Madras HC refuses to quash GCC's decision to privatize garbage disposal
Madras high court
on Wednesday refused to quash the resolution passed by Greater Chennai Corporation to privatise garbage disposal.
"Since the service of the workers is not terminated, the question of retrenchment does not arise," Justice K Surender said while disposing of the plea moved by the sanitary workers.
On Aug 13, when the court reserved its order on the plea, the workers submitted that they were willing to call off their agitation and resume work immediately provided the GCC agreed to abide by the decision of the Industrial Disputes Tribunal in the case concerning the outsourcing of garbage disposal.

Refusing to accept the proposal, the GCC submitted that out of the 16 zones, 11 were already privatised. Even for Zones 5 and 6, tenders were floated, and contracts were awarded. Only two more zones remain to be outsourced. The GCC added that the agitating workers were not its staff. They were engaged from self-help groups (SHGs) on contract.
All the workers would be absorbed with a higher pay scale and would receive other benefits too, said the firm that got the contract for garbage disposal, Delhi MSW Solutions Limited (earlier Ramky).

The contractor has now agreed to extend the cutoff date for the workers to join until Aug0 31, its counsel said.
To this, the workers contended that the pay offered by the contractor would not be higher than what they were getting now and would be less than the minimum wage applicable in the state. They would be drawing a daily wage of 196, less than what they were getting now, they added.

1 2 3 4 Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh State Pollution Control Board (APSPCB) on Wednesday conducted a public hearing for environmental clearance to the proposed 1,200MW Kalai-II hydroelectric project in Anjaw district, being developed by THDC India Limited. With an investment of nearly Rs 14,000 crore, Kalai-II is expected to generate free power worth Rs 318 crore annually after commissioning, while contributing Rs 2.2 crore every year to the Local Area Development Fund. Govt asks depts to prepare plan for Viksit UP 2047
1 2 Lucknow: The plan for Viksit UP-2047, which coincides with the idea of Viksit Bharat by the centenary year of India's independence, has gathered momentum after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath shared a detailed proposal in the monsoon session of the UP Assembly last week. All departments have been directed to frame their plan of action, and a vision document will be prepared within the next 4-6 months. The plan will focus on 12 sectors, each encompassing various departments. Short-term goals, looking at developments within the next five years, and medium and long-term goals have been identified, and the planning department has been deputed to lead implementation and ensure coordination among CM had said in the Assembly that UP was already on the path of becoming a USD 1 trillion economy by 2029-30, for which it had set a target of a growth rate of over 20% in the next five years. Haryana identifies 91 bank branches with ‘mule accounts': 26 of them in Gurgaon, 24 in Nuh
Chandigarh: Haryana Police have identified 91 bank branches across the state where suspected "mule accounts" are being operated by cybercriminals for large-scale fraudulent transactions. Of these, 26 branches are in Gurgaon and 24 in Nuh district. Special teams of the cybercrime wing are conducting examinations of the records to ensure negligence or deliberate collusion of bank staff are not facilitating cybercriminals. The teams are scrutinising lapses in KYC compliance, procedural violations in account opening, the role of bank employees, and any signs of negligence. Continuing the drive, raids were conducted in districts of Karnal and Yamunanagar on Wednesday. In Yamunanagar, investigations revealed that a firm having a current account, officially shut down in March 2025, carried out transactions worth Rs 43 lakh. Nationwide, eight complaints were registered against this firm. Another current account was found to be opened on a fake address, and transactions worth Rs 2 crore made in just three months. The account has 33 complaints filed against it across the country.
