On the film's 20th anniversary, here's a warm hearted anecdote shared by the director himself. Talking about onboarding the two megastars Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar for his film, Vipul Amrutlal Shah said, 'While we were making Aankhen, I had discussed about a play which was written and directed by Aatish Kapadia, with Amit sir (Bachchan) and Akshay (Kumar). They both loved the story and we decided to make this film'.
Waqt: The Race Against Time marked the second collaboration of the talented director with the likes of Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar. Their first collaboration 'Aankhen' was received very well by the critics and the audiences. The trust Vipul Shah had instilled in the megastars by delivering such a brilliant film made both the megastars very keen on collaborating again.
Talking about the graciousness and support the director received from the both the stars when he told them that he was turning a producer, Vipul Shah revealed, 'When I informed Amitji and Akshay about me turning producer with this film, both of them were willing to waive off their fees but me and my partner Mr Manmohan Shetty did not agree to it and paid them their remuneration but the fact that such big superstars stood by me and were even willing to waive off their fees, was a very touching and heartwarming gesture'.

The fact that both the actors, within a split second decided to waive off their fees speaks volumes of the trust they had in Vipul's direction and the bond they share. ‘Mere paas janta hai': How Bollywood and Hindi are powering Mira Nair's son Zohran Mamdani's run for NYC mayor
Zohran Mamdani, a New York State Assembly member and Democratic mayoral candidate, has turned to Bollywood to fire up his campaign for the city's mayoral race, and is doing it using the lingua franca of those of South Asian descent – Hinglish. In a video posted on social media, Mamdani—who could become the first South Asian mayor of New York City—invokes the cinematic legacy of Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Kishore Kumar to challenge front-runner Andrew Cuomo, in a campaign message that feels more like a film trailer than a typical political ad. It is quite fitting as he is the son of acclaimed Indian filmmaker Mira Nair, who has directed internationally acclaimed films such as Monsoon Wedding and The Namesake. The background music is Deewanagi Deewangi from the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Om Shanti Om. The video opens with a scene from Deewar (1975), where Amitabh Bachchan, playing the hardened Vijay, faces off with his idealistic brother Ravi (Shashi Kapoor). In the original, Vijay boasts: 'Aaj mere paas buildingein hain, property hai, bangla hai, bank balance hai, gaadi hai. Tumhare paas kya hai? ('Today I have buildings, property, a bungalow, a bank balance, and a car. What do you have?' The video cuts before Shashi Kapoor can reply. Instead, Mamdani appears on screen, arms stretched wide in Shah Rukh Khan's signature pose—his answer: 'Main paas janta hai' (I have the people). His campaign weaves Bollywood nostalgia into political messaging. The iconic scene from Amitabh Bachchan's Deewar, a symbol of class conflict and moral divide in Hindi cinema, is reimagined for American politics for his immigrant voter base. And the SRK pose—made famous in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and repeated across his filmography, makes him instantly relatable. Billionaires ke paas already sab kuchh hai. Ab, aapka time aageya. Billionaires already have everything. Now, your time has come. — Zohran Kwame Mamdani (@ZohranKMamdani) June 4, 2025 Using Kishore Kumar's voice from the film Karz (1980), Mamdani introduces the idea of ranked-choice voting with a clever twist: 'Hey, have you ever voted for anyone? Have you ever ranked anyone?'—a playful but pointed question to New York's multilingual electorate. He also uses the beloved summer beverage, lassi (buttermilk), to explain rank-based voting. Urging the electorate not to vote for Cuomo, whom he marks as his primary adversary, he uses the lyrics: 'Khana milega pina milega bhaiya ki shadi hai sab kuch milega' to subtly send home the message that while Donald Trump-backed candidate may offer freebees, real change will be elusive. This is followed by the line: 'Billionaires already have everything. Now your time has come.' In yet another nod to classic Hindi cinema, Mamdani invokes the phrase 'Roti, Kapda aur Makaan', the title of the 1974 Manoj Kumar film, to drive home the election plank of basic affordability, a key theme of his campaign. The video presents a stark contrast between Mamdani's populist pitch and Cuomo's elite image. Though Mamdani is speaking to New Yorkers, the language, music, and imagery are unmistakably Indian. After all, his target electorate comprises South Asian immigrants, first-generation voters, and working-class communities who might not see themselves in typical political campaigns. The election will take place on June 24.

Housefull 5 review: Cringe and chaos in this mystery of who killed comedy
In 'Housefull 5', a comedy-thriller, a whodunnit, things get messy and confused almost immediately. Everything is happening on a cruise, but you are the one feeling like jumping off the boat, just to escape the understand 'Housefull 5', you first have to understand that this is not the most acclaimed world of comedy. Since this is the world where no woman was likely involved in the writing, women are merely on board for their glossy bodies, and to make the men in the franchise look smarter than they are. Sexually explicit references masquerade as jokes, and self-deprecating humour is limited to name-swapping and men pretending they have full control of the story begins and ends on a luxury cruise owned by Ranjeet's Ranjit. Before succumbing to a heart attack on the day of his 100th birthday, he leaves 69 billion pounds worth of wealth to his first son, Jolly. Except that nobody knows who Jolly is or what he looks like. Julius (Akshay Kumar), Jalabuddin (Riteish Deshmukh) and Jalbhushan (Abhishek A Bachchan) all claim to be the real Jolly, and then begins the hunt - for the killer on the ship, and for the real Jolly. The board of directors, the captain of the ship and Ranjit's attorney are all in the picture - ready to be framed for an unexpected murder on the cruise. Things have to be sorted soon, because the killer is one among good thing about 'Housefull 5' is that it looks like a nice commercial entertaining package. But, it's not for everyone's taste. The cringe comedy, where creepy men are lusting over women's bodies and making jokes out of beating birds and monkeys, does not make for very heartening humour. It also feels artificial at one point, as if the audience is being forced to throw a chuckle here and biggest problem with 'Housefull 5' is that the audiences have evolved enough to understand what is genuinely funny. With access to world cinema, we have come to appreciate that the best kind of humour often comes from everyday situations - from something which is rooted in reality, not drowned in glitter. A murder mystery-comedy overloaded with glamour and gloss loses its edge when its sparkle becomes a efforts as a slapstick comedian are visible, and yet you miss what you once loved about him in 'Welcome' or 'Singh is Kinng'. He owns 'Housefull 5', and tries his best to hold together a 12-member cast performing on a Abhishek Bachchan and Riteish Deshmukh add well to the madness, but the real villain here is the lack of good humour - the actual killer of the joy that a full-blown comedy entertainer on the big screen is meant to deliver. There are no real jokes in 'Housefull 5'. Everything is just a rehashed version of a situation, or a character we've already seen in the previous 'Housefull' real comedian, though - Johny Lever - is hardly offered anything to do. The brilliant performer, who has ruled the Bollywood comedy space since the '90s, is reduced to a frame filler. And guess who's relied upon for laughs? Sanjay Dutt, Nana Patekar, and Jackie Shroff in their brief 5' is not even a family-friendly film, with its '6 and 9' jokes, and a long scene focussing on nothing but the glistening frames of the three leading ladies - Jacqueline Fernandez, Sonam Bajwa and Nargis Fakhri. Soundarya Sharma, making her big-screen debut, is reduced to a cardboard cutout meant purely to satisfy the male gaze. 'Housefull 5' makes you truly believe in the lack of female gaze in mainstream cinema. If this is the class of our comedy, perhaps we would be better off not laughing at all. If this is what they want our children to watch, let's go back to the time when children weren't even allowed to watch TV, let alone a film in theatres. And if this is what Bollywood calls a 'blockbuster comedy', then maybe, just maybe, the real joke is on us.
