Sarawak strengthens myKP to empower inland fishing communities

MIRI (May 22): The Sarawak Fisheries Department will continue the implementation of the myKomuniti Perikanan (myKP) Programme, reaffirming its commitment to empower inland fishing communities and promote sustainable fisheries management.
According to Sarawak Senior Director of Fisheries Abdul Rahman Abdul Wahab, the myKP initiative plays a key role in enhancing fishers' skills and resilience, raising awareness about resource conservation, and contributing to national food security.
Launched on Dec 4, 2017, myKP is a flagship programme under the Department of Fisheries Malaysia aimed at improving income-generating capacity through community-based fisheries management (CBFM).
Abdul Rahman shared this during the launch of the Kuala Sibuti myKP Strengthening Programme here yesterday.
Since its inception in Kuala Sibuti in 2020, he noted the community has successfully carried out four key projects – the Fish Aggregating Device (Unjam) Project, the Fishery Product Processing Project, the Boat Maintenance Shed (Galangan) Project, and the Belacan Processing Project.
To support these initiatives, he said the department allocated RM239,985 for the period 2020 to 2025.
These projects not only strengthen the local fisheries economy but also reflect the government's commitment to inclusive and sustainable community development, he said.
The programme, he added, covered a broad range of activities including capture fisheries, aquaculture, agro-based enterprises, fisheries support services, agro-tourism, and recreational fishing.
'This demonstrates that fishing communities are being left behind, but are empowered to drive local economic development through self-reliance, organisation, and adaptability.

Over RM1.5 million in PHEKS 2025 aid approved for 114 Southern Zone applications
JOHOR BAHRU: A total of RM1.5 million has been approved for 114 applications from the Southern Zone under the 2025 Trade Union Affairs Programme (PHEKS), said Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad. He said the amount marked a significant increase from the RM674,000 disbursed for 85 applications in the same zone in 2024, reflecting the growing participation in the ministry's empowerment programmes. 'For the Southern Zone, which covers Johor, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan, 195 applications amounting to over RM3 million have been received so far,' he added. 'Out of the total, 114 applications have been approved, involving an allocation of RM1,505,462,' he told reporters after officiating the Southern Zone PHEKS 2025 Assistance presentation ceremony here today. Also present were JHEKS director-general Mohd Asri Abdul Wahab, Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (CUEPACS) deputy president II Azman Shah Abdul Rahman, and Union Network International-Malaysian Liaison Council (UNI-MLC) president Datuk Mohammed Shafie BP Mammal. Abdul Rahman said Johor received the highest allocation, amounting to RM703,565 for 61 applications, followed by Negeri Sembilan with RM441,900 for 32 applications, and Melaka with RM359,998 for 21 applications. He also emphasised that the annual allocation to trade unions under the PHEKS programme has steadily increased over the past three years, underscoring the government's ongoing commitment to strengthening the role of unions as strategic partners in the national labour ecosystem. 'In 2023, the government allocated RM2.6 million. This increased to RM5.8 million in 2024, and for this year, RM10 million has been set aside to empower trade unions nationwide. 'We hope this figure will continue to grow, surpassing RM10 million in 2026,' he said. At the same event, Abdul Rahman also presented assistance to union representatives and officiated the launch of two research publications on trade unions titled 'The Role of Trade Unions in Combating Forced Labour Issue in Malaysia' and 'SSPA: Heading to a More Secure Retirement'. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA), in a statement, disclosed that trade union membership in Malaysia has now surpassed 1 million, with 1,038,435 registered members across 762 unions as of 2024.

5,000 youth entrepreneurs to benefit

NABAWAN: The Chief Minister's Outreach Programme with non-governmental organisation (NGO) and young entrepreneurs is expected to benefit some 5,000 youth entrepreneurs by the end of June. Chief Minister's Department's Government and People Cooperation Institute (Ikrar) Director Azrul Ibrahim said since its launch in 2022, some 4,100 young entrepreneurs had received RM500 each in start-up capital to help kick-start or expand their small businesses. He said the programme was inspired by the Chief Minister's vision to ensure that the majority of young entrepreneurs operating small-scale businesses in rural and suburban areas receive support and assistance from the State Government. 'As of now 4,100 entrepreneurs, including in Nabawan, have received the aid, and we are targeting 5,000 recipients by the end of June,' he said when met during the Chief Minister's Outreach Programme with NGOs and Young Entrepreneurs at the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) on Monday. Also present were Nabawan Community Development Leader Deckson Andipai, Gagasan Rakyat Nabawan Youth Chief Ag Azuan Pg Hamzah and local community leaders.
