And whatever went wrong in Boston , Devers is done discussing any issues he had with the Red Sox and eager to move forward across the country with the Giants. 'That's in the past now, I'm looking ahead and focusing on what I have here being a San Francisco Giant,' Devers said. 'I'm eager to go out there and play and see what I can do.' With a bright smile to match his bright new No. 16 jersey, Devers insisted he will play anywhere and do whatever manager Bob Melvin and his staff ask. 'I really like his answers by the way,' said Posey, in his first year as president of baseball operations. The Giants will take on a mega contract after Devers signed a new $331 million, 11-year deal in January 2023. He joins several other stars here with long-term contracts — shortstop Willy Adames has a seven-year, $182 million deal and third baseman Matt Chapman at $151 million over six years through 2030 — as Posey builds a roster he expects will compete for another World Series championship, like the ones the Giants won with him as their star catcher in 2010, '12 and '14. San Francisco last made the playoffs in 2021, when it won a franchise-record 107 games and edged the rival Dodgers for the NL West title on the final day. 'I think this organization has talent, they have won championships. I am here to play, to win and to win a championship,' Devers said through an interpreter. Posey thanked ownership for its willingness to go for it and traded for Devers to boost a club that has lacked power and struggled to score runs for extended stretches this year. The trade announced Sunday came together in the past few weeks after countless hours and conversations. 'I think the persistence really paid off,' chairman Greg Johnson said. While the Giants will gradually get Devers up to speed playing the field again since he has strictly been a DH this year, they know he has plenty of mentors eager to help. Devers was scheduled to do some fielding work at first base, the very position he didn't want to play after losing his spot at third when the Red Sox signed Alex Bregman to a $120 million, three-year contract in February to be their third baseman — the spot where Devers made 130 starts last year. 'When you have a guy like Barry Bonds around, arguably the greatest hitter of all-time, it's an added benefit for sure,' Posey said. It will only be a matter of days before Devers' first reunion with the Red Sox, who visit Oracle Park for a weekend series. He was batting .271 with 14 home runs and 57 RBIs over 72 games as Boston's primary DH. When asked what the differences will be as he begins anew, Devers noted: 'It's the same baseball. I'm here to give my 100%.' The 28-year-old Devers hadn't been thrilled with the idea of playing first base in Boston but thanked the people who cheered him, calling them 'great fans who supported me my whole time there.' After all the fanfare of his introduction and receiving his jersey in front of most of his teammates, who made time to be at his news conference before doing their pregame routines, Devers got to work.
