Still no word on Rafizi's ministerial exit
KUALA LUMPUR: The position of Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli as Minister of Economy remains uncertain following his defeat in the recent PKR deputy presidency race. Communications Minister and government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said he had yet to receive any updates, adding that the public would need to remain patient. "As Asean is still ongoing — today marks the second day of the Asean-GCC-China Summit — I currently have no further information. We will have to wait," he said during Google's Project Sigma: Engaging Malaysian Gen Z for News event today. Rafizi had previously pledged to step down from his cabinet role should he fail to retain his position as PKR deputy president. He was defeated by Nurul Izzah Anwar, the former Permatang Pauh member of parliament, who secured 9,803 votes compared to Rafizi's 3,866. Meanwhile, Fahmi said the party had yet to determine the date for the Central Leadership Committee meeting, which will include discussions to verify new appointments and fill vacancies arising from the outcomes of the 2025 PKR National Congress.

Anwar rejects nepotism claims
Published on: Sunday, May 25, 2025 Published on: Sun, May 25, 2025 By: Ben Tan, Malay Mail Text Size: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today addressed allegations of nepotism surrounding the party's leadership, particularly the election of his daughter, Nurul Izzah Anwar, as deputy president. He maintained that Nurul Izzah's win was not an act of nepotism, but a reflection of the aspirations and support of grassroots members. Anwar also questioned critics who labelled her victory as nepotism, saying the accusations were unfair to both him and PKR. 'I still remember, when there were only a few hours left before I was arrested by the police to be imprisoned, I had no choice but to give the reins of the leadership to my wife (Datuk Seri Dr) Wan Azizah (Wan Ismail) to replace me. 'Wan Azizah also did not know how long that she would have to bear the responsibility. When Nurul Izzah had to leave university to continue the struggle, no one raised the issue of nepotism at that time. 'So, why is it being called nepotism now? Advertisement 'Wan Azizah was my own choosing, but Nurul Izzah was chosen (as deputy president) by party members,' he said during his winding-up speech at the PKR National Congress held at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre. Anwar said he raised the matter to encourage party members to reflect and consult veteran members about how decisions were made in the past. 'Yes, I chose Wan Azizah (to lead the party) at that time. I had to make a quick decision then. 'However, I want to remind that Nurul Izzah is the one who party members chose,' he said. Anwar expressed confidence that the new line-up is well-positioned to take PKR to greater heights. Anwar, who is also the prime minister, said the newly-elected leadership may come from different factions, but all are united under the same party banner. He urged members to move past the tensions from the recent division-level contests and focus on the party's shared mission. Anwar also called on members to continue the party's struggle, adding that PKR's success hinges on their commitment to its future. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Anwar defends decision to extend Azam's contract
Published on: Sunday, May 25, 2025 Published on: Sun, May 25, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Anwar said that although the move drew criticism from various quarters, including the opposition, he remains steadfast in his belief that Azam (right) has demonstrated an unprecedented level of assertiveness in tackling major corruption cases. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has defended the government's decision to extend the contract of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) ChiefCommissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, citing confidence in his bold approach to fighting corruption. Anwar said that although the move drew criticism from various quarters, including the opposition, he remains steadfast in his belief that Azam has demonstrated an unprecedented level of assertiveness in tackling major corruption cases. 'I believe, looking at the MACC's record over the decades, this is the first time the agency has dared to raid big-time tycoons. 'Yes, that's a fact. I could replace him tomorrow and discuss it with my Cabinet colleagues, but I'm not convinced that the next person would dare to take on billion-ringgit tycoons,' he said. Anwar, who is also Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president, said this during his policy speech at the PKR National Congress 2024/2025 held at Persada Johor International Convention Centre here tonight. Advertisement He said the MACC has acted decisively against high-profile individuals, including those bearing titles such as Datuk Seri, Tan Sri, and Tun, and therefore called on all parties to give the commission the necessary space to carry out its duties without interference. At the same time, Anwar expressed disappointment that the MACC's crackdown is often misinterpreted as driven by revenge against certain quarters. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
