Momentum mutual funds are leading mkt recovery, could give huge gains now: Should you rush to invest?

Time of India19-05-2025

After struggling during the market downturn, the momentum strategy—chasing recent winners—is back on top. Funds tracking momentum indices are capitalising on the current market recovery. But should investors jump on the bandwagon, or is it too soon to ride this rally?
From peaks to crashes
In recent years, investors betting on momentum have seen the whole gamut of outcomes. The 'buy high, sell higher' mantra initially caught investors' fancy amid the near-uninterrupted market uptick post the March 2020 outbreak of Covid-19. Momentum stole the limelight in 2021 with a 75.8% return, outperforming all other
investing
styles and trouncing the Nifty 500 index (16.5%). After slipping up briefly in 2022 (-9.3%), momentum roared back into form in 2023 (46%) and 2024 (25.6%), emerging among the charttoppers and leaving the Nifty 500 index (25.2% and 15%) trailing in its wake.
But towards the end of 2024, investors discovered that momentum is no free lunch. With the market cracking under the weight of steep valuations, tepid earnings growth and trade wars, momentum investors were in for a shock. The Nifty200 Momentum 30 index slipped 31% from 26 September 2024 to 7 April 2025. Comparatively, Nifty 500 lost 18%. Karthik Kumar, Fund Manager at
Axis Mutual Fund
, remarks, 'Momentum has exhibited volatility it hadn't seen for quite some time. Whenever a sudden shift in the market occurs, momentum typically takes time to reflect the newer realities, and exhibits a lag in such periods.' Many momentum portfolios were skewed towards value stocks just as the market turned, leading to sharp underperformance.
Momentum strategies have gained sharply amid market recovery
After underperforming over six months, momentum is regaining ground.
But the tide has turned again. With the stock market rebounding smartly, the momentum trade is soaring high. Since 7 April 2025, the Nifty200 Momentum 30 index has gained 11% even as the Nifty 500 index gained 7.8%. Arihant Bardia, CIO, Valtrust, observes, 'Momentum investors have now seen a complete cycle. Many who got in previously on sharp outperformance have now also seen it lag the market.'
Live Events
Coming out of the storm
So what does momentum have in store for investors now? Some experts reckon the time is ripe for momentum to kick into higher gear. Bardia asserts, 'Momentum typically starts outperforming when the market recovers from a sharp drawdown and breaches previous highs.' He reckons the drawdown is behind us and the market is on recovery path. The frontline BSE Sensex index is now only 4% off its previous peak of 85,978 even as the BSE Midcap and BSE Smallcap indices are still 12% and 15.8% shy of their respective highs—but gaining ground quickly.
Historical evidence supports momentum strategies at such junctures. However, betting on continued upswing in momentum on this evidence alone may backfire also, warn experts. 'Momentum will do well if market trends evolve gradually. But sharp changes in trends will lead to higher churn in winning stocks, which could temper returns,' cautions Kumar. To be sure, the market fog has seemingly dissipated in recent weeks. The ceasefire between India and Pakistan, the cooldown in US-China trade animosity and the imminent Ukraine-Russia peace talks provide a solid platform for further market upside. However, other surprises may yet derail the fragile recovery.
Tackling the beast
Experts maintain that investors should avoid timing their pursuit of momentum. The idea behind momentum investing is not to try and catch the top or the bottom of the market or a stock, but to simply ride an established trend. Investors must simply let momentum do what it does best. Any good momentum strategy adapts to the evolving market realities, latching on to the winners and letting go of the losers.
'The transition happens with a lag, but momentum is adept at changing its form in a way that reflects the market's current preferences,' insists Kumar. While momentum can cut deep amid a market correction, it is proven to deliver superior outcomes over longer periods of time. Bardia observes, 'Momentum tends to exhibit higher volatility but the risk-adjusted return over longer periods tends to be much higher. The outcomes typically compensate for the higher risk taken.' He suggests investing in a staggered manner and staying committed to the chosen momentum strategy for threefive years to make the most of its capabilities.
Kumar points out that risk in momentum strategies is equivalent to any small cap offering, and so should be pursued through the lens of asset allocation. Such factor-based funds should form part of the satellite portfolio, not the core.
Further, active momentum strategies may prove better at containing downside risk. Typically, momentum is a fast moving signal that requires deft portfolio manoeuvring. Index-driven
momentum funds
are slow to react as these embrace longer look-back periods (for price trends) and slower portfolio rebalancing. Actively run momentum strategies, on the other hand, capture both near-term and long-term price trends and rebalance more frequently. This enables quicker transitions, reduces the signal decay and cushions the downside better.

NBCC defends bulk sale of new Amrapali flats to private builders

NOIDA : Facing protests from Amrapali homebuyers, National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) has defended its decision to sell new flats in bulk to private developers, saying it was a "last resort" to raise funds for completing stalled housing projects. The state-run construction company's move has sparked outrage among homebuyers who alleged that on one hand, their long-awaited flats were being cancelled in the name of delayed payments, while on the other, new flats with additional FAR were being handed over to private developers at "discounted" rates. NBCC chairperson and managing director KP Mahadevaswamy , however, maintained that the decision was necessary given the severe financial constraints. "We tried retail sales first, but they didn't work. Bulk sale was our final option to raise funds quickly without burdening existing buyers," Mahadevaswamy told TOI. When NBCC took charge of Amrapali projects, it inherited the responsibility of completing 38,000 flats for around 46,000 buyers. The company needed Rs 100 crore a month but was receiving only half that amount. Initial estimates suggested a total fund requirement of Rs 10,000 crore, prompting NBCC to award 24 construction contracts worth Rs 8,200 crore. The Covid pandemic, however, disrupted these plans. Payments from buyers slowed dramatically, contractors threatened to abandon projects, and labour payments were delayed. Despite securing loans from the SWAMIH Fund and a banking consortium led by Bank of Baroda, NBCC's financial challenges persisted. "Around 8,000 buyers had stopped payments. In 2021, the Supreme Court ordered us to give them 15 days to make payments, after which we could cancel the flats and sell them. We sent emails, issued letters, and advertised their names as defaulters. But many still did not respond. However, over time, this number reduced to about 2,000. Now that property values have gone up, they are protesting," Mahadevaswamy said. However, with an objective to complete all units, NBCC purchased additional floor area ratio (FAR), from 2.75 to 3.5, to sell them to developers. Initially, the company tried to sell new units to be built on their own, but failed to get a good response. It was the Supreme Court and court receiver committee that asked NBCC to purchase additional FAR. Currently, around Rs 893 crore has been paid to Noida and Greater Noida Authority out of a total of Rs 936 crore for purchasable FAR. In terms of land area, the total development related to the purchasable FAR allows 82 acres in six projects. This prompted the move to sell flats in bulk. The strategy has so far resulted in the sale of 3,237 flats across four projects — Aspire Centurion Park, Aspire Dream Valley, Aspire Leisure Park, and Aspire Silicon City. These sales are expected to generate Rs 6,480 crore, with Rs 648 crore already received from developers. Developers including Gaursons, Happy Valley Infra, and AU Real Estate Services won bids in these projects. NBCC emphasised that these companies were merely sellers, with all construction remaining under its supervision. Homebuyers, however, alleged foul play in the decision. "People waited over a decade and invested their life's savings. Now, their flats are being cancelled, but bulk flats are sold to new investors," said Abhishek Kumar, president of Noida Extension Flat Owners' Welfare Association (NEFOWA). Kumar challenged NBCC's notification process for defaulters, claiming many buyers never received proper communication about payment deadlines. Almost 3,000 buyers whose flats were cancelled are planning legal action. "They say they published defaulters' names in newspapers. But not everyone saw those ads. Some emails to the receiver's office bounced as well," he added. NBCC insisted that the bulk sale process was transparent and court-monitored, with the prices of flats set after consulting international property consultants. "All payments will go directly to the court receiver's account — not of the developers," Mahadevaswamy said. He added that NBCC had clearly instructed developers not to mislead buyers or make exaggerated claims. "If they do, we will take action," he said. The company said it also implemented measures to prevent monopoly by limiting developers to two project packages each. The developers must pay 100% of the reserve price regardless of their ability to resell the flats. A construction-linked payment plan is in place, requiring 10% payment upfront and the remainder over three to five years. "These builders are only sellers, the construction is solely with us. Everything is being monitored by the Supreme Court. Our sole objective is to complete these stalled flats and deliver them to people who have waited far too long," Mahadevaswamy said. Gaursons chairperson and MD Manoj Gaur claimed many of these protesters were not even genuine buyers. "These are people whose flats were cancelled for non-payment. They failed to prove their bonafide," he added.

Sensex dips 800 pts, Nifty below 24,600 as latest tariff hikes jolt markets

Why stock markets fell today: Indian benchmark indices plunged after the opening bells, taking cues from a decline in their Asian peers amid fresh tariffs from the US. The BSE Sensex index plunged 796 points or 0.98 per cent in the intraday trade to hit a low of 80,654 during the day. The NSE Nifty50 fell 224 points, or 0.91 per cent, to 24,526. The indices registered their worst fall since May 27 this year. The broader market indices continued to outperform the benchmarks. The Nifty MidCap was 0.08 per cent up while the Nifty SmallCap index was 0.01 per cent lower, respectively. Except for Nifty Realty, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and PSU Banks, all sectors were trading lower on Monday, led by information technology (IT) and metal. Furthermore, the market breadth remained skewed in favour of sellers. About 1,336 stocks rose, 1,779 declined, while 187 remained unchanged on the BSE. The market structure favours the continuation of the ongoing consolidation phase and global headwinds like renewed tariff concerns that will restrain a breakout rally, according to VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments. Key reasons behind the Sensex, Nifty fall today: Asian markets decline: Most equity benchmarks in Asia traded lower on Monday as trade tensions flared up over the weekend, with US President Donald Trump announcing additional tariffs on steel and aluminium to 50 per cent from 25 per cent. Later, the European Commission said on Saturday that Europe was prepared to retaliate against President Donald Trump's plan to double tariffs on imported steel and aluminium. In Asia, Japan's Nikkei was down 1.5 per cent while Hang Seng plunged over 2 per cent on Monday. All major equity benchmarks were in red with South Korea and Australia's index down 0.5 per cent. S&P 500 futures eased 0.2 per cent and Nasdaq futures lost 0.3 per cent. President Trump's 50 per cent tariffs on steel and aluminium are a clear message that the tariff and trade scenario will continue to be uncertain and turbulent, Vijayakumar said, impacting markets on Monday. Stock market volatility continues as China has now accused the US of violating its recent trade deal and stated that it will take measures to defend its interests. However, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he's confident the latest trade clash between Trump and Xi Jinping 'will be ironed out' in a call shortly. IT, Metal stocks plunge: The losses in the domestic markets were led by IT and metal stocks as the latest trade tensions keep investors on edge. The tech stocks fell on Monday as tariff threats continue to weigh on the US economy. The gauge for tech stocks -- Nifty IT -- fell as much as 1.5 per cent during the session, with Mphasis, Persistent Systems and HCL Technologies leading the decline. Meanwhile, in the metal space, Welspun Corp, Vedanta and JSW Steel were among the top losers as Trump's steel and aluminium will become June 4, Wednesday. The Nifty Metal index was the top sectoral loser, falling as much as 1.6 per cent on Monday. Shares of Tata Steel, Hindalco and NMDC were trading with a loss of nearly 1 per cent. Key levels to watch: If the market breaches the 24,650 level, it could shift sentiment, leading to a retest of levels around 24,450, according to Shrikant Chouhan, head of equity research at Kotak Securities. However, a break of 24,450 could trigger the market may fall to 23,900 levels, Chouhan said, adding that the strategy should be to design a trading strategy with minimal stop losses.
