... MATCH DAY ...
!
The three-match T20I series between Pakistan and Bangladesh is about to start with Pakistan taking on Bangladesh at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. All three matches in this series will be played at the same venue. Talking about the hosts, they will start their preparation for the next year's T20 World Cup under the newly appointed coach Mike Hession, with some young players included in the squad. Pakistan, led by Salman Agha, came into this series after losing their previous T20I series by 4-1 against New Zealand, so they will be itching to make a comeback. The Pakistan team will be without Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi as they are looking to build a new squad, and that's why they have given a chance to the players who performed well in the recently concluded PSL! While talking about Bangladesh, led by Litton Das, they also suffered a setback in the recently concluded series against UAE, where they lost the series 2-1, and they will be keen to bounce back. However, they will also be without key players like Soumya Sarkar, Mustafizur Rahman, and Taskin Ahmed. Skipper Litton Das will lead from the front with the bat, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Tawhid Hridoy, and Jaker Ali add firepower in the batting, with Mahedi Hasan bringing stability to the squad with his all-round skills. While on the bowling front, in the absence of frontline pacers, Shoriful Islam's experience will be key for them, and he will be supported by the likes of Tanzim Hasan Shakib, Tanvir Islam, and Rishad Hossain. A cracking contest is on the cards as both sides look to find answers from their previous series.

‘My first thought was ‘oh gosh, there's an end point': One of ‘Fab Four', Kane Williamson shares his thoughts on Virat Kohli's Test retirement

Being one of the 'Fab Four', a term coined by former New Zealand Captain Martin Crowe first in 2014 for the quartet of Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, Joe Root and Steve Smith, Kiwi batsman Kane Williamson currently stands at the third highest run scorer among the four batsmen in Tests. While Kohli retired earlier this month after playing 123 Tests and amassing 9,230 runs, Williamson has played in 105 tests amassing 9,276 runs and is currently behind Smith's tally of 10,271 runs (116 Tests) and Root's tally of 13,006 runs (153 Tests). With the rest of the three of the 'Fab Four' batsmen still playing in Tests, 34-year-old Williamson has revealed how Kohli's retirement, a first among the four, made him wonder about having 'an end point'. 'My first thought was 'oh gosh, there's an end point. Because before that, you're on the journey, there's a pursuit there. And it's not connected to those other three, but we've all been playing at the same time, and we've all competed against each other for a long time and we all know each other pretty well. So then you do start to reflect a little bit. I know Virat pretty well, we've chatted a lot over the years, but you do realise that we're not just cricketers as well, we're human beings and your life situation changes.' Williamson told The Guardian in an interview. Williamson, who has a Test average of 54.88 runs, currently stands at 17th spot in the list of world's leading Test run scorers with Sachin Tendulkar sitting at the top with 15,921 runs. The Kiwi cricketer has arrived in England to play for Middlesex in the Vitality Blast as well County Championship and has shared his memories of playing country cricket in England. 'Summer's always got a nice buzz here in the UK and especially in London, so it's great to call it home for a few months. I know I really valued my time in England actually playing county cricket as a young player, getting exposed and having to learn. You're just constantly having to try and work things out but getting so many opportunities to do it. Whereas in most other parts of the world you're playing half as many games a year,' added Williamson. New Zealand will next play an international match when the team travels to Zimbabwe for a T20I series involving hosts Zimbabwe apart from South Africa and New Zealand in July before they play a two Test series against Zimbabwe. The 34-year-old also talked about how he sees red-ball cricket as 'the soul of the game'. 'The opportunities now are vast and that's an amazing thing. But my passion was for the red-ball game, that was the pinnacle, and that's where my aspirations were, growing up. I guess on the other side, you have the white-ball formats and they come and they go pretty quickly and there's so much of it going on, which presents a lot of fantastic opportunities, but yeah, when I talk about the soul of the game I still see that as the red-ball cricket,' said Williamson.

Lahore Qalandars players erupt in wild celebrations at Shaheen Afridi's 'iPhone for all' announcement after PSL win

Lahore Qalandars won their third Pakistan Super League title last week when they defeated Quetta Gladiators in the final. However, an interesting video has surfaced from the post-match celebrations in the dressing room, where Shaheen Afridi is seen addressing the team. In a now-viral video, captain Afridi stood in front of his jubilant players in the dressing room and made an unexpected announcement: 'This time, everyone's getting an iPhone.' The declaration triggered a full-blown celebration, with cheers and jumps from a squad already on a high after clinching the trophy with a six-wicket win. The surprise wasn't just the phones themselves, but the sudden shift from tradition. Until now, Lahore had been handing out an iPhone only to the dressing room's chosen 'Player of the Match' after each game. But after wrapping up a third title in four years, Afridi threw that playbook out. Qalandars' 202-run chase, the highest-ever in a PSL final, was orchestrated by Kusal Perera's unbeaten 62, with strong support from youngsters Mohammad Naeem (46) and Abdullah Shafique (41). The game came down to the last over, but Sikandar Raza, who had landed in Lahore only ten minutes before the toss, coolly finished it off with a six and a four in the final moments. Lahore sealed their third title following triumphs in 2022 and 2023. Raza said it was unbelievable to reach Lahore and achieve success. "It is unbelievable, batted for 40-odd overs in the Test, flew to Dubai where I had breakfast and then lunch in Abu Dhabi and arrived minutes from the toss, so it's incredible," he said. Hasan Nawaz scored a brilliant 76 to lift Quetta to 201-9 after they won the toss and batted. Coming in at 21-2, Nawaz added 67 for the fourth wicket with Avishka Fernando (29) and another 46 with Dinesh Chandimal (22) to steady the ship. Lahore skipper Shaheen Afridi was the pick of their bowlers with figures of 3/24. It was Faheem Ashraf (28) who lifted Quetta past 200, taking 23 off the last Salman Mirza over. The six-team PSL was suspended on May 9 following the conflict between India and Pakistan. However, the league resumed on May 17 after a ceasefire between the two countries.

In another match on Court 14, Amanda Anisimova of the United States is locking horns with Clara Tauson of Switzerland. The 23-year-old American hasn't had the best of campaigns on clay this season, but found some momentum with straight-set wins in the first two rounds. 8th seed Lorenzo Musetti is under slight pressure as Argentina's Mariano Navone has an early break in the opening set. Navonne has never been to the fourth round of any Grand Slam, but has given himself a slight opening on Court Suzanne Lenglen. Paris Olympics gold medallist and 2024 Australian Open runner-up Qinwen Zheng is currently up against Victoria Mboko of Canada on Court Simonne-Mathiue . Zheng was a break up, but Mboko, playing her maiden Grand Slam Round 3 match, has earned the break back to make it 2-3 in the first set. Danger signs for Qinwen?
