Air India Express flight aborts journey to Phuket: Snag reported at 10,000 feet; alternate aircraft flown

Time of India20-07-2025
HYDERABAD: An Air India Express flight bound for Phuket, Thailand, returned to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) here less than half an hour after take-off due to a technical snag.
The aircraft was carrying more than 100 people, including passengers and the crew.
The Boeing aircraft, operating as IX 110, had already experienced a 20-minute delay at the airport. Originally scheduled for a 6.20 am departure, the flight took off at 6.40 am but returned by 6.57 am.

The aircraft had reached an altitude between 5,000 and 10,000 feet when the crew identified the snag, necessitating an immediate return.
GMR authorities told TOI that Air India arranged for an alternative flight for the passengers which reached Phuket at 11.45 am.
'Safety of flyers our top priority'
Airport officials added that after take-off, the pilots noticed the technical issue at 6.49 am. "The crew elected to return out of an abundance of caution. An alternative aircraft was arranged, and the flight has since departed.
We regret the inconvenience caused and reiterate that safety remains our top priority in every aspect of our operations," said an Air India Express spokesperson.
A month ago, a Tirupati-bound flight from Hyderabad had faced a similar situation. On June 19, a SpiceJet aircraft carrying 80 passengers had returned 10 minutes after departure due to intermittent illumination of baggage door light.

Air India to fully resume International operations from 1 October? Here's what CEO Campbell Wilson says

Air India is set to fully resume its International operations by 1 October 2025, according to a recent statement from the company's CEO and MD, Campbell Wilson. The announcement comes after the Tata-owned airline initiated a 'safety pause' in the wake of the AI171 crash in June, which killed all but one out of the 242 passengers on board, causing a temporary reduction in flight schedule. In an email addressed to Maharaja Club members, Wilson detailed the measures the airline has taken to reinforce its safety protocols. He confirmed that a full resumption of the operations is targeted for 1 October of this year. 'We have begun a phased restoration of international operations from August 1, 2025, with full resumption targeted for October 1, 2025,' he said in a statement, adding that 'this measured approach ensures we complete every verification thoroughly and resume service with complete confidence.' Acknowledging some operational challenges over the last few weeks, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said the airline is committed to strengthening its internal processes to minimise the inconvenience that such circumstances cause to passengers. On 18 June, Air India said that it would reduce its international services on widebody aircraft by 15 per cent for a few weeks as part of a broader effort to stabilise operations and prioritise safety after the fatal Ahmedabad crash on 12 June 2025, Mint reported earlier. The crash happened after a Boeing 787 Dreamliner of Air India that was headed for London from Ahmedabad, crashed within seconds of lift-off and fell on a medical college hostel. 'This decision has been taken to ensure stability of our operations, improve efficiency, and minimise inconvenience to passengers,' the airline said in a statement on 18 June 2025. Passengers affected by the reduced flight schedule were offered alternative travel options, including rebooking at no additional cost or a full refund.

Air India's International Flights To Be Fully Operational From October 1

Last Updated: Air India will resume international operations from October 1, 2025, after halting flights due to the Ahmedabad tragedy. Air India will resume international operations from October 1. The Tata-owned airline halted international flights in the wake of the Ahmedabad plane tragedy on June 12. Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said that the airline has already begun a phased restoration of international operations from August 1. 'We have begun a phased restoration of international operations from August 1, 2025, with full resumption targeted for October 1, 2025. This measured approach ensures we complete every verification thoroughly and resume service with complete confidence. I acknowledge that there have been some operational challenges over the last few weeks that may have impacted your travel experience. Rest assured, we take this seriously and we are committed to strengthening our internal processes to minimise the inconvenience that such circumstances cause to you," he said. The Tata Group airline had decided to observe a 'Safety Pause" in the aftermath of the Boeing 787-8 plane crash. The airline had said that the pause enabled it to perform additional precautionary checks on its Boeing 787 aircraft as well as accommodate longer flying times arising from airspace closures over Pakistan and the Middle East. Air India has cancelled and delayed several flights due to technical issues with aircraft in the past few weeks. The airline cancelled its flight from Delhi to Milan due to a technical snag detected in the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft prior to departure. June 12 Plane Crash On June 12, the London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner began to lose thrust within seconds of taking off from the Ahmedabad Airport and ploughed into a medical college hostel, killing all but one of the 242 onboard and another 19 on the ground in the deadliest aviation accident in a decade. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Air India's Campbell Wilson assures flyers of safety, eyes full return of international ops by October 1

Air India CEO Campbell Wilson has reaffirmed the airline's unwavering commitment to passenger safety, announcing that international operations will be fully restored by October 1, 2025. The phased resumption of services began on August 1, following a voluntary 'Safety Pause' introduced in June after the AI171 accident. In a communication to Maharaja Club members, Wilson said the airline has conducted comprehensive inspections across its Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 fleet under the supervision of India's aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). No issues were found in the inspections. He also confirmed that additional checks on fuel control switch mechanisms of Boeing 737 and 787-8 aircraft were conducted, yielding similar results. The airline used the downtime to fast-track aircraft reliability upgrades and improve delay management processes. All Air India aircraft undergo multi-layered safety checks before take-off, and the airline's Integrated Operations Control Centre monitors every flight in real time. Crew and engineering teams train regularly at the Air India Training Academy, adhering to the latest global safety procedures. Live Events Wilson also highlighted that Air India operates under a Safety Management System that meets DGCA and ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) standards. The airline undergoes annual DGCA audits and a bi-annual IATA Operational Safety Audit by external experts. He said the DGCA recently described Air India's audit findings as 'entirely normal' for an airline of its size. Since privatisation, Air India has appointed global aviation consultancy Oliver Wyman/CAVOK to conduct a full safety assessment and engaged Boeing for an Operational Efficacy Program, aiming to modernise internal systems further. Wilson acknowledged operational disruptions in recent weeks and assured passengers that corrective measures are being taken. He added that the airline's fleet retrofit programme is on track to enhance onboard experience. 'So, whenever you choose to fly with Air India, know that your trust is valued and your journey safeguarded by our entire Air India family,' Wilson said.
