PM Anwar meets BN MPs to discuss policies and current issues
JELI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's meeting with Barisan Nasional (BN) MPs last night was to discuss government policies and clarify current issues, said BN secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir. He said such meetings are held regularly as BN is a component of the Unity Government. 'As part of the Unity Government, BN frequently holds discussions, including regular sessions with top leaders not only from BN but also from other coalition partners. 'These meetings allow for the exchange of views and for the Prime Minister to provide updates on government policies and related matters,' said the Higher Education Minister after officiating the Jeli Umno Division Delegates Meeting in Bukit Nangka here today. The Prime Minister held the meeting with BN MPs at his official residence in Seri Perdana, Putrajaya, yesterday. The session, which lasted over an hour, is believed to have also addressed preparations for the upcoming Parliamentary sitting. In his speech at the division meeting, Zambry, who is also a Umno Supreme Council member, urged party members in Kelantan to continue strengthening their resolve and confidence in advancing the party's mission in the state. 'The spirit of relentless struggle must be upheld by all Umno members in Kelantan, as demonstrated during the Nenggiri by-election last year, which BN won. 'Our machinery was mobilised and we went to the ground — few expected us to win, but we succeeded through unity and determination,' he said. - Bernama

Court to hear Muhyiddin's reference bid on August 28
Published on: Wednesday, June 04, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 04, 2025 By: Ho Kit Yen, FMT Text Size: Former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin is accused of making seditious statements during the Nenggiri by-election in Gua Musang, Kelantan, last year. (Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: The High Court here will hear Muhyiddin Yassin's bid to refer legal questions to the apex court on the validity of certain provisions under the Sedition Act on Aug 28. The former prime minister is accused of making seditious statements during the Nenggiri by-election in Gua Musang, Kelantan, last year. Justice Jamil Hussin fixed the date after lawyer Joshua Tay, appearing for Muhyiddin, told the court that the defence and prosecution had agreed on the date. The court then instructed the prosecution and defence to file their submissions by Aug 14. Deputy public prosecutor Razali Che Ani appeared for the prosecution. Muhyiddin allegedly said he was not invited by the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong to be sworn in as prime minister following the 2022 general election, despite having obtained the majority support of 115 MPs. If found guilty, the Perikatan Nasional chairman and Bersatu president will face a jail term that could extend to three years or a maximum fine of RM5,000. Muhyiddin was initially charged at the Gua Musang sessions court in August last year. On Nov 27, Justice Azmi Abdullah allowed his application to have the case transferred to the Kuala Lumpur High Court. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Former Nenggiri assemblyman withdraws lawsuit over Bersatu expulsion
KUALA LUMPUR: Former Nenggiri state assemblyman Mohd Azizi Abu Naim has withdrawn the originating summons he filed at the High Court here, challenging the termination of his membership from the Bersatu party. Mohd Azizi's lawyer, Nur Irdina Syahirah Mohammad Wardi, informed Judge Roz Mawar Rozain that the suit was withdrawn as it had become academic, given that the Nenggiri by-election had already taken place, resulting in the election of a new state assemblyman. Meanwhile, the defendants, including Kelantan State Assembly speaker Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah, who was represented by counsel Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud, applied for RM250,000 in costs. They argued that the case was of public interest and had required significant legal work due to its complexity, particularly with the involvement of the speaker's position, which has wider implications for the country's legislative body. Counsel Chetan Jethwani, representing Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, who were also named as defendants, sought RM250,000 in costs for both his clients. 'This lawsuit has no merit and would ultimately fail. This is evidenced by the withdrawal of the suit,' said Chetan. Judge Roz Mawar subsequently struck out the suit and ordered Mohd Azizi to pay costs of RM50,000 to Mohd Amar and RM50,000 to Muhyiddin and Hamzah. Mohd Azizi had originally filed the lawsuit on June 24 of last year, challenging his expulsion from Bersatu. He sought a declaration that his termination, communicated via a notice dated June 12, 2024, was unlawful and void, claiming the notice was issued with malice. Mohd Azizi argued that an amendment to Article 10 of Bersatu's constitution, which allows revocation of membership if a member supports a political rival, was unconstitutional.
