Kyiv hit by deadly Russian missile and drone attack

Saudi Gazette24-04-2025

LONDON — At least nine people have been killed and 60 injured, including children, in an overnight Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine's capital Kyiv, local officials say.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko says falling drone wreckage triggered a number of fires, and there are fears that a number of people may be trapped under the rubble of a destroyed residential building.
Blasts were also reported in the north-eastern city of Kharkiv, which also came under attack. At least two people were injured, the mayor said.
This comes just hours after US President Donald Trump accused Volodymyr Zelensky of harming peace negotiations, after the Ukrainian president ruled out recognizing Russian control of Crimea.
Ukraine has repeatedly stated that it will not give up Crimea, a southern peninsula illegally annexed by Russia in 2014.
Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and Moscow currently control about 20% of Ukrainian territory.
Ukraine's state emergencies ministry DSNS and the interior ministry said that nine people were killed in Kyiv in the overnight Russian attack.
In a post on social media, Mayor Klitschko wrote that six children and a pregnant woman were among those injured.
"Fires broke out in six locations," he said, adding that there "people are under the rubble" of a destroyed residential building.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said that "phone calls can be heard from the wreckage".
He also said that two children were reported missing.
Rescuer teams with sniffer dogs were seen combing through the wreckage as they searched for survivors.
The worst-hit was the western Svyatoshynskyi district of the capital, Klitschko said.
Footage has emerged on social media purportedly showing missiles hitting Kyiv, triggering huge blazes.
In Kharkiv, about 40km (25 miles) from the Russian border, two people were injured, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said.
He said "private houses" were damaged in the overnight Russian missile and drone attack.
Ukraine's air force warned that virtually all the country's regions were under the threat of air strikes.
The Russian military has not commented on the reported attacks.
In a post on social media, the Russian defense ministry said that 87 Ukrainian drones had been either destroyed or intercepted overnight over several Russian regions. — BBC

Trump Hints at US Involvement in Iran-Israel Conflict

President Donald Trump has indicated that the United States might engage in the escalating Iran-Israel conflict. During an interview with ABC News, he expressed openness to Russian President Vladimir Putin acting as a mediator. This statement comes as tensions rise in the Middle East, with both nations exchanging heavy aerial assaults. Ongoing Nuclear Talks and Potential Mediation According to Trump, discussions regarding Iran's nuclear program continue. He noted that Tehran appears eager to negotiate a deal, especially following recent military exchanges with Israel. 'It's possible we could get involved,' Trump stated during an off-camera interview with ABC News senior political correspondent Rachel Scott. He emphasized that the United States is 'not at this moment' participating in military actions. Trump confirmed that Putin is prepared to mediate the conflict. 'He is ready. He called me about it. We had a long talk about it,' Trump explained. This potential mediation could play a crucial role in de-escalating tensions between the two nations. Escalating Violence and Diplomatic Efforts On Sunday, Israel and Iran engaged in heavy aerial assaults for the third consecutive day. Casualties have increased significantly as Israel launched large-scale attacks targeting Iran's nuclear and military infrastructure. These actions have prompted retaliatory strikes from Iran, further complicating the situation. Oman, which has previously mediated discussions on the nuclear issue, announced the cancellation of a sixth round of talks between Iran and the United States. Despite this setback, Trump reassured that discussions between the two sides are ongoing. 'No, there's no deadline' on negotiations, he stated when asked about a time limit for Tehran to engage. Trump emphasized that both parties are actively communicating. 'They'd like to make a deal. They're talking. They continue to talk,' he remarked. He suggested that the recent clashes between Israel and Iran might have accelerated the urgency for a nuclear agreement. 'It may have forced a deal to go quicker, actually,' Trump concluded. As the situation develops, the international community watches closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the Iran-Israel conflict. Short link : Post Views: 1

Russia is Ready to Help De-escalate Tensions in Middle East: Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the latest tensions between Israel and Iran during a phone call with his Iranian Counterpart Abbas Araghchi on Saturday, according to Al-Arabiya. Lavrov stressed Russia's condemnation of Israel's use of force against Iran and its strikes on Tehran's nuclear projects. He also expressed Moscow's readiness to help de-escalate the situation in the Middle East. Russia is prepared to continue to work to resolve issues surrounding Iran's nuclear program, according to a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry. Moreover, Lavrov sent his condolences to Araghchi for the Iranians killed in the strikes. On June 13, Israel launched a wave of airstrikes on Iran under the name of Operation Rising Lion. The military campaign targeted Iran's nuclear facilities and killed top military commanders and nuclear scientists. As a response, Iran launched a retaliatory wave of missiles against Israel and targeted Tel Aviv. US and Iranian officials were set to hold a sixth round of talks on Tehran's escalating uranium enrichment program in Oman on Sunday. However, the talks seemed to be deadlocked. On Thursday, Trump raised the possibility of an Israeli strike on Iran stating that it 'could very well happen.' At the same time, he stressed his hopes for a peaceful resolution. 'My entire Administration has been directed to negotiate with Iran,' he posted on social media around 5 p.m. Eastern time. 'They could be a Great Country, but they first must completely give up hopes of obtaining a Nuclear Weapon.'
