Court to hear Muhyiddin's reference bid on August 28

(Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: The High Court here will hear Muhyiddin Yassin's bid to refer legal questions to the apex court on the validity of certain provisions under the Sedition Act on Aug 28. The former prime minister is accused of making seditious statements during the Nenggiri by-election in Gua Musang, Kelantan, last year. Justice Jamil Hussin fixed the date after lawyer Joshua Tay, appearing for Muhyiddin, told the court that the defence and prosecution had agreed on the date. The court then instructed the prosecution and defence to file their submissions by Aug 14. Deputy public prosecutor Razali Che Ani appeared for the prosecution. Muhyiddin allegedly said he was not invited by the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong to be sworn in as prime minister following the 2022 general election, despite having obtained the majority support of 115 MPs. If found guilty, the Perikatan Nasional chairman and Bersatu president will face a jail term that could extend to three years or a maximum fine of RM5,000. Muhyiddin was initially charged at the Gua Musang sessions court in August last year. Royal Pahang Weave Contest Draws 103 Participants, Offers RM104,000 In Prizes
KUANTAN, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- The inaugural Tunku Azizah Cup Royal Pahang Weave Competition received an encouraging response with 103 participants producing 206 entries. Tengku Ampuan of Pahang, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, expressed her heartfelt gratitude and delight at the response to the competition, organised by Yayasan Tenun Pahang Diraja and supported by the Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation (Kraftangan Malaysia). Her Royal Highness, who is also the founder and chairman of Yayasan Tenun Pahang Diraja, stated that the competition is a crucial platform to empower and expand the reach of the Royal Pahang Weave at both national and international levels. 'The competition aims to uncover creative and innovative talent among weavers to produce Royal Pahang Weave of high quality in terms of aesthetics, design, technique, and skill, with potential commercial value,' Her Royal Highness said in a statement today. Contestants hail from diverse backgrounds across the country, comprising individuals, students, entrepreneurs, and inmates from Penor and Bentong Prisons. Tunku Azizah said Tengku Puteri Raja Tengku Puteri Jihan Azizah 'Athiyatullah Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah will lead the panel of judges, comprising the country's textile experts: Dr Habibah Abdul Jabar, Prof Dr Norwani Md Nawawi, Noorizal Ramly, and Noridah Johan, to evaluate all entries over four days, starting Aug 21. 'The judges will assess entries based on four criteria: excellence and originality, craftsmanship, innovation, and commercial potential. Most importantly, the products must be produced using handcrafting techniques as defined in the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) guidelines for handicrafts. 'Contestants are not allowed to use machines. Each product must incorporate Malaysia's heritage values, in terms of motifs, colours, production techniques, or cultural practices,' Tunku Azizah added. The competition offers a total of RM104,000 in cash prizes, along with trophies and certificates.

Kedah airport runway closed after ‘incident' with air force aircraft

(KLIA2 pic) PETALING JAYA: The runway of Sultan Abdul Halim Airport in Kedah has been temporarily closed after an incident involving an air force aircraft at around 11.30am. Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd said the runway was closed to help with the removal of the aircraft and for 'clearing works'. Advertisement 'A notice to airmen has been issued by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia, and the closure is expected to remain in effect until 4pm today. 'Passengers are advised to check with their respective airlines for the latest flight updates,' it said in a Facebook post. It is not immediately clear what had occurred. In May, the Alor Setar airport's runway was also forced to close after an air force fighter jet skidded on its nose while landing.
