Sound and Vision
This is podcasting in 2025: Many of the most popular shows are now video conversations that seem to stretch on forever. They often feature major political figures and may even have played a role in electing Donald Trump to his second term. The sheer profusion of these talk shows poses a very basic question: Who, exactly, is watching all this?
I put that question to podcast creators and viewers, industry analysts and executives. And the answer, it turns out, is complicated. In today's newsletter, I'll explain what I learned.
Who's watching
One thing we do know: A lot of people are hitting play on podcast videos. YouTube announced recently that more than a billion people a month watch podcasts on its platform. And according to the most recent survey research, around three-quarters of podcast consumers play podcast videos.
What makes it complicated, though, is that we don't know whether everyone playing these videos is actually watching them. The same survey showed that more than 40 percent of people who play podcast videos on YouTube listen to them only in the background — say, while folding laundry or doing other work.
Podcasting began as an audio-only format, which led to an extraordinary degree of intimacy between listeners and hosts. Hearing the same people in your ears week after week tends to do that. Video podcasts strive for the same, or an even greater, sense of intimacy with their audience. One superfan of 'This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von' told me that she liked to watch the entire podcast because it made her feel less alone and as if she had company over. (Von's show, which regularly draws hundreds of thousands of viewers on YouTube, typically runs for about two hours.)

The 'contrasting journeys' that defined 2025 HOF inductees
Yahoo Sports senior MLB analyst Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman look at highlights from 2025 Hall of Fame induction weekend in Cooperstown. Hear the full conversation on the 'Baseball Bar-B-Cast' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript This class was so good, and of course this is true every year, the contrast of the journeys and styles and careers of all the people going in together, it is really cool that they just kind of, by circumstance and the nature of the process, end up going in together and will associate them together. And I think this class in particular, it will endure in that way. Any other just highlights from those speeches that you wanted to shout out? To have Parker and Sabathia together was very interesting. Kind of these two titans of black baseball from two completely different eras. And when you hear the way that people talk about them, it sounds similar, right? The players that looked up to Dave Parker at the end of his career, that he played with Eric Davis, Barry Larkin, Gary Sheffield, saying that to have that guy there was important to me. And then you had CI talking about how for him, watching baseball and seeing black players that looked like him, how that was important. And now CI is that for kind of the next generation in a lot of ways, and it was just cool to have those two stories being told up on the same podium at the same time. Um, and of course the Ichiro speech, I mean, just an all-time, just an all-timer. The shade to Miami was incredible, incredible. Let's be real, obviously Ichiro would have heard of the Marlins at that point. That was a joke. It's a great joke, and then Billy Wagner, who is so important to us as D3 dorks, Division 3 baseball, to see D3 on the plaque in bronze. Honestly, that was one of the parts where he got the most emotional, uh, when he was like, you know, the fact that, um, you know, someone that's 5' nothing who played Division 3 baseball in the middle of nowhere could be a Hall of Famer is really special to him. One of my favorite stats of all time, one of my favorite fun facts, the top 3 K/9 seasons in NCAA history, they are all three of Billy Wagner's seasons. He was dominant in a way that no one has ever been at that level. Uh, and congratulations to him. Congratulations to all of the inductees. Close

When your poolside snack is interrupted by a surprise guest (and no one knows who's more startled)
In a now-viral TikTok with over 14.6 million views, mom @ellamcconkey the reality of traveling with young kids. It's the reminder every parent needs before their next trip—because no matter how well you plan, something hilarious (or chaotic) is always around the corner. The video starts off peaceful: a toddler, fresh from a swim, quietly enjoying her fries—until a lizard scurries into frame. Neither saw it coming. The video's caption reads, 'God forbid a girl tries to eat her french fries in peace on vaca,' and the text overlay drives it home: 'Lunch by the pool is fun until it's not.' The little girl's split-second reaction—an honest mix of confusion, fear, and restraint—has viewers both laughing and impressed: 'They were both scared ,' wrote @Laririri. 'The lizard: where's the ketchup,' joked @Amanda Franchi. And @amy bloom nailed the vibe: Because traveling with kids never goes exactly to plan Whether you're road-tripping with a baby or wrangling toddlers through TSA, every parent knows: the memories you make on vacation aren't always the ones you planned. Sometimes they show up in the form of a a diaper blowout just as the plane starts to a beloved stuffed animal accidentally left behind at the last hotel. The moments that stick often aren't on the itinerary. They're the tiny plot twists that turn into stories your family tells for years. Related: Toddler gives viral crumpet order—and mom's calm response wins the internet The tiny surprises that shape kids (and parents) Emotional resilience often begins in small, unexpected situations, like a sudden burst of fear met with reassurance or a surprise encounter at the lunch table. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), moments like these help children build the confidence and coping skills they'll rely on as they grow. How adults respond matters too. A calm presence, a quick laugh, or a reassuring hug can help kids feel safe enough to move through the moment. Even retelling the story later, when everyone is dry and eating fries again, can turn a brief disruption into a shared memory. Related: Toddler picks up mom's nickname for dad… and won't stop using it The memories you don't plan, but never forget You might forget the timeline, the meltdown in the rental car lot, or why you ever thought a museum was a good idea. But someone will remember the fries. Someone will remember the chaos. And someone will definitely remember the toddler who just wanted to eat in peace, and got a side of drama instead. Because when you're traveling with kids, the best stories tend to sneak up on you—messy, hilarious, and completely the wildest thing that's happened on a family trip?
