Snake bites on pets on the rise as weather warms in Colorado, here's what to do if your dog is bitten
Veterinarians at Colorado State University said they are already seeing a return of snake bites to pets as the weather continues to warm in Northern Colorado. The first snake bite to a dog that the CSU hospital treated came in at the end of March.
"The fact that we have had these 80 degree days, it does not surprise us at all that the snakes are coming out of hibernation," said Mark Ryan, doctor at emergency and critical care resident at CSU's vet teaching hospital.

Though snakes are typically making their way out of hibernation around this time of the year, some were able to get an earlier start due to some warmer temperatures in Colorado in March.
"This is the time of year where we usually see them coming through," Ryan said. "People are starting to take their dogs on hikes again, especially up at Horsetooth Reservoir. There are a lot of snakes up there. (Dogs) are running off leash and their paths cross, and the snake has only one way to defend itself, and that is with a strike."

Ryan said around 25% of snake bites involving venomous snakes are "dry bites," or those that do not transfer venom to the person or animal bitten.
Also, compared to the venomous rattlesnakes in other regions of the country, Ryan said Coloradans are fortunate to have less poisonous snakes.
"We are very fortunate here that the prairie rattlesnake has a weak venom. The prognosis for a dog or cat getting bit by a rattlesnake is fantastic," Ryan said.
Symptoms of venomous bites usually show within 30 minutes and are commonly identified by swelling and visible discomfort in your pet.
Ryan said, if possible, it is important to first separate your pet from the snake. Then, he encouraged people to safely try and identify the snake before leaving the location. That may include keeping a safe space from the snake and using a phone or camera to zoom in and take a photo of the snake.
By taking a photo or otherwise identifying he snake, people can then help the veterinarians get a lead on how to treat the bite.
While it is important to try and get to a veterinarian as soon as possible, Ryan said it is also important to know that most animals can go hours without treatment if absolutely necessary. Therefore, their owners can safely but quickly commute to a nearby doctor without significant concern of their pet being severely impacted.
"We will identify swelling, we will look for the puncture wounds," Ryan said.

Of the dogs CSU has treated thus far for snake bites, nearly all have been able to receive antivenom and then go home without the need for hospitalization.
Ryan said most dogs who have been bitten by snakes are bitten either in their snout, their torso area or lower on their legs near their feet.
"Most likely, your dog is going to be fine if treated with antivenom," Ryan said.

The German conservative party of Chancellor Friedrich Merz wants to charge foreign medical students for their studies if they return to their home countries immediately after graduation instead of working in Germany. In the United Kingdom, annual international fees range between £43,700 ($59,232) at the Cardiff Medical School in Wales, to £67,194 at the Cambridge Medical School, according to UK testing site UKCAT The secretary of state in the German Health Ministry, Tino Sorge, also called for measures to prevent foreign medical students from returning to their home countries after completing their studies. "Our goal must be to retain such highly qualified professionals. We need to attract young doctors to work in Germany instead of watching them leave," the CDU politician told the newspaper. He added that each medical school place comes with significant costs. Florian Müller, the research policy spokesman for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, told Bild that the federal states should independently regulate the repayment of study costs. "We need to focus much more on ensuring that international talents work in Germany after university," he said.

The wildfire smoke returned, but levels have not been high. For this evening, we should stay dry until after 8 or 9pm as a wave of scattered showers and a few storms are expected to impact areas south of HWY 29 for a few hours tonight. With clear skies tonight up north, expect temperatures in the upper 40s and low 50s. With clouds holding areas south, expect lows in the middle to upper 50s. Tomorrow, sunshine in the Northwoods with clouds and a few passing showers mainly south of Appleton. Highs will range from the middle and upper 60s to low 70s, warmest up north where you will see more sunshine. This boundary will start to work north during the evening and that will fill in the clouds and shift the rain chances further north, so expecting a few showers Thursday evening and night. Friday will be our best chance to see the rain. Expect rain that could be steady at times up north for the morning and early afternoon, with clouds and a few spotty showers south of Green Bay. Highs will be in the low to mid 50s up north, with low to mid 60s south of Green Bay. Total rainfall amounts 0.25-0.75″, isolated higher. Bryan Norcross: Hurricane season to continue on pause for a while
Updated at 12:30 p.m. ET Wednesday, June 11, 2025 The atmosphere over the tropical Atlantic continues to be hostile to tropical development. High pressure, which is often sprawled across the Atlantic, has persistently nosed well into the Gulf. That high has blocked any tropical systems from turning north and caused persistent dry weather across Florida. Occasional disturbances have moved off Africa and through the tropical moisture belt south of the high-pressure system, as we expect this time of year. However, the unusual breadth and strength of the high has directed systems with the potential to develop into the Eastern Pacific. Two storms have already formed and another is likely. The second factor keeping the Atlantic quiet is Saharan dust. The flow around the high-pressure system has opened a persistent channel for the dusty air to spread west into the Caribbean and occasionally to Florida and into the Gulf. Artificial Intelligence Among New Tech Shaping Forecasts During 2025 Hurricane Season The ocean water temperatures across the tropical Atlantic between the Caribbean and Africa have returned to normal this year after two years of being extremely warm. That means that, unlike last year, no storms are unlikely to form east of the Caribbean until the water warms up later in the hurricane season. Water temperatures in the Caribbean Sea and the southern Gulf are always warm enough for tropical development, and this year they are even warmer than normal. A disturbance has to trigger a system to organize, however, and the dust and the storm track into the Pacific have kept the lid on any development. Computer forecast models, including the new AI models, are showing a slight chance that something might develop in the far western Gulf next week, but the chances are very low. Until the sprawling high-pressure system breaks down, tropical development is unlikely. The odds favor the Atlantic staying quiet through next week, at least. The delayed start to the hurricane season is not unusual. About a third of the time since 1950, the first Atlantic storm was named after June 15. And it's important to note that the eventual busyness of the hurricane season is not related to how it starts. In 2004, which was a gangbuster year with four hurricanes impacting Florida, the first storm to get a name in the tropics was Bonnie, and that wasn't until August 9. Alex formed on August 1, but in the far North Atlantic. So that wasn't related to the season's tropical developments. All indications are that this hurricane season will get busy once it gets going. Researchers at Colorado State University updated their seasonal prediction today but did not change their numbers from their April forecast. They are still calling for 17 named storms, 9 of them hurricanes, with 4 of them reaching Category 3 or above. Updated 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season Forecast Maintains Above-average Predictions Fueled By Warm Ocean Temps Hurricane season forecasts are issued by a variety of companies and agencies around the world. They all predict a similar outcome to the CSU numbers - average to slightly above average activity. But the CSU team acknowledges that the forecast is more uncertain this year than normal. If the tropical Atlantic warms up before the peak of the season, or a hurricane-supporting La Niña develops in the Pacific this fall, none of us will be surprised.
