Young racers rev up excitement at NSTP's Jom Heboh e-racing challenge

KUALA LUMPUR: The e-racing competition organised by The New Straits Times Press (NSTP) booth at the Jom Heboh carnival, hosted by Media Prima Berhad, received an overwhelming response — especially from parents and children. Open to participants aged 12 and below, the tournament was held in a knockout format, with five winners selected for the top five positions. NSTP's Business Development and Special Projects Manager Tengku Kaifi Mirza Tuan Cherit@Tengku Hamzah said the booth drew more than 800 visitors over the three-day carnival. "We were pleasantly surprised by the strong turnout this time. "We featured various engaging activities, including the racing simulator competition. "For just RM5 per pair, visitors could experience the thrill of real racing via a simulator equipped with onboard cameras and track displays on TV screens," he said. He added that many participants, particularly children, were eager to have multiple turns, proving the simulator's strong appeal. One of the winners, Mohammad Damien Alfie Mohd Samsuri, 11, said he thoroughly enjoyed trying the game for the first time — despite some initial nerves. "Alhamdulillah, I'm really happy. Thank you NSTP! I was a little nervous at first, but I really enjoy gaming. "I usually play mobile racing sims, so trying this one was amazing. If it comes back, I'd love to play again," he said after the competition. Meanwhile, booth emcee Azrul Affendi Ahmad said the contest also offered attractive prizes, including 100PLUS beverages, goody bags and trophies. "Events like this help spark interest among the younger generation in NSTP's products and publications," he said. Azrul added that, given the enthusiastic reception, the team hopes to bring the activity to upcoming Jom Heboh locations.

Myanmar junta extends ceasefire again after quake

YANGON: Myanmar's junta has extended a post-earthquake truce, after the expiry of a previous humanitarian ceasefire it was accused of flouting with a continued campaign of air strikes. The junta initially declared a truce in the many-sided civil war after a huge quake in late March killed nearly 3,800 people and left tens of thousands homeless. The truce has been extended before, although conflict monitors say fighting has continued, including regular air strikes. A statement from the junta information team on Saturday said there would be an extension of the armistice – which expired May 31 – until June 30. This would "facilitate rehabilitation and reconstruction activities in earthquake-affected areas", it said in the statement. It added that the state was "intensively engaging in reconstruction of damaged government offices and departments, public residences and transport facilities." The ceasefire would also allow the country to hold "a free and fair multi-party democracy general election", according to the statement. The country's junta chief said earlier this year that a long-promised election will be held by January, the first in the war-torn nation since the military staged a coup in 2021. In the statement, the military also warned it would still strike back against any offensives by the array of ethnic armed groups and anti-coup fighters. The announcement comes after Malaysian foreign minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan used a regional meeting last week to call for the extension and expansion of a ceasefire "beyond the currently affected zones." Malaysia currently holds the rotating chairmanship of the 10-country Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean). The bloc has led so far fruitless diplomatic efforts to end Myanmar's conflict since the junta deposed civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021.--AFP

PM makes surprise visit to MCF Chess event for grandson

KUALA LUMPUR: Amid a packed schedule, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today made a brief but meaningful stop to support his grandson, Sulaimaan Mohamad Khairul, at the Mini Chess Festival (MCF), held in conjunction with the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair. The thirteen-year-old Sulaimaan is competing in the inaugural MCF, organised by the Malaysian Chess Federation (MCF) and the New Straits Times Press (NSTP), at the World Trade Centre (WTC). He is taking part in the Under-18 category of the MCF Open Rapid Team Chess Tournament. Upon arrival, Anwar was welcomed by NSTP Business Development and Special Projects Manager Tengku Kaifi Mirza Tuan Cherit and Berita Harian News Editor (Features and Religion) Nazmi Yaakub. The prime minister, who spent around 10 minutes at the venue, was also seen engaging warmly with participants and spectators. His presence sparked excitement among the young chess players, many of whom took the opportunity to greet him and snap quick photos. Sulaimaan, when met, said he joined the competition organised by NSTP and MCF with the aim of winning it. The eldest of four said he learned how to play chess at the KL Chess Academy in 2020. "Every year, I also take part in chess tournaments," he said. Sulaimaan's father, Mohamad Khairul Ahmad Jahudi, 45, said he was proud and happy with his son's achievement in participating in the chess competition. He said he also wanted his son to build character and experience the ups and downs of competing. "The highs and lows, the wins and losses are valuable experiences he can carry with him in life," he said. Speaking to NSTP reporters later, Tengku Kaifi said Anwar's visit was a meaningful gesture that affirmed NSTP and MCF's efforts in promoting educational and intellectual development among youth through chess. "Chess enhances strategic thinking and problem-solving skills and is a healthy form of competition that has a positive impact on students. "As such, we feel excited, appreciated and encouraged that what we are trying to promote to the public has been acknowledged by the prime minister himself. "It shows that he (Anwar) also supports efforts by the wider community to educate students and further strengthen their thinking skills through learning chess," he said. With four categories, children, adults, open, and team tournament, MCF has attracted more than 200 chess enthusiasts of all ages, offering a total prize pool of RM20,000. The festival, held from May 28 to June 1, involves different tournaments, including the Open Blitz, National Youth Blitz, Open Rapid Team, National Youth Rapid, and Open Rapid. Meanwhile, before visiting the tournament, Anwar also stopped by the NSTP booth at the book fair, where a selection of NSTP publications, New Straits Times, Berita Harian, and Harian Metro, was available to visitors.
