TikTok Star Who Documented Brain Cancer Battle Dies at 19
TikTok creator Anna Grace Phelan died after fighting her stage 4 brain cancer diagnosis for the past nine months, her family announced. She was 19.
'It is with great sadness to announce that our beautiful daughter, Anna Grace Phelan, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,' a Facebook statement from her family read.
Phelan graduated high school in May 2024, and days before starting her freshman year of college, was diagnosed with an inoperable malignant brain tumor, a GoFundMe for her states.
The Georgia native started documenting her medical journey in August of 2024 when she went to the doctor with symptoms, starting with numbness in the left side of her face and right leg for several weeks. A video posted in September updated her followers that a tumor in her brain was cancerous, and she was already stage 4.
On May 14, in one of her last update videos, Phelan said her health had taken a turn for the worse, and her tumor had grown, making her unable to be operated on.
'It would take a miracle to fix me here on Earth, but I'm not giving up yet,' she said.
Her last post was May 15, where she unboxed gifts from Tim Tebow. In the video she had an oxygen tube and moved slowly as she showed her followers the signed copy of his book and a sweatshirt he gifted her.
She is survived by her parents, William 'Buddy' and Nadine Phelan, her younger brother, both sets of her grandparents, among many other extended family members. Her funeral service will be held in Jefferson, Georgia Thursday at Galilee Christian Church, of which she was an involved member.
'So many of you have followed her journey through a difficult battle with cancer and bore witness to her powerful testimony of faith. Thank you for the countless thousands of prayers for healing and peace,' the statement continued. 'May we all rejoice with the assurance that she is in Heaven now, and she has been healed.'

Family says North Texas man was killed by car driven by his best friend
The man who was critically injured in a hit-and-run accident May 30 in west Fort Worth has died, according to his family. Daniel Lester was a beloved brother and father, and his family is 'shattered by grief' at the unexpected loss, his sister Presley Lester said in a GoFundMe. Daniel Lester, 30, died June 1 in the intensive care unit at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office website. He was on life support following the accident, KDFW-TV reported, and his family chose to donate his organs. Officers were called to the hit-and-run crash at the intersection of Clifford Street and Western Trade Drive shortly after 11 p.m. They found Lester, who had been been struck by a car. Thirty-six-year-old David Hall was arrested Saturday and faces a charge of collision involving serious bodily injury, according to court records. Presley Lester told KDFW that Hall and her brother were best friends. Another friend who saw the accident told Daniel Lester's family that a truck narrowly missed hitting Daniel's car. Daniel got out of his car to confront the driver, and Hall was also at the scene. The driver of the truck fled, KDFW reported. Presley Lester said in a public Facebook post Monday that her family believes that Hall hit Daniel by accident, but he still needs to face consequences. 'While it is understandable that he was frightened and shaken, abandoning a 'best friend' in a life-threatening situation is inexcusable, regardless of the potential repercussions,' Presley Lester said in her post. Daniel Lester leaves behind two young sons, according to the GoFundMe. His family is raising money to help with his funeral expenses.

Southern California father in coma while abroad; family desperate to bring him home
A Southern California family is desperate to bring their father home, who remains in a coma after suffering a medical emergency while traveling abroad. Loved ones said Manuel Contreras, 47, a father of three from Victorville, loves traveling and spending time with his family. He recently flew to Cancun, Mexico, to visit a childhood friend. However, during the trip, he initially suffered a small stroke, which was followed by a much larger stroke two days later. He was rushed to the hospital, where he remains in a coma and in critical condition. 'My dad, he's probably the most hardworking, most active person I know,' Manuel's son, Gabriel Contreras, told KTLA's Shelby Nelson. 'He was going to be gone for a week and it was just to spend time with his friend.' Manuel's children were notified of their father's hospitalization on May 30. 'I believe he collapsed and luckily, there was someone there to be of assistance,' Contreras said. 'Once the ambulance came to assist my dad to the hospital, his friend was able to meet him there.' Since then, Manuel's children said they've been met with one heartbreaking challenge after another. Manuel is currently on Medi-Cal in the United States. The hospital in Mexico that could properly treat his condition would not accept his insurance, so he was transferred to a general hospital instead. 'At the general hospital, they don't have the adequate funding or equipment to treat him there, so they're just putting him into an induced coma and hoping his body heals,' said Ralene Contreras, Manuel's daughter. His family is now desperately working to bring him back to the U.S. to receive proper medical care, but the cost of transporting him from overseas is extremely high and beyond what they could ever afford. 'Flying him to Houston will cost about $30,000 to get him just into the States to get treated,' Ralene said. Loved ones have set up a GoFundMe page in hopes of raising money to bring Manuel back. They've also contacted their local congressman, Jay Obernolte, and the U.S. embassy for help, but said they've received no response. In addition to the stroke, loved ones said Manuel is also suffering from a respiratory infection. With time running out, his children said they are trying to stay hopeful that their father could recover, but are also desperate to bring him back home. 'He's always by his phone because just in case his kids call, he always wants to be the first one there to help them,' Ralene said tearfully. 'I feel helpless knowing that if I call his phone, he's not going to answer.' 'We don't want to think about the worst,' Gabriel said. 'We want to think about the best possible outcome. TikTok blocks #SkinnyTok due to extreme weight loss, disordered eating content
TikTok says it has blocked search results for the hashtag "SkinnyTok"due to a high volume of content that was promoting disordered eating and unhealthy weight loss behaviours on the social media platform. "We regularly review our safety measures to address evolving risks and have blocked search results for #skinnytok since it has become linked to unhealthy weight loss content," said a statement from TikTok emailed to CBC News Wednesday. "We continue to restrict videos from teen accounts and provide health experts and information in TikTok Search," the statement read. The term SkinnyTok has become widely used to describe an online subculture of influencers and content creators that promote extreme thinness. Under the umbrella of #SkinnyTok, creators make videos with snappy one-liners such as, "Skinny is the outfit," encouraging viewers to achieve their goals by following extreme weight loss advice. In Canada, viewers will see contact information and links for groups such as the National Eating Disorder Information Centre and Anorexie et boulimie Québec. TikTok's decision to block SkinnyTok came after the platform noted an increase in content promoting disordered eating and unhealthy weight loss behaviours earlier this year, according to the spokesperson. In April, France's Minister of State for Digital Affairs Clara Chappaz reported the hashtag to the country's digital watchdog and the European Commission. Chappaz and French nurse Charlyne Buigues have been campaigning to have TikTok block the hashtag since April. A petition Buigues started to get the hashtag banned gained nearly 35,000 signatures. On June 1, Chappaz said in French on X: "Today, @tiktok just confirmed to me that it has finally removed this unacceptable hashtag from its platform. This is a first collective victory. I salute it."
