Opinion - Embarrassing: CBS journalists advocate against free speech
If you follow the news business at all, you regularly come across the mythology of Walter Cronkite — the voice of the nation. He was a 'giant,' the story goes, who single handedly turned the tide of public sentiment against the war in Vietnam with his coverage. In his day, Cronkite and CBS were trusted and respected.
My, how times have changed. Today, if you want to see BS 'news' now, all you have to do it turn to CBS News.
Cronkite was a liberal, something he eventually admitted near the end of his life. But people knew it at the time. You can't convey news dispassionately and be passionate about the happenings in the news. When he uttered his famous line — 'But it is increasingly clear to this reporter that the only rational way out then will be to negotiate, not as victors, but as an honorable people who lived up to their pledge to defend democracy and did the best they could' — it was a shock. It was the first time a prominent 'journalist,' something separate from a 'commentator' at the time, had openly put his own personal beliefs on display in the course of his coverage.
Those beliefs had always been there, of course, in story-selection and what was and was not reported, but they never owned it in that way. Now, journalism has been reduced to nothing but the sharing of journalists' opinions and crafted narratives.
What has changed most recently is that the left has lost its monopoly on information. Now, it flows freely from everywhere, leaving people to decide for themselves. We still do not have unbiased media, but we have all manner of biased media that empowers audiences to sift through the facts and draw their own conclusions.
The reason the establishment media hated the late, great Rush Limbaugh so much was that he began the process of killing their monopoly. Rush showed the world what was on the cutting room floor — the things liberal media found inconvenient or didn't want the public to see — and he shared it with tens of millions of listeners every day. He paved the way for Fox News, the Drudge Report, X (formerly Twitter) and every conservative outlet bringing eyes to, as Paul Harvey used to say, the rest of the story.
When they whole story became available, the truth was exposed about just how biased the media had always been. Rather than correct course and become the 'unbiased truth-tellers' they'd always pretended to be, most ran headlong to the left. The news as reported by NBC News and MSNBC today is often indistinguishable from a DNC press release.
The chief anchor at ABC News is someone who helped run Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign and served as press secretary for the Democrat. Later, while a journalist at ABC, he participated in weekly phone calls with former President Barack Obama's chief of staff to talk strategy.
Knowing this, and so much more — that CNN and MSNBC basically serve as golden parachutes for Democratic administration officials — it came as no surprise when CBS News dedicated last Sunday to advocacy for canceling the freedom of speech.
It started with 'Face the Nation' host Margaret Brennan embarrassing herself by claiming the Nazis' Holocaust was caused by the freedom of speech. It was shocking in its abject ignorance.
But it got worse. That evening, '60 Minutes' spent most of its show highlighting, in a positive way, German authorities' criminalization of 'hate speech,' which they define in such a nebulous way as to include anything that might upset the sensibilities of any Ivy League sophomore.
During her ride-along with Germany's Thought Police, '60 Minutes' correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi only accidentally wandered close to asking a critical question about their work suppressing non-conforming opinions.
'You're doing all this work,' she said. 'You're launching all these investigations. You're fining people, sometimes putting them in jail. Does it make a difference if it's a worldwide web and there's a lot of hate out there?'
Walter Cronkite would surely regret to know that he served as the tip of the spear for this disgraceful transformation of his former employer and his profession into what it is today. The primary work of CBS, NBC and ABC News is now to spread propaganda and skewed narratives, and to wall off their audiences from differing perspectives and inconvenient facts.
This is why their audiences are dwindling and their organizations are dying — and it cannot happen fast enough.

NYC lawmakers say they were denied access to ICE facility at Federal Plaza
United States Reps. Adriano Espaillat and Nydia Velazquez are condemning U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement's practices in New York City and nationwide. The New York Democratic lawmakers said Sunday they were denied access to the 10th floor at 26 Federal Plaza, where they say the agency is detaining people. They warned that's just one of many concerning actions in the Trump administration's deportation program. Their attempt to get inside the building came after the NYPD clashed with protesters outside the facility on Saturday over recent ICE arrests. Police say 13 people were issued court summonses and nine were arrested and charged. Read more: Trump deploying National Guard to Los Angeles as immigration protests ramp up after citywide ICE operations "Today, ICE violated our rights" Immigration advocates say they have reason to believe that hundreds of immigrants are being held on the 10th floor in inhumane conditions. Espaillat and Velazquez said they attempted to tour the facility after waiting over an hour in the lobby, only to be denied access. They walked out of Federal Plaza frustrated. "Today, ICE violated all of our rights because, as an extension, we are here to defend your rights, the rights of the American people, to have access and oversight to the federal buildings to ensure that everything is done correctly and in accordance to the law. We were denied that right today, a basic civil right, a constitutional right that we as members of Congress are here to uphold," Espaillat said. The two members of Congress said a deputy denied them access to an immigration holding facility. "She said that it's an ICE facility and a sensitive facility," Espaillat said. Lawmakers say they're worried about conditions at Federal Plaza The representatives, along with immigration advocates, condemned recent ICE arrests at immigration hearings. They say advocates captured images which they say shows federal agents taking migrants into custody at court proceedings and ICE check-ins. They added that they're worried about the conditions migrants are facing, following reports of overcrowding, unbearable heat, and people being forced to sleep on the floor. "Traditionally have been detained for by some hours, but not overnight or not today or not three days," Velazquez said. CBS News New York reached out to ICE for a comment and it released a statement, saying, in part, "U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is executing the president's mission of identifying and removing criminal aliens and other individuals who have violated our nation's immigration laws."

Arrest of Union Leader Highlights Link Between Workers' and Immigrants' Rights
The arrest and apparent injury of a prominent California union leader at an immigration protest has drawn condemnation from across the labor movement. David Huerta, the president of the Service Employees International Union of California, was detained by federal agents on Friday while protesting an immigration raid at a work site in downtown Los Angeles. Video of the incident shows Mr. Huerta being knocked down and lying with his head on the curb. He was hospitalized and released on Friday, the union said in a statement, but remained in custody. Federal officials said Mr. Huerta had been deliberately blocking a law enforcement vehicle and had been arrested for interfering with federal officers. He is expected to be arraigned in federal court on Monday. 'I don't care who you are — if you impede federal agents, you will be arrested and prosecuted,' Bill Essayli, the U.S. attorney for the Los Angeles region, wrote in a social media post on Friday. 'No one has the right to assault, obstruct, or interfere with federal authorities carrying out their duties.' The union, however, said Mr. Huerta was arrested while acting as a peaceful 'community observer' at the raids. Union leaders across the country released statements demanding his release, as did prominent Democratic elected officials including Gov. Gavin Newsom of California and Hakeem Jefferies, the House minority leader. 'He was doing what he has always done, and what we do in unions: putting solidarity into practice and defending our fellow workers,' the leaders of the AFL-CIO, the largest federation of U.S. labor unions, said in a statement. Zohran Mamdani ripped for refusing to recognize Israel as Jewish state: ‘Dangerous point of view'
Jewish leaders condemned Democratic socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani Thursday for his repeated refusals to recognize Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state — slamming it as a disqualifying and 'dangerous' point of view. 'It's more than problematic,' said Joseph Potasnik, executive vice president of the New York Board of Rabbis. 'Jews see this as a dividing line. 'There are 22 Arab Muslim states,' Potasnik noted. 'In Mamdani's world, there isn't room for one Jewish state. He doesn't want a Jewish State.' Mamdani, a pro-Palestinian state Assembly member from Queens who has supported the BDS movement to boycott Israel, has repeatedly been dogged by the issue as he campaigns for the Democratic mayoral nomination. During Wednesday night's NBC 4 NY-Politico primary debate, Mamdani hedged and again refused to answer the question. 'I believe Israel has a right to exist,' he said. 'As a Jewish state?' the moderator pressed. 'As a state with equal rights,' Mamdani replied. But when Mamdani was asked to clarify during a Thursday morning interview on Fox 5's 'Good Day New York,' he said he opposes Israel's right to exist — as a Jewish state. 'Because I'm not comfortable supporting any state that has a hierarchy of citizenship on the basis of religion or anything else,' he told anchor Rosanna Scotto. 'In the way we have in this country, equality should be enshrined in every country in the world.' Fellow Queens Assembly member Nily Rozic, who was born in Israel, said, 'He doesn't recognize the Jewish state and its right to exist — a method of dehumanizing the Jewish people and a way to sow unnecessary divisions in society.' She added: 'That's a dangerous point of view for any elected official, let alone one who aspires to be mayor.' Brooklyn Assemblyman Kalman Yeger, who is also Jewish, said that Mamdani's refusal to acknowledge Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state was not all that surprising. 'Not at all shocking that the most prominent antisemite running this year can't bring himself to acknowledge the right of the Jewish state to exist. His hatred for Jews is boundless,' Yeger said. Democratic National Committee delegate from New York Robert Zimmerman, a pro-Israel Jew, said Mamdani's answer on 'Good Day' was chilling. 'Mamdani clearly disrespects the memory of the 6 million Jews lost in the Holocaust and further empowers those who engage in antisemitic rhetoric and violence,' Zimmerman told The Post. Like the Democratic Socialists of America that back him, Mamdani is a staunch foe of Israel and even supports the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against the Jewish state. Jewish civil rights groups such as the Anti-Defamation League said the BDS movement smacks of antisemitism because it seeks to harm the world's only Jewish State. Mamdani is running second in recent primary polls to ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Cuomo on Thursday was endorsed by the Far Rockaway Jewish Alliance, the largest Orthodox Jewish group in Queens — a sign that the more conservative ultra-orthodox Jewish communities will back his candidacy.
