India A vs England Lions Day 1: Nair's redemption arc to continue on 186*, Jurel dazzles with rollicking 82*

Canterbury: Karun Nair's redemption arc is bound to continue on Day 2 after he shattered the England Lions' backbone with his scorching display with the bat. At the same time, Dhruv Jurel pushed his case for a spot in India's playing XI for the upcoming five Tests in England, scheduled to begin on June 20. At the end of the opening day of the first unofficial Test between India A and England Lions, the touring party piled up 409/3 on the board, with Nair and Jurel unbeaten with scores of 186(246) and 82(104), respectively. India A dominated the entire opening day to turn the contest into a lopsided affair, courtesy of Nair's rip-roaring display that lasted most of the first session and the remainder of the day. He upped the ante after India A lost its opening pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran early in the opening day. The final session reflected Nair and Jurel's sheer dominance. They nullified the spin and pace traps laid out by the hosts to derail their progress. India A lost Sarfaraz Ahmed on 92 and the 181-run partnership for the third wicket in the first over after the tea break; Jurel joined Nair at the crease and adopted a swift approach to keep the scoreboard ticking. With Jurel firing all cylinders and Nair increasing his tempo, the duo added 182 runs to stamp India's authority in the final session. The duo lashed out at any loose delivery that landed in their arc. Nair sprinted for a single, bringing up his 150 in the 73rd over off Rehan Ahmed. In the 80th over, Jurel targeted the deep backward point to find the boundary rope and lift his bat for a valiant half-century. Jurel picked up the pace from that point and dealt with boundaries to lift India to a fighting total and end the day with an unbeaten 177-run partnership. Before Jurel and Nair enchanted the spectators with their sizzling display on Canterbury's green strip, Sarfaraz and Nair took the mantle of ensuring India remained unscathed in the second innings. After lunch, they batted their hearts out and made England Lions toil for wickets. While in the opening session, after being put to bat, skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran and the young sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal came out to open with hopes of getting valuable game time before the five high-stakes fixtures between the two modern-day giants. Easwaran, a household name in India's domestic circuit and with a plethora of experience in the red-ball format, couldn't conjure up a consequential performance. He oozed confidence, took his time to open his account, and left the deliveries that travelled in the corridor of uncertainty but got undone by a single delivery and returned cheaply on 8(17). With picture-perfect strokes, the 29-year-old found the boundary rope twice but got pinned in front of the stumps by Josh Hull. On the other hand, Jaiswal dazzled on the crease with a blend of aggression and composure. He switched his tempo according to the demands of the delivery and garnered three boundaries and a towering maximum. With runs flowing from his bat with a touch of elegance, Jaiswal's downfall came down to his aggressive mindset. The 23-year-old switched to white ball mode, took a wild swing at Eddie Jack's delivery and gave away an edge to England Lions captain and wicketkeeper James Rew, who confirmed his return ticket on 24(55).

Binance civil enforcement action dismissed by SEC

In June 2023, The Securities and Exchange Commission filed charges alleging that the crypto asset trading platform committed a variety of securities law violations. 2 This content has been selected, created and edited by the Finextra editorial team based upon its relevance and interest to our community. This week, a litigation release revealed that the SEC filed a joint stipulation with Binance entities and founder Changpeng Zhao to drop, with prejudice, the ongoing civil enforcement action. The release says: "In the exercise of its discretion and as a policy matter, the Commission determined that the dismissal of this action is appropriate. Furthermore, as stated in the joint stipulation, 'the Commission's decision to seek dismissal of this Litigation does not necessarily reflect the Commission's position on any other litigation or proceeding."" Celebrating the news on X, Binance posted: "Huge win for crypto today. The SEC's case against us is dismissed. Thank you to Chairman Atkins & the Trump team for pushing back against regulation by enforcement. U.S. innovation is back on track - and it's just the beginning." This message was built upon in a blog post, which describes this as "a major win for our customers, our business, and the digital asset industry." The blog continues: "From the outset, we maintained that the SEC's claims were baseless, unjustified, and politically motivated. Instead of providing regulatory clarity to help American consumers safely access the benefits of digital assets, the SEC chose instead to wage an aggressive campaign of regulation by enforcement. This approach has created nothing but harm for American consumers and businesses alike. "There is a real and serious cost when a powerful regulatory agency like the SEC, which has a mandate to prevent fraud and ensure fair and orderly markets, instead chooses to bring unwarranted cases against companies that have not violated U.S. laws and regulations. This overreach has taken a significant toll on our business, forcing us to divert significant resources to defend against claims that never should have been brought. However, with today's victory and new leadership in place at the SEC, a meaningful shift is underway." In March 2023, the US Commodity Futures and Trading Commission (CFTC) charged Binance and two of its top executives with "willful evasion of US law", seeking penalties and permanent trading and registration bans against the digital asset firm. In June of the same year, Binance failed in its bid to secure a virtual asset service provider (VASP) license in the Netherlands, forcing the crypto exchange to exit the country. Alongside that, French prosecutors started investigating Binance for concerns regarding possible "aggravated money laundering by taking part in investment operations, concealment and conversion, the latter being carried out by perpetrators of offenses having generated profits." At the time, the SEC alleged securities law violations and accused the crypto exchange of engaging in an "extensive web of deception." In October 2023, after the UK's FCA introduced new rules outlining that firms wishing to promote cryptoassets in the UK must be authorised or registered by the FCA, or alternatively have their marketing approved by an authorised firm, Binance initially engaged to review and approve financial promotions, but it soon became apparent that the company was not licensed to do this. Late in November, Binance agreed to pay $4.3 billion in penalties and forfeitures in order to settle a long-running investigation by the US Department of Justice and other federal agencies. Founder Changpeng Zhao also plead guilty to violating anti-money laundering charges and stepped down as CEO, with Richard Teng, Binance's head of regional markets, taking over as the new CEO. "I made mistakes, and I must take responsibility. This is best for our community, for Binance, and for myself," Zhao posted on X at the time. Along with the Department of Justice lawsuit, Binance also settled the charges with the CFTC.

Download Festival is engulfed by trans row as acts threaten a boycott after organisers follow Supreme Court ruling and enforce single sex toilet policy

LGBTQ acts have threatened to boycott the Download Festival after organisers followed the Supreme Court 's ruling and said trans men and women should use toilets according to their biological sex - not the gender they identify as. Trans pop-punk artist Noahfinnce says the decision will be put people 'in danger', declaring the decision means: 'My trans sisters have to risk outing themselves in the men's [toilets]'. The row has come to the attention of Harry Potter author and women's rights campaigner JK Rowling, who said of the complaints by trans artists and campaigners: 'Nothing short of women's total capitulation will be good enough for them'. The rock and metal festival held in Donington Park, Leicestershire, between June 13 and 15 will be attended by up to 130,000 people and will feature performances from Green Day, McFly, Korn and Weezer. And six weeks on since the Supreme Court ruled trans women are legally male and trans men are legally female for the purposes of the Equality Act, Download applied it to its portaloo policy. It said this year it would be following the guidance issued by the Equalities and Human Rights Commission that 'trans women (biological men) should not be permitted to use the women's facilities and trans men (biological women) should not be permitted to use the men's facilities.' The vast majority of the portaloos on site will still be gender neutral. Yet Noahfinnce has threatened to quit claiming the decision is 'unsafe' - with some trans men and women vowing to defy the rules and use whatever toilet they want. 'I had a great time playing last year but will not be attending again if I have to queue up for the ladies' and my trans sisters have to risk outing themselves in the men's. All this does is put trans people in danger', the singer said. In a post on Twitter, Noahfinnce wrote: 'Hey @DownloadFest what the f**k are you doing? How have you got the gall to invite trans people like me to play your festival, then ban them from using the toilet? If the only way we can p*ss is by outing ourselves, then you've created an unsafe environment'. Manchester band Witch Fever said: 'The threat to trans people's safety by forcing them to enter toilets that are assigned to a gender that they don't associate with is a complete f***ing tragedy. We are hoping this decision gets changed'. American rock band Pinkshift then said on Instagram: 'Playing @downloadfest was fun last year but what f*cking music festival policies gendered bathrooms? 'Thanks Noahfinnce for being the only artist [we've] seen talk about this. If Download is part of your life, speak up. They think they can get away with discrimination in the year of 2025'. Download then issued a statement declaring that the 'Festival has always been and remains for everyone', adding: 'We want to reassure all of our customers that the majority of the toilets across the site are gender neutral'. Artist and campaigner Birdy Rose said that Download had done the right thing to offer single sex toilet facilities and gender neutral toilet facilities to be available to those who want to use them. But she added: 'This should have been a good and reasonable way to make everybody happy whilst also abiding by the law. Instead 'trans' activists seem to be having an absolute meltdown, claiming that this is 'immoral' and men should just ignore the law and enter the female spaces anyway. 'So what have we learned here? Nothing is ever good enough for the woke lunatics'. Olympian Sharron Davies then tweeted: 'This is exactly what happened in world aquatics. They put on a trans events at a World Cup in Berlin. After endless complains about inclusion. So they didn't even have to be the best in their country like everyone else. Yet no one turned up. These men only want an unfair advantage in a category they have no right to be in. Very revealing… every time'. Equalities Minister Bridget Phillipson said last month that 'services should be accessed on the basis of biological sex', meaning trans women should usually use male toilets if there is no alternative provision, despite last year saying that a man who had legally changed gender 'would be using female toilets'. The Equality and Human Rights Commission has now issued guidance stating unequivocally that in workplaces and places open to the public 'trans women (biological men) should not be permitted to use the women's facilities and trans men (biological women) should not be permitted to use the men's facilities'. But Labour has been accused of being in chaos over the Supreme Court's April ruling. Guidance for schools on pupils who identify as the opposite sex may not be published before the summer holidays, for example. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has demanded Keir Starmer apologise to women after the Supreme Court's biological sex ruling. The Leader of the Opposition told the Mail that the Prime Minister - who has now dropped his belief that transgender women are women - should say sorry to those who lost jobs or were harassed in the row over equality law. In Parliament she also urged him to apologise to MP Rosie Duffield who was hounded out of Labour after she spoke up for female-only spaces - and told him to crack down on the trans activists who defaced Westminster statues in angry protests against the landmark judgment. Her comments came after Sir Keir belatedly spoke out on the declaration by Britain's top court that the legal definition of a woman should be based on biological sex, saying: 'A woman is an adult female, and the court has made that absolutely clear.' He declined to repeat his previous statement that 'trans women are women' but his official spokesman later confirmed he no longer believes it.
