I refer to 'How Hong Kong firms are weeding out 'perfect' job candidates in age of AI' (
June 22 ).
I visited Japan twice over the past two months, making one trip to Osaka and another to the remote island of Miyakojima. Having to use Google Translate gave me food for thought on the need to learn languages.
During both visits, when I used English to order food or check into hotels, locals often struggled to understand me until I used Google Translate. The app has indeed improved life for tourists by helping us conveniently overcome language barriers.
However, whenever I wasn't connected to the internet or something took ages to type in Google Translate, I began to wonder if technology could entirely erase the need to learn languages. The answer, if you ask me, is no.
Technology is merely a tool when communication breaks down. The most effective way to interact with other people is to speak their language. It not only shows respect for the local culture but also ensures one's survival in the age of generative artificial intelligence (AI).

Apple supplier Foxconn partners with industrial motor maker Teco to build AI data centres
The move underscores Foxconn's efforts to expand beyond its traditional role as Apple 's main iPhone assembler, as it taps opportunities in the artificial intelligence infrastructure market, from supplying AI server racks to data centre businesses. Under the deal, Foxconn will hold a 10 per cent stake in Teco, which will hold about 0.519 per cent of Foxconn, the firms said. Alibaba, Zhipu roll out new AI models amid heated open-source race
Alibaba Group Holding and Zhipu AI have launched new open-source models as China's rivalry with the US in artificial intelligence heats up. On Tuesday, Alibaba released Wan2.2, which it claimed was the industry's 'first open-source large video generation models incorporating the Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture'. Alibaba owns the South China Morning Post. MoE is a machine-learning approach that divides an AI model into separate sub-networks, or experts – each focused on a subset of the input data – to jointly perform a task. It enables models to be pre-trained with far less computing power. The Wan2.2 series features a text-to-video model Wan2.2-T2V-A14B, an image-to-video model Wan2.2-I2V-A14B, and Wan2.2-TI2V-5B, a hybrid model that supports both text-to-video and image-to-video generation tasks. The new models, which include GLM-4.5 with 355 billion parameters and a more streamlined GLM-4.5-Air with 106 billion parameters, were built on a fully self-developed architecture, according to the company. GLM-4.5 was China's 'most advanced open-source MoE model', as it secured third place globally and first place among both domestic and open-source models based on the average score across '12 representative benchmarks', Zhipu said on Monday.
