Former Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan has made his pick for the winner of IPL 2025 and it's not his ex-team Punjab Kings (PBKS). Just a day before the all-important Qualifier 2 between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings, Dhawan openly backed MI to lift the trophy this season.
Dhawan snubs former team Punjab Kings
Speaking to India Today, Dhawan said he has been enjoying this year's IPL and is impressed with how MI have played in the tournament. He praised their strong comeback and called them a 'very balanced' side. MI started IPL 2025 with four losses in the first five matches but then won six on the trot to bounce back strongly.
'This time, the IPL has been very exciting. For the finals, my support will be with Mumbai Indians. The Mumbai Indians team is playing really well — they are very balanced. The way they've gained momentum is outstanding, and they are a very strong and well-balanced team. So, I'm with Mumbai Indians,' Dhawan said on Saturday.
STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD
Dhawan has been a vital part of the PBKS squad in the past, having captained the side for two seasons from 2022 to 2024. However, PBKS did not achieve the desired results under his captaincy and eventually decided to part ways with the cricketer. PBKS appointed Ricky Ponting as head coach and Shreyas Iyer as captain for IPL 2025 and managed to finish the league stage at the top of the table.
Can Punjab Kings break the jinx this year?
However, PBKS suffered a heavy loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Qualifier 1 and are now set to face MI in Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. MI, on the other hand, will be high on confidence as they convincingly defeated the Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator on Friday.
Punjab Kings are eyeing their maiden IPL trophy under the leadership of Iyer and Ponting, while Mumbai Indians are looking to secure a record-breaking sixth trophy. MI hold a slight edge over PBKS when it comes to the head-to-head record, with 17 wins against 15. The winner of this match will face RCB in the final on 3 June.

Ponting believes Test snub is inspiring Iyer to perform
Mumbai, June 2 (UNI) Ricky Ponting believes in-form Shreyas Iyer is determined to prove national selectors wrong and guide Punjab Kings to their first Indian Premier League title. Iyer was a notable absentee when India named their 18-player squad for their upcoming five-match Test tour of England, and the in-form right-hander has responded well by scoring runs and leading the Kings into the IPL final against Royal Challengers Bangalore. If the Kings manage to win, this will be their maiden IPL title. ICC Hall of Famer and Punjab Kings head coach Ponting discussed Iyer's absence from India's Test squad on The ICC Review last week and the Australian great said the in-form middle-order batter had moved on quickly from the disappointment to try and focus on helping the Kings create history in the IPL. "I actually was gutted…but he's accepted that really well and he's moved on," Ponting said on The ICC Review of Iyer, prior to the IPL Playoffs commencing. "He's just got that real hunger in his eyes to do well every time that he plays for us here and wants to win games of cricket and wants to evolve and develop into the best leader and captain that he can be." Iyer was one of India's best performers during their run to the finals in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, and was the side's leading run-scorer at the ICC Champions Trophy event at the start of this year. He has also scored plenty of runs recently against the red ball at the first-class level in India, and Ponting thought that strong form would have seen Iyer win a recall to the Test side. "Certain other players that have been picked in that (Test) squad have done it on the back of good first-class cricket and good IPL seasons leading up to that selection and Shreyas has done absolutely everything the same as some of those other players," Ponting noted. "So I was disappointed that he didn't get picked as I actually felt that he would get picked. But he didn't. And I think that probably makes him a little bit hungrier for us when these playoff games come around." Ponting's working relationship with Iyer is not a new partnership, with the pair having combined previously at the Delhi Capitals and having helped the side into the playoffs from 2019 to 2021, and an appearance in the final in 2020. The duo get the chance to go one better this year against Royal Challengers Bangalore, with Iyer's match-winning innings of 87 not out from just 41 deliveries against the Mumbai Indians on Sunday helping the Kings earn their place in the final in what is Ponting's first year as coach of the franchise. Iyer scored 243 runs from five innings at India's successful Champions Trophy earlier this year and has tallied 603 runs for the Kings from 16 innings at the IPL this year to be sixth overall on the leading run-scorer charts. "I enjoy playing a bit of a role with him as we work really well together," Ponting said. "We talk a lot together about the game and tactics and, I think he said last night that he said 'that I leave it to Ricky to look after the tactical stuff and pick the players, and then he hands it over to me and I go and execute it out on the field'. "And that's the way we've worked, this year and it's been nice to get that sort of working relationship back together again," Ponting added. UNI BM

IPL 2025 Final: Reliving RCB's record-breaking run to the summit clash
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have earned a spot in the IPL 2025 final after a commanding victory over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Qualifier 1. Led by captain Rajat Patidar, RCB defeated the table-toppers by eight wickets, marking their fourth appearance in an IPL final—and the first since 2016. Focused and Fired Up: RCB's Journey to the Final RCB's Director of Cricket, Mo Bobat, praised the team's fearless and united approach this season. "The players have responded to challenges with courage, composure, and intent," he said. 'It's been a long road, but the final is the goal that truly matters.' Former skipper Virat Kohli has had a phenomenal season, amassing over 600 runs with eight fifties—the most by any batter this year. Impressively, every time Kohli has hit a half-century in a run chase, RCB has emerged victorious. This marks the fifth season in which Kohli has crossed the 600-run mark. But the team hasn't relied on just one player. Nine other batters have scored half-centuries this season, with strong performances from Tim David, Devdutt Padikkal, Phil Salt, Jitesh Sharma, and Patidar himself. Bowling Brilliance RCB's bowling unit has also been crucial. Josh Hazlewood leads with 21 wickets, supported by Krunal Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar with 15 each. Suyash Sharma has added eight wickets to his tally, while contributions from Lungi Ngidi, Romario Shepherd, and Liam Livingstone have strengthened the attack. Record-Breaking Season for RCB RCB became the first franchise to win all of their away games in the league stage. Their dominant performance includes several significant milestones: First-ever league double over CSK, including a historic win at Chepauk First win at Wankhede Stadium in a decade, defeating Mumbai Indians Ended a six-year losing streak at Eden Gardens against KKR Beat Delhi Capitals in New Delhi for the first time in seven years Recorded the second-highest chase of the season against LSG, chasing 228 with ease Individual Achievements Fuel Success RCB's journey has also seen numerous individual records. Their victory over PBKS in Qualifier 1 was the biggest win in playoff history, by 60 balls. Jitesh Sharma's 85* off 33 balls against LSG is the highest IPL score by a No. 6 or lower batter. The 107-run partnership between Jitesh and Mayank Agarwal is RCB's best for the 5th wicket or lower in a chase. Phil Salt became the third-fastest player to reach 1000 IPL runs, doing so in just 576 balls RCB's Road to the Final Match 1 – KKR vs RCB – RCB win by 7 wickets Match 2 – CSK vs RCB – RCB win by 50 runs Match 3 - RCB vs GT – GT won by 8 wickets Match 4 – MI vs RCB – RCB won by 12 runs Match 5 – RCB vs DC – DC won by 6 wickets Match 6 – RR vs RCB – RCB won by 9 wickets Match 7 – RCB vs PBKS – PBKS won by 5 wickets Match 8 – PBKS vs RCB – RCB won by 7 wickets Match 9 – RCB vs RR – RCB won by 11 runs Match 10 – DC vs RCB – RCB won by 6 wickets Match 11 – RCB vs CSK – RCB won by 2 runs Match 12 – RCB vs KKR – washed out Match 13 – RCB vs SRH – SRH won by 42 runs Match 14 – LSG vs RCB – RCB won by 6 wickets Qualifier 1 – PBKS vs RCB – RCB won by 8 wickets
