Tower Club champions, Ali Talib second in Muscat Academy karate
MUSCAT: Third Muscat Academy Open Karate Championship concluded at the Al Amal Sports Club Hall in Bausher on May 2.
The closing ceremony was held under the auspices of Shaikh Salem bin Hamad al Mahrouqi, Chairman of the Oman Karate Committee and Member of the Shura Council representing the Wilayat of Adam. Also in attendance was Mohammed bin Hamdan al Badi, President of the Arab Open University, along with a large audience of attendees, parents and karate enthusiasts.
The championship witnessed the participation of over 200 male and female athletes representing 19 clubs, academies and centres from Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Iran. The competitors showcased their skills in a highly spirited environment through kata (imaginary combat) and kumite (free fighting) events, categorised by age groups and weight classes.
In General Championship results, Qatar's Tower Club emerged champions as Ali Talib Al Raisi Club of Oman claimed the runners-up trophy. Qatar's Al Fuhoud Sports Academy finished third while Muscat International Karate-do Academy took the fourth spot.
The closing ceremony was marked by a festive atmosphere, during which the guest of honour awarded medals to the winners and honoured the participating clubs, as well as the referees and organising committees. A commemorative shield was presented to the guest of honour by the Championship Director, Shihan Ali bin Mohammed al Raisi, who expressed his satisfaction with the technical and organisational level of the event.
Shihan Ali al Raisi said the championship was exceptional in terms of competitive intensity and diversity of participants. He said: 'We witnessed passionate matchups and a high technical level that reflects the development of karate in the region. I extend my deep thanks to His Excellency Sheikh Salem bin Hamad al Mahrouqi for his generous patronage, to Mr Mohammed al Badi for his support and presence, and to everyone who contributed to the success of this championship – from organisers, referees, coaches, players, to parents. This success is the result of teamwork.'

National Debating Championship launched in Oman
Muscat – The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, in collaboration with the Oman Debate Centre, has launched the eighth edition of the National Debating Championship, aimed at strengthening public speaking and critical thinking among the youth. The championship seeks to equip young people with skills in persuasion and critical thinking, while encouraging healthy competition and promoting the ethics of dialogue. It also aims to highlight debates as a key educational tool that enhances teaching methods and helps students analyse social issues through logical reasoning. Organisers hope it will prepare a generation capable of engaging responsibly with local and global challenges. Preliminary training sessions will begin on Monday, covering fundamentals such as debating basics, argument construction, rebuttals, and case analysis. Participants will also learn techniques for structured presentations. This year's edition features a revised format for the qualifying rounds, divided into three regional stages. The first will take place at the Arab Open University in Muscat on April 11 and will include teams from Muscat, Dakhliyah, South Batinah, North Sharqiyah and South Sharqiyah. The second round will be hosted by the University of Buraimi on April 18, featuring teams from North Batinah, Dhahirah, Buraimi and Musandam. The third stage will be held at Dhofar University on April 21, involving teams from Al Wusta and Dhofar. School-level qualifiers will be conducted virtually to select finalists. Hilal bin Saif al Siyabi, Director General of Youth at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, said the championship is one of the ministry's flagship events aimed at developing young people's skills in public speaking and expression. 'Year after year, we see progress in the quality of participation and the growing reach of the competition. This shows the importance of the initiative in preparing a generation capable of engaging in dialogue with logic and objectivity,' he said. Nasser bin Humaid al Hinai, CEO of the Oman Debate Centre, added that the tournament is part of an effort to foster leadership among youth through structured discussion. 'We aim to build a generation capable of contributing to society through objective dialogue. In addition to official matches, participants will benefit from intensive training sessions,' he said. The championship will see over 272 debaters from 68 teams compete, including 28 teams from cultural and sports clubs and 40 representing educational institutions. The finalists will go on to compete for the national title and the opportunity to represent Oman in international championships.

400 athletes compete in 10th shotokan karate championship
Muscat: The 10th Shotokan Karate Centre Open Championship kicked off in Muscat on Friday. The event is organised under the umbrella of the Oman Karate Committee and sponsored by the Muscat Nights festival 2025. It is being held at the main hall of Al Amal Sports Club in the Ghala area of the Wilayat of Bausher, with extensive participation from local and international karate champions. The opening ceremony was held under the auspices of Talal bin Said al Mamari, CEO of Omantel, and in the presence of Salim al Mahrouqi, Member of Majlis Ash'shura representing the Wilayat of Adam and Chairman of the Oman Karate Committee. This year's edition is distinguished by the participation of over 400 male and female athletes from nine Arab and foreign countries: Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Iran, Nepal, Egypt and Algeria. These athletes represent 34 sports clubs and compete across various age categories. The championship spans two days. The first day is dedicated to competitions for age groups 8 to 10 years, while players aged 11 and above compete on the second day in an enthusiastic and highly competitive atmosphere. The championship also features the participation of 40 teams in group kata (demonstration combat) and group kumite (free combat), conducted in a team format where three players face off against three players in each round, adding an exciting competitive edge to the tournament. For the first time, two teams comprising individuals with Down syndrome and people with disabilities participated in the championship. This humanitarian gesture aims to promote inclusivity and provide opportunities for everyone to engage in sports activities. The opening ceremony included impressive karate demonstrations by several participating athletes. SAFWAN CLAIMS TOP SPOT On the first day of the championship, Safwan al Zakwani secured first place in the boys' 10-year-old category, followed by Rishanth Maruthi in second place, while Azri Tsunil and Srihari shared third place. In the girls' 8-year-old category, Noya GK claimed first place, with Al Yamamah al Rawahi finishing second. In the Down syndrome category, Abdullah al Hinai took first place, Zayed al Jabri came in second, and Ammar al Mamari and Abdullah al Ghafri jointly placed third. In the disability category, Maktoum al Muqbali secured first place, while Said al Masoudi took second place. Abdullah al Muqbali and Said al Shaidi shared third place. Hilal al Abdali, Secretary of the Shotokan Karate Centre and Head of the Championship's Media Committee, expressed his pride in organising this distinguished edition of the championship. He praised the high level of organisation and broad participation, emphasising that the championship aims to develop karate in the Sultanate of Oman and refine players' skills. Al Abdali added that this championship provides Omani and resident referees with a valuable opportunity to apply the knowledge gained from arbitration courses in real competitions. These championships significantly contribute to honing the skills of Omani youth and discovering new talents that could become key assets for the national karate team in the future. "This championship is part of ongoing efforts to support Omani sports, provide a competitive platform for players to develop their skills and reinforce Oman's position as a capable host for major sports events."
