Anwar rejects nepotism claims

By: Ben Tan, Malay Mail Text Size: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today addressed allegations of nepotism surrounding the party's leadership, particularly the election of his daughter, Nurul Izzah Anwar, as deputy president. He maintained that Nurul Izzah's win was not an act of nepotism, but a reflection of the aspirations and support of grassroots members. Anwar also questioned critics who labelled her victory as nepotism, saying the accusations were unfair to both him and PKR. 'I still remember, when there were only a few hours left before I was arrested by the police to be imprisoned, I had no choice but to give the reins of the leadership to my wife (Datuk Seri Dr) Wan Azizah (Wan Ismail) to replace me. 'Wan Azizah also did not know how long that she would have to bear the responsibility. When Nurul Izzah had to leave university to continue the struggle, no one raised the issue of nepotism at that time. 'So, why is it being called nepotism now?
Advertisement 'Wan Azizah was my own choosing, but Nurul Izzah was chosen (as deputy president) by party members,' he said during his winding-up speech at the PKR National Congress held at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre. Anwar said he raised the matter to encourage party members to reflect and consult veteran members about how decisions were made in the past. 'Yes, I chose Wan Azizah (to lead the party) at that time. I had to make a quick decision then. 'However, I want to remind that Nurul Izzah is the one who party members chose,' he said. Anwar expressed confidence that the new line-up is well-positioned to take PKR to greater heights. Anwar, who is also the prime minister, said the newly-elected leadership may come from different factions, but all are united under the same party banner. He urged members to move past the tensions from the recent division-level contests and focus on the party's shared mission. Court to hear Muhyiddin's reference bid on August 28

(Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: The High Court here will hear Muhyiddin Yassin's bid to refer legal questions to the apex court on the validity of certain provisions under the Sedition Act on Aug 28. The former prime minister is accused of making seditious statements during the Nenggiri by-election in Gua Musang, Kelantan, last year. Justice Jamil Hussin fixed the date after lawyer Joshua Tay, appearing for Muhyiddin, told the court that the defence and prosecution had agreed on the date. The court then instructed the prosecution and defence to file their submissions by Aug 14. Deputy public prosecutor Razali Che Ani appeared for the prosecution. Muhyiddin allegedly said he was not invited by the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong to be sworn in as prime minister following the 2022 general election, despite having obtained the majority support of 115 MPs. If found guilty, the Perikatan Nasional chairman and Bersatu president will face a jail term that could extend to three years or a maximum fine of RM5,000. Muhyiddin was initially charged at the Gua Musang sessions court in August last year. PM Anwar Proposes Strategic Housing Development Near Public Transport
GENERAL PETALING JAYA, June 4 (Bernama) – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has proposed that new people's housing projects be developed on or near public transport stations, as a move to encourage more comprehensive use of the public transport system. Anwar said that such a housing development concept would not only provide more strategic residences for low-income groups but also pave the way for a more sustainable and organised urban lifestyle. 'There are proposals to develop housing directly on top of public transport stations, but this requires certain amendments (to laws) and is currently being worked on. 'An example is the Kota MADANI project, where I emphasised comprehensive and centralised basic amenities for the welfare of the people, including vertical development,' he said. The Prime Minister was speaking at the Malaysia MADANI Scholars' Forum (FIM) Series 6 at Menara Prasarana here, tonight. The forum, organised by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), discussed the topic 'Transport for the People: Balancing Affordability, Quality, and Sustainability of Public Transport'. Also participating as panellists were Transport Minister Anthony Loke; Prasarana Malaysia Berhad President and Group Chief Executive Officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah; and Universiti Putra Malaysia Vice-Chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah. Meanwhile, Anwar said that open discourse platforms like the forum were crucial to ensure government policies were formulated by considering the voices of various parties, including academicians, industry experts, government supporters, and even the opposition. Anwar said the organisation of such forums proved that the government did not shut down criticism, but instead encouraged differing views, provided they were delivered professionally and constructively.

Anwar shares royal compliment on Malaysia's medical expertise
PETALING JAYA: Sultan of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah praised the quality and expertise of doctors at the National Heart Institute (IJN) after receiving treatment there. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim conveyed this during the Higher Education Ministry's Ilmuan Malaysia Madani forum titled "Transport for the People: Balancing Affordability, Quality and Sustainability of Public Transport." "His Majesty told me that, as someone with exposure to and experience with some of the world's best medical centres, he was very satisfied with the quality of service, excellence, and expertise of our doctors at IJN," he said. Anwar added that while the government welcomes criticism, Malaysians should also recognise national achievements, especially in healthcare. "So while we allow criticism, which is not a problem, we must also recognise the strengths we have, and there must be the drive to push ourselves to do better," he said. The Sultan of Brunei was in Kuala Lumpur for the 46th Asean Summit with other regional leaders. On May 27, he was reportedly feeling fatigued and was advised by health experts to rest at IJN. Anwar also spoke about his conversation with President of Guinea-Bissau General Umaro Sissoco Embaló, during which he asked why Malaysia was chosen despite limited bilateral trade. "His answer was that he follows developments here and sees Malaysia as a country on the rise, with significant potential. That's why he chose to come," he said. Embaló arrived today for a three-day visit—his first since taking office as president in February 2020. Malaysia and Guinea-Bissau established diplomatic relations in November 1974. In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with Guinea-Bissau reached RM4.1 million, with Malaysian exports amounting to RM4.04 million and imports standing at RM0.06 million.
