Shuttle bus balm to ease commuters' auto pain

1 2 Kolkata: The WBTC on Thursday started a trial bus shuttle service between Garia crossing and New Garia station. However, it faced resistance from local auto operators as the administration scrambled to address the transportation crisis following the indefinite closure of Kavi Subhash metro station. The Kavi Subhash station will stay shut for at least next nine months for the demolition of the old complex and the construction of a new one. Passengers, especially those getting off suburban local trains, are currently being forced to pay exorbitant auto fares — Rs 30-Rs 50 to travel to Shahid Khudiram metro station. According to transport officials, efforts were underway to introduce additional bus services to alleviate the travel woes of commuters. The 1.5km stretch between Shahid Khudiram and New Garia station currently doesn't have too many transport options. The existing bus services have proven insufficient to handle the passenger load. According to local commuters like Arnab Saha and Mridula Maitra, routes 45A and 45B operate sporadically during evening hours, while Naktala-Howrah mini buses run their Garia station services only during peak office hours. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NRIs Living In France Are Eligible For INR 2 Lakh Monthly Pension. "We have requested them not to terminate their services at Patuli. They have agreed in principle. However, we can only be sure when we find the resolution reflected on the ground," said Abhinava Paul of Kolkata Bus-o-pedia. The situation was further complicated by the discontinuation of routes during the pandemic, including route 206 (New Garia to Salt Lake) and mini buses S116 and S124 (Garia station to Howrah station). The transport authorities are considering whether these services can be restarted. WBTC, meanwhile, stated that it planned to operate one to two small buses during office hours. However, the resistance from auto operators threatens to impede this solution. A meeting between all stakeholders is likely soon to discuss possible steps.

Infra a pain point at Tiruvallur station

Chennai: From the long-delayed foot overbridge (FOB) project to closed ticket counters, and lack of basic amenities, Tiruvallur railway station continues to pose multiple challenges to its one lakh passengers every day. A major concern is the foot overbridge work being carried out under Amrit Bharat Scheme. "Work started in August 2023, and platforms were dug up. It's supposed to connect all six platforms, but it's still pending. Commuters are left to struggle. Construction materials are placed on the platform, and it is hard for people to walk," said K Baskar, of the Tiruvallur railway passengers welfare association. Beyond the FOB, the station suffers from poor infrastructure and a lack of amenities. Despite witnessing more than 180 train halts per day across six platforms, shelters are inadequate. "If it rains, passengers are exposed. There's no protection," Baskar added. Another long-standing issue is the access road from the Manavalanagar side, used by nearly 50% of the station's commuters. Even during light rain, water stagnation makes this route impassable. "Manavalanagar is a densely populated residential area and a key traffic junction where two state highways meet. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Yet, the second entrance to the station remains unserved," Baskar said. "There is no functioning counter during peak hours. Commuters are left without options," he added. While escalators have been installed for island platforms 2 and 3, the sanctioned lift is yet to be set up. "Even CCTV installation at the station is incomplete. Trains halt here for a long time — it's a major suburban hub. But the facilities don't reflect that," said T Sadagopan, a resident of Pattabiram. A Southern Railway official said that projects are progressing in phases under the Amrit Bharat Scheme. "Stations like Mambalam, Chennai Beach, and Park are set to be reopened this Sept. Work at Tiruvallur and other stations may take longer," the official added.

Silchar MP raises demand for direct flight to Delhi in Parliament

Silchar: Silchar MP Parimal Suklabaidya made a strong pitch in the Lok Sabha for the introduction of a direct flight between Silchar and New Delhi, reviving a long-pending demand from the Barak Valley region. Participating in a debate in the Lower House on Wednesday, the BJP MP underscored the urgency of enhancing air connectivity between the remote northeastern city and the national capital, calling it a "necessity rooted in both practicality and regional equity." Currently, air passengers from Silchar are forced to travel to Delhi via either Kolkata or Guwahati, resulting in travel times that often exceed five hours. Suklabaidya termed the lack of direct connectivity as not only an inconvenience but also a financial and emotional burden for frequent travellers, including students, patients, officials, entrepreneurs and tourists. "Silchar is not just a city in Assam — it's a strategic gateway to neighbouring states like Mizoram, Tripura, and parts of Meghalaya," the MP said. "In the absence of direct flights, the region suffers a connectivity deficit that affects mobility, economic development, and access to healthcare," he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Foods and Natural Strategies That May Support Lower Back Wellness Learn More Undo Suklabaidya urged the civil aviation ministry to take immediate steps under the Centre's UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme to facilitate a direct flight between Silchar and Delhi. "This is not merely about convenience. It is about fairness, accessibility, and integrating the Barak Valley more meaningfully with the rest of the country," he said. He added that such a move would also support the govt's broader goal of strengthening infrastructure and reducing regional imbalances in the northeast.
