PITTSFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A large fire was put out at a homeless shelter in Pittsfield Wednesday night.

The Pittsfield Fire Department states that at 7:59 p.m. on Wednesday, crews were sent to 360 West Housatonic Street, Soldier On, for a reported building fire. When crews arrived, a large, open-air shed was fully on fire. The fire was put out within 30 minutes.
The main Soldier On building nearby was damaged on the roof and some of the windows. The cause of the fire was determined to be a lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery-powered E-Bike. The bike was found charging when it started a 'thermal runaway' of one or more Li-ion fuel cells. The fire then spread to the entire shed. No injuries were reported.
Lithium-ion batteries can be found in many household items such as cell phones, laptops and tablets, watches, e-bikes, vape devices, electric vehicles, power tools, and many children's toys.
These types of batteries are known for melting, catching fire, and even exploding sometimes. Lithium-ion batteries power everything from smartphones and laptops to scooters and electric vehicles, and they pack a lot of power into a small device. These products should be unplugged after they are finished charging to prevent a fire or explosion.
To properly dispose of lithium-ion batteries, they can be brought to a household hazardous waste collection site or a battery recycling center such as Staples, Home Depot, and Lowe's. To find a location near you, visit Call2Recycle.org.
Purchase and use devices that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL)
Always follow the manufacturer's instructions
Only use the battery and charging cord that is designed for the device
Do not charge a device under your pillow, on your bed, or a couch
Plug the charger directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or extension cord
Do not keep charging the device or device battery after it is fully charged
Keep batteries at room temperature when possible
Do not charge them at temperatures below 32°F (0°C) or above 105°F (40°C).
Do not leave them in a hot car, in direct sunlight, or freezing temperatures
Store batteries away from anything that can catch fire
Store scooters and e-bikes outdoors if possible. If you must store them indoors, keep them away from doors, windows, and stairways
Have working smoke alarms and a home escape plan that includes two ways out

New Jersey woman frustrated as attacker who shattered her knee in mask confrontation gets probation

A New Jersey woman says her life was forever changed after she was assaulted back in 2020, but last week, her attacker averted jail time. The assault happened after a dispute over face masks, the victim told CBS News New York's Jennifer Bisram in her first sit-down TV interview. Margot Kagan, a 59-year-old mother of two, says she is a cancer survivor who had a life-saving liver transplant back in 2020. "I was weak. I mean, I had almost 200 stitches," she said. She was still recovering and walking with a cane when she visited a Staples store in Hackensack in late July 2020. "I was actually trying to fax something so my daughter can get into college," Kagan said. At the time, face masks were mandatory indoors, but Kagan said another customer, Terri Thomas, was wearing hers below her chin. "And I said, 'You should really be wearing a mask.' And rage, rage, she had so much rage," Kagan said. Surveillance video shows Kagan pointing her cane at Thomas, then putting it back on the ground. Thomas then lunges at Kagan, grabs her by the wrist and throws her to the ground. Thomas then walks away. Additional video shows Kagan struggling on the ground while Thomas walks past her, even stepping over Kagan's leg at one point. "My knee was shattered, and my tibia started to split vertically," Kagan said. Thomas, who was 25 years old at the time, was arrested. "The thing that she did wrong was not breaking my knee. It was putting her hands on me," Kagan said. According to the Bergen County prosecutor's office, Thomas pled guilty to third-degree aggravated assault, which carries a sentence up of to five years in prison. Five years later, however, a judge sentenced Thomas to three years of probation. "I get hurt. I get assaulted. Nothing happens to my attacker except probation," Kagan said. Kagan said she used to run five miles every day, but now, every step is a battle. "I can barely walk a lap," she said. She said she now spends most of her time at her New Jersey home. "Basically I was in my room in my bed for three months. I served time. I'll be serving time the rest of my life," Kagan said. CBS News New York reached out to Thomas' attorney for comment through the county's public defender's office and have not heard back.

Travis Decker Manhunt: Police Share New Evidence in Daughters' Murders

Originally appeared on E! Online Authorities are sharing more information surrounding Travis Decker's case. Over two months after the bodies of his and ex-wife Whitney Decker's daughters Paityn, 9, Evelyn, 8, and Olivia, 5, were discovered at a campground in Leavenworth, Wash., police have linked the patriarch's DNA to the plastic bags used to kill the girls, whose causes of death were determined to be suffocation, per the autopsies completed by the Medical Examiner. 'Two of the victims each had two separate bags over their heads and the third victim had three separate bags over their head,' the Chelan County Sheriff's Office said in an Aug. 19 press release shared to Facebook. 'In addition, several cable ties were located on the ground in the immediate area of the bodies. These plastic bags and cable ties were collected that night by the Washington State Patrol Crime Response Team.' After sending this evidence for DNA analysis, authorities said that they believe Travis—who is wanted on first-degree charges of murder and kidnapping—is the 'only suspect involved in committing these homicides.' 'DNA profiles matching Paityn, Evelyn and Olivia Decker were also located on the plastic bags. No other DNA profiles were obtained from the plastic bags.' Regarding the cable ties found at the scene, the police department added, 'One DNA profile was obtained from the cable ties collected at the scene. That DNA sample matched the profile for Travis Decker. No other DNA profiles were obtained from the cable ties.' The sheriff's office, who has previously described Travis, 32, as "well versed in wilderness survival and capable of spending days or even weeks in the wilderness on his own and with very little equipment,' also confirmed that their search efforts for the army veteran continue. 'Decker's whereabouts remain unknown,' the statement concluded. 'At this time, we do not have any evidence to suggest Travis Decker is either alive or deceased.'
