The opening ceremony of the new branch was attended by Mr. Salah Al-Fulaij, CEO of NBK-Kuwait, Prof. Moudi A. Al-Humoud, the Founding Administrative Board, Chair of Abdullah Al-Salem University in Kuwait, and Mr. Mohammed Al-Othman, CEO, Consumer & Digital Banking Group at NBK, along with a number of officials from both the bank and the university.
On this occasion, Mr. Mohammed Al-Wazzan, Head of Sales Force, Consumer and Digital Banking Group at NBK, emphasized that, as part of its social responsibility towards educational institutions, the youth community, and Kuwaiti civil society, NBK offers innovative banking services and products tailored to meet students' financial needs. He highlighted that the branch is equipped with state-of-the-art banking technologies and devices, ensuring that university students enjoy a seamless and comprehensive banking experience.
He highlighted that the opening of the Abdullah Al-Salem University branch aligns with the bank's ongoing commitment to enhancing the banking experience for customers across all segments of society. This initiative is part of NBK's broader strategy to strengthen its leadership in the banking sector by expanding its branch network, introducing innovative banking solutions, and launching services that enable customers to complete their transactions seamlessly and efficiently, ensuring their convenience.

Surge in hiring in Saudi Arabia, despite slower regional non-oil business growth
The rate of hiring in Saudi Arabia rose sharply in July in response to strong domestic demand, despite slower non-oil business activity growth in the region's biggest economies. The Riyad Bank Purchasing Managers Index report dropped to 56.3 in July, from 57.2 in June, but remained well above the 50 mark that separates growth from contraction in the non-oil private sector. However, the rate of business activity growth eased to its lowest since January 2022. "Saudi Arabia's non-oil economy remained on a solid growth track in July, supported by higher output, new business and continued job creation," said Naif Al-Ghaith, chief economist at Riyad Bank. The latest survey showed a historically steep rise in employment at the Arab world's second-biggest economy, as companies responded to higher activity and new orders by hiring more staff in July, the report said on Tuesday. This followed June's fastest uplift in job numbers over the past 14 years. Increased hiring was driven partly by a rise in backlogs of work, as some businesses found existing contract work and constrained capacity held up the completion of new orders, the report said. "Employment conditions are expected to stay supportive, helping firms manage future workloads," Mr Al-Ghaith said. However, input cost pressures continued as wages and purchasing prices continued to rise, prompting companies to raise selling prices, particularly in services, construction and manufacturing, he added. The International Monetary Fund estimated Saudi Arabia's economy will expand at a 3.6 per cent pace in 2025 and 3.9 per cent in 2026, supported by the continued phase-out of Opec production cuts. The kingdom is expected to keep its non-oil growth above 3.5 per cent over the medium term, which mirrors the positive effects led by its Vision 2030 economic programme, the Washington-based lender said. In July, non-oil companies' output grew on the back of existing projects and incoming new orders that helped to sustain growth, according to qualitative survey reports. However, output growth eased to its lowest rate in three and half years due to higher competition and lower customer footfall, the survey said. Orders also grew, driven by domestic demand and increased efforts by sales teams to fulfil orders. However, companies faced difficulties in attracting new foreign clients, leading to a decrease in new export orders for the first time in nine months. Cost pressures eased slightly in July, despite steep rises in labour costs. Salary expenses rose sharply, underlined by efforts to retain workers and offer bonuses. Looking ahead, expectations for future business activity in July "softened notably" from June's two-year high, although in general businesses expect output to increase due to "resilient market conditions" and strong client demand, the report said. Overall optimism was the lowest recorded since July 2024. UAE growth Meanwhile in the UAE, non-oil business conditions grew at their weakest level since June 2021 as geopolitical tension weighed on sales, according to S&P. The seasonally adjusted S&P Global UAE Purchasing Managers' Index dropped to 52.9 in July, from 53.5 in June, the report on Tuesday said. "New order volumes helped firms to expand, but this trend is declining, with the latest data indicating the softest rise in incoming new work in almost four years," said David Owen, senior economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence. Companies partly attributed this slowdown to the Israel-Iran tension that flared in June, which made some clients hesitant to spend. They also highlighted weaker tourism activity and headwinds from global trade disruption. Firms blamed more crowded markets for the increasing difficulty in securing new orders. "Should regional tensions ease, we may see a recovery in sales growth in the coming months," Mr Owen said. "Nevertheless, the ongoing trends of rising competition, limited inventory, constrained hiring growth and relatively low confidence among surveyed firms suggest that downside risks remain elevated.' Despite the demand slowdown, companies received higher new orders in July compared to the previous month but the upturn was the least amount recorded since August 2021. July data showed softening of job growth at non-oil companies in the UAE. Employment rose slightly, marking the weakest uplift in four months, coinciding with a steeper rise in backlog orders. In Dubai, the business and tourism hub of the Middle East, the non-oil sector showed a solid recovery, with its PMI rising to 53.5 in July from 51.8 in June, driven by a sharper improvement in sales volumes. The outlook Looking ahead, UAE non-oil companies remained optimistic in July, driven by hopes of strengthening demand levels. However, the degree of confidence eased slightly, as some companies highlighted risks stemming from global economic uncertainty and heightened competition. In Egypt, non-oil business conditions deteriorated for the fifth consecutive month in July, but the decline was less severe than in June. This was because companies reported softer contractions in activity and new orders, while employment increased for the first time in nine months, according to the S&P Global Egypt PMI report. The headline PMI rose to 49.5 in July from 48.8 in June, remaining below the 50 mark. The outlook for business remained at a historically subdued level in July, as companies continued to express concerns about demand strength and broader economic uncertainty, the report said. Optimism in July improved only slightly from June's record low.

Kuwait environmental sustainability constitutes developmental strategic pillar, effective partnerships
KUWAIT - Kuwait is prioritizing environmental concerns as a pivotal and strategic pillar within its national plans and future programs. Over the past two years, the government has intensified its efforts to adopt strategies for environmental sustainability, guided by the directives of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. The Cabinet has played a key role in advancing the national vision for environmental sustainability, regularly placing the long-term low-carbon development roadmap at the forefront of its agenda. In this context, Oil Minister Tareq Al-Roumi and officials from the Environment Public Authority (EPA) presented a visual outline of the roadmap in July. This plan aims to enhance resilience against climate change by employing integrated, innovative, and technical solutions within a circular carbon economy, and it also includes supportive initiatives for environmental innovation and green investment across multiple sectors. Kuwait has strengthened coordination with China to activate memoranda of understanding (MoU) in key areas, such as low-carbon green systems for waste recycling, electrical infrastructure, renewable energy, and the environmental development of sewage treatment facilities. These agreements serve as key components in translating the country's ambitious goals into tangible steps toward a sustainable future aligned with Kuwait Vision 2035. A central aim is to preserve the environment for future generations. In parallel, Kuwait's 2050 Low-Carbon Strategy, launched by the EPA in November 2023 in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme and other state sectors, underscores its commitment to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Kuwait became the second Gulf country to present such a strategy. The country is targeting carbon neutrality by 2060, with a focus on diversifying energy revenue, increasing renewable energy use, replacing fossil fuels with natural gas, and utilizing waste to support environmental sustainability. The first State of the Environment Report, issued by the EPA last year, marks a major milestone in assessing environmental conditions and exemplifies successful cooperation among governmental agencies. Prepared in collaboration with the UN, the report focuses on seven key areas: climate change, waste management, water resources, biodiversity, marine and coastal environments, and more. The EPA's efforts have led to the launch of four strategic projects focused on environmental protection, sustainable development, waste management, and combating desertification. These initiatives aim to improve performance indicators and foster public-private partnerships in environmental preservation. Urban planning efforts, such as Kuwait's Fourth Structural Plan (2040 Master Plan), promote green buildings and healthier living environments. On the legislative side, Kuwait's environmental protection law includes policies aimed at conserving natural resources and ecosystems. These measures are designed to prevent or reduce air pollution, ensure biodiversity, and promote sustainable living conditions. The law mandates the identification and regulation of fixed pollution sources and enforces penalties for environmental violations. During the recent Sustainable Energy Conference, Kuwait reaffirmed its commitment to achieving a balanced energy mix, aiming for 50 percent of its electricity to come from renewable sources by 2025. In his speech, Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy and Acting Minister of Finance and Minister of State for Economic and Investment Affairs, Sabeeh Al-Mukhaizeem, emphasized the adoption of comprehensive plans and ambitious projects that align with Kuwait's global commitments and its vision for a sustainable future. Kuwait's renewable energy strategy involves three tracks: long-term projects like the Shagaya Renewable Energy Park, short-term solutions, and smaller-scale initiatives requiring all facilities to generate 10 percent of their electricity from renewable sources. The Shagaya project, a public-private partnership, is being developed in two phases: the first will generate 1,100 MW, and the second 500 MW. The Public Authority of Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources is also advancing initiatives to expand green cover across the country by planting trees and increasing green spaces in parks and along streets. The authority has implemented plans for artificial barriers and redistributed agricultural areas to help control sand dunes, fight desertification, and mitigate pollution. Public parks remain a cornerstone of Kuwait's environmental efforts, offering diverse green spaces across the country. Kuwait has consistently affirmed its commitment to regional and international environmental agreements and has actively collaborated with global organizations in this field. In this context, Sami Dimassi, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) representative and Regional Director for West Asia, praised Kuwait's commitment to developing responsive strategies and action plans that address urgent environmental needs. He highlighted the progress Kuwait has made in promoting environmental initiatives and sustainable development. Ghada Al-Taher, UN Resident Coordinator in Kuwait, lauded the country's active role in environmental sustainability and its participation in initiatives addressing critical issues such as desertification, water scarcity, and biodiversity loss. Kuwait ratified the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 1995 and the Kyoto Protocol in 2005 and has consistently participated in global climate summits. Gulf banks poised for robust loan growth amid rate cut expectations
The Gulf's largest banks are set to experience strong loan growth through the remainder of 2025, driven by anticipated interest rate cuts in line with the US Federal Reserve, according to analysts at S&P Global Ratings. The Fed is expected to implement two rate cuts this year, with the first likely in September. Banks in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE are projected to benefit the most from the easing cycle. As lending activity picked up, net interest income (NII) rose across most major GCC banks in the second quarter, supported by lower regional rates and stronger loan demand. Saudi Arabia's Al Rajhi Banking & Investment Corp led the region with a sharp rise in loan growth, surging to 19.31 per cent from 7.37 per cent a year earlier. Saudi National Bank followed with a year-on-year increase to 12.21 per cent from 10.25 per cent. In the UAE, First Abu Dhabi Bank PJSC saw loan growth accelerate to 10.71 per cent from 6.34 per cent, prompting the lender to upgrade its full-year guidance to low double-digit growth. Emirates NBD Bank PJSC also revised its forecast upward after reporting 14.28 per cent loan growth in Q2. Qatar National Bank QPSC (QNB) posted 9.38 per cent loan growth and raised its guidance to 7 per cent–9 per cent, up from 5 per cent–7 per cent. Nearly half of this growth stemmed from its Turkish operations, according to Durraiz Khan, senior vice president for group financial consolidation. Despite margin pressures from high interest rates in Turkey, QNB's NII rose to $2.34 billion from $2.12 billion a year earlier. Khan noted that net interest margins (NIM) could recover if Turkey proceeds with expected rate cuts in the second half of the year, as deposits in Turkey reprice faster than loans. Emirates NBD, which operates in Turkey via DenizBank AS, saw its Q2 NIM decline by 22 basis points to 3.36 per cent. The bank expects full-year NIM to range between 3.3 per cent and 3.5 per cent, supported by a potential recovery in DenizBank's margins. Its NII rose 6 per cent year over year to $2.28 billion. According to Fitch Ratings, GCC banks with Turkish exposure could see net monetary losses ease if inflation in Turkey continues to cool. Al Rajhi Bank posted the highest NII growth among the sampled banks, up 25 per cent year over year to $1.95 billion. This, along with gains in net financing, investment income, and banking fees, lifted its Q2 net profit to $1.64 billion—a 31 per cent increase. First Abu Dhabi Bank reported a record quarterly profit of $1.50 billion, up 29 per cent from a year earlier. Saudi National Bank and QNB also saw net income rise by 18 per cent and 4 per cent, respectively. Emirates NBD was the only bank in the sample to report a year-on-year profit decline, down 10 per cent, due to a $31 million impairment charge compared to a $374 million reversal in the same period last year. Outlook With monetary easing on the horizon and regional economies maintaining momentum, Gulf banks are well-positioned to capitalise on rising credit demand. Continued rate cuts, particularly in Turkey, could further support margin recovery and profitability for banks with cross-border exposure. As the macroeconomic environment stabilises, the region's top lenders are likely to maintain their growth trajectory, reinforcing their role as key drivers of financial activity across the GCC.
