KUCHING (May 13): The Works Ministry is determined to position Sarawak and Sabah as vital pillars in Malaysia's national development strategy as it transforms the construction sector into a more sustainable, digital and resilient one.
Its minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said this is guided by key frameworks such as the National Construction Policy 2030 and the Construction 4.0 Strategic Plan, as well as cross-sector initiatives.
'We are moving with purpose to accelerate Building Information Modelling (BIM) and industrialised building system (IBS) adoption; drive digitalisation and smart infrastructure planning; build industry-wide capacity through training re-skilling and inclusive participation; and foster public-private partnerships that deliver long-term impact,' he said in his speech at the opening of International Construction Week (ICW) Borneo 2025 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching here today.
Nanta also praised the leadership of Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Malaysia chief executive officer Zainora Zainal for her efforts in expanding CIDB's presence across Sarawak and Sabah through training programmes, regulatory support and capacity building.
He said ICW Borneo 2025 marked a strategic turning point for the construction industry.
'This is not just an industry gathering—it is a strategic convergence of minds, markets, and missions. The two-day programme offers more than just dialogue—it offers direction.'
Held for the first time in East Malaysia, ICW Borneo 2025 is themed 'Innovative Construction for a Sustainable Future', and has drawn policymakers, industry players and construction technology experts from across Asean and beyond.
Among the highlights was the Construction Sustainability Summit, featuring sessions such as 'The Hydrogen Revolution: Sarawak's Pathway to a Green Energy Economy'; 'Driving Sustainable Growth Through Clean Power'; and 'Green & Innovative Construction Materials' with speakers from Atelier One, Atelier Ten, Green School Bali, Gamuda and Rubner Timber Engineering.
Another major draw was the BuildXpo Borneo showcase.
'Featuring over 20 exhibiting organisations, BuildXpo presents cutting-edge construction technologies, materials, and systems tailored to Southeast Asia's evolving infrastructure needs.
'Here, visitors can engage with AI-powered tools, modular construction systems, smart building solutions, and green innovations,' he added.
Nanta also highlighted the rising international interest in this year's edition.
'This year, I'm pleased to note increased international participation, including from China, underscoring the growing Asean–China cooperation in infrastructure and technology exchange.'
He also encouraged greater collaboration across the region.
'Let this be the spark for new partnerships, bold strategies, and actionable change. Let us move forward not just with ambition, but with alignment between policy, industry, and community,' he said.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof clarified this when met by reporters at the Majlis Ibadah Korban held at Masjid Darul Husni Warrahmah here today. 'No, it has nothing to do with that. It is actually due to the global situation, particularly the decline and fluctuation in oil prices,' he said. Petronas had earlier stated that its internal budgeting was based on Brent crude prices averaging between US$75 and US$80 per barrel. However, the global benchmark has since fallen and is currently hovering around US$65 per barrel. 'Even for Petronas to remain sustainable, oil prices must be above US$60 per barrel. That is why they have to re-evaluate their position,' Fadillah added. MORE TO COME fadillah yusof gas aggregator job cuts Petronas Petros

RM88mil to upgrade 121 overcrowded schools

SHAH ALAM: The Works Ministry will upgrade 121 overcrowded schools, involving 127 classrooms in six states, with an allocation of RM88mil. Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan (pic) said 127 letters of acceptance were handed over to the successful contractors yesterday to implement the project in Selangor, Langkawi, Perak, Pahang, Negri Sembilan, Terengganu and Penang. 'Selangor has the highest number of letters, namely 111 works, followed by seven in Perak, four in Pahang, three in Negri Sembilan, and one each in Terengganu and Penang. 'The scope of the project involves 117 construction works for premier classrooms and 10 classrooms for the Inte-grated Special Education Programme using the industrialised building system (IBS) concept,' he told reporters at the Selangor Public Works Department headquarters here yesterday, Bernama reported. Ahmad said the IBS concept not only helps to speed up the construction process but also ensures better and sustainable construction quality, with all projects targeted to be completed by October. 'These projects are a proactive step by the Education Ministry to achieve the target of implementing a single-session school system by 2030. 'In addition, the ministry also wants to provide more modern and comfortable facilities while creating a conducive teaching and learning ecosystem for students and teachers as well as school staff,' he said. Earlier, Ahmad handed over the letters to 127 contractors for the project. They were selected through an open tender that was implemented from April 24 to May 16. A total of 14 district engineers from the Public Works Department were also appointed to monitor the construction work of the projects.
