Winning at Edgbaston will be one of my 'happiest memories' whenever I retire: Shubman Gill

Leading India to their first ever Test win over England at
Edgbaston
will remain one of his "happiest memories" whenever the time comes to call it quits, said India captain
Shubman Gill
revelling in the resounding series-levelling victory here.
For the 25-year-old whose captaincy stint began with India losing the series opener at Leeds, Gill underlined an all-round show from the team to make a strong comeback that was also the team's first win over the hosts in Edgbaston.
"This is something that I would cherish for the rest of my life; probably whenever I would retire, I think this would be one of my most happiest memories," Gill said in a video shared by

"I was meant to take the last catch of this match, and (I am) very content and happy that how we were able to finish this match.
"(There are) three more important matches to go; a quick turnaround after this one and I think it's good because the momentum is now with us."

Gill said Indian players took responsibility for their performances.
"The way everyone came in contributed with the ball, with the bat, those are huge positives," he said.
"When there are different people stepping up and different people performing at different stages, that's what you want. That's what makes a champion team, and those were some great signs for us."
In his dressing room speech, the Indian skipper lauded his teammates.
"We have worked very hard to win this position. Over the past six to eight months, I knew how hard it was to be able to get a Test win, especially to do it here where we haven't won a Test match ever," he said.
"I just want to say that I'm very proud of you, everyone, because I think on day one, we mentioned it's going to take each and every one of us to win a Test match, especially here in this country and everyone contributed," Gill added.

was meant to get a five-wicket haul. Siraj's 6/99 also proved instrumental in India's win.
"To be honest it was an important match of an important series. As a player, it feels great to create such memorable (moments) and history," Siraj said.
"Whenever he was bowling, I was positioned at mid-off. I was telling him don't just go after taking wickets, keep bowling in one area and you will get the wickets.
"Jaisa first innings me bola tha, agar uski kismat me hai, to panja milega. Second innings, next day, dekho panja mil chuka hai (I had said in the first innings that if he has a five-for in his fate, he will get it. Look, he got one in the second innings)," an elated Siraj added.
Siraj said he would rate this as the third biggest Test win of his career.
"This is the third best match of my life. First was Gabba, then Lord's and now this. I cannot describe this feeling," he said.
Akash Deep added, "The biggest thing is that I took five wickets and our team won. It is a proud moment for me that I contributed in the team's win. I won't be as happy had I taken a maiden five-for and the game ended in a draw."
India vice-captain
Rishabh Pant
said this team wants to "defy all the past", referring to the side's underwhelming overseas record.
"The last time we came here, the task was incomplete at Edgbaston and this time, so happy that we were able to achieve it," he said.
"One thing that we always talk about is how we can learn as a team and defy all the past, whatever we have done but bringing this team together and making it to a different level, that's is all we need."

CG's Kiran kicks ball down history as India qualifies for AFC women's asian cup after more than a decade

Raipur: On a rugged, undulating patch of ground filled with gravel in Balod—a dusty town in Chhattisgarh—she kicked her first football barefoot and took to the game with her two brothers. Since no girls played football in the town, she played with boys, unmindful of the injuries she suffered while chasing a dream that many never dared. Today, the tribal girl, Kiran Pisda, 23, has broken into the playing eleven of India's senior women's team and booked a place for the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026. Kiran is the pride of Chhattisgarh, motivating young kids from the hinterland to dream big and work towards that goal with hard work and perseverance. Hailing from a middle-class family, with her father working as an assistant superintendent in the Balod district collectorate, Kiran also excels in academics and is currently pursuing her bachelor's in physical education (BPEd). Talking to TOI, Kiran said, "There were neither any coaches nor proper facilities, including sports equipment, during my school days. We were only given a football, and girls never took to football. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Đây có thể là thời điểm tốt nhất để giao dịch vàng trong 5 năm qua IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo But I loved the game and started playing with boys, including my two brothers, which gave me confidence and an advantage when playing against women. I also got both my ankles injured while playing on the dusty, stony ground. Even now, when I visit the ground, I see children playing barefoot in the same conditions, often injuring themselves." "Initially, I started as a striker when I began playing professional football, but over time my position shifted. Now I play as a defender," she said. Sharing her excitement about India's historic qualification for the AFC Women's Championship, Kiran said, "Five nations — Mongolia, Iraq, Timor-Leste, India, and hosts Thailand — competed in the qualifying round. Only one team advanced to the main tournament. We won all four of our matches, beating Mongolia 13-0, Iraq 7-0, Timor-Leste 4-0, and finally Thailand 2-1. Defeating Thailand on their home turf was particularly challenging," she said. "India qualifying for the Asian Cup after more than a decade is a big milestone for women's football in the country. I am really looking forward to representing India in the 2026 championship." Kiran previously represented India at the 2022 South Asian Football Championship in Nepal. While celebrating the squad's historic qualification, the Chhattisgarh Football Association acknowledged the role of institutional support in nurturing athletes. They expressed gratitude to NTPC Korba for supporting Kiran's training and development. Sarita Kujur Toppo, senior football coach, Chhattisgarh sports department, talking to TOI, said, "After completing her 12th in Balod, Kiran moved to Raipur for higher studies, following a brief stint with the Durg football team." Her breakthrough came during the Chhattisgarh League, where she scored an impressive 20 goals — the highest by any player in the tournament — while representing Raipur. "One day, she approached me for coaching. I arranged her accommodation at Vivekananda Stadium in Kota, Raipur. The rest is history," Kujur recalled. "Her discipline, dedication, and eagerness to learn every aspect of the game set her apart." She initially missed selection in the junior India camp but was not disillusioned. She took the feedback seriously, worked on her weaknesses, and bounced back stronger. Her consistent performance in the 14th national championships earned her offers from various football clubs across India, and she landed with Kerala Blasters. In 2022, she also signed with a European football club — a rare achievement for an Indian woman footballer. "Today, Kiran is counted among India's top women footballers," Kujur said proudly.

FC Goa complete foreign quota with Timor, Moreno signings

David Timor has seven years experience of playing in La Liga where he rubbed shoulders with the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo Panaji: Despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of the top-tier Indian Super League (ISL), FC Goa have completed their foreign quota for the season, with the signing of experienced Spanish midfielder David Timor and centre-back Pol Moreno. Timor, who has seven years' experience of playing in La Liga, where he rubbed shoulders with the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo , arrives as a replacement for Carl McHugh. The midfielder has played over 400 games in the top tiers of Spanish football. A product of the Valencia youth setup, Timor has played for La Liga teams like Osasuna, Girona, Valladolid, Leganes, Getafe and Las Palmas. 'There are not too many players with his kind of profile in Indian football,' said a senior official. 'David has rich experience, and has always been dependable. He can win the ball in midfield, switch play and he is unafraid to take a shot at goal. He will have a huge role to play for FC Goa this season.' Moreno, the other Spaniard in the team, will also have a significant role to play as a replacement for captain Odei Onaindia, who chose to return home to Spain due to personal reasons. With almost 100 matches and nearly 7,000 minutes for Racing Santander, his last club where he spent four years in La Liga 2, Moreno will be partnering India captain Sandesh Jhingan in central defence. He has spent time in different divisions in Spain and then moved to GIF Sundsvall in the Swedish top tier. The signings of Timor and Moreno mean Goa will have six foreign players for the AFC Champions League Two Playoff against Oman champions Al Seeb at Fatorda on August 13. The other foreign signings include Dejan Drazic, Iker Guarrotxena, Borja Herrera and Javier Siverio.

India vs England: Vexed Shubman Gill confronts Zak Crawley with fiery message at the stroke of stumps on day 3 at Lord's

The time-wasting tactics enabled by England openers left India captain Shubman Gill frustrated. Gill did not refrain from giving Zak Crawley a mouthful at the stroke of Stumps on Day 3 at Lord's. read more Day 3 of the Lord's Test culminated on a dramatic note as India captain Shubman Gill showcased his animated side to England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett. After restricting India to 387 - the same total at which England had bundled out in the first innings - the hosts came out to bat with the intention to see out the remaining five minutes without losing any wicket. India, on the other hand, wanted to make the English batters face the music for at least two overs, but Crawley and Duckett foiled India's plans by successfully enabling time-wasting tactics. Zak Crawley was seemingly in no hurry to play the next delivery. He got away from the crease just when Bumrah was about to bowl the delivery. This vexed Shubman Gill who did not refrain from making hand gestures and hurling a strong-worded message towards the England openers. 'Grow some f****** b****,' Gill was on the face of Crawley as it took a long time to get things going despite just two balls being bowled in the over. The drama resumed after a few balls, this time Crawley complained about being in discomfort after Bumrah's ball brushed his glove. Crawley's act met with what seemed to be sarcastic applause from Bumrah and Co. Gill once again came into the picture and had a war of words with Crawley, ending in a stare-off between the two. The over eventually concluded and as did the day. England reached 2/0 at stumps on Day 3. Rahul was the top scorer in India's innings. He notched his second Lord's century off 177 balls. Unfortunately, he could not take the innings beyond the 100-run mark. Pant contributed 74 off 112 balls before getting run out by Ben Stokes while going for an unnecessary single, ending a fourth-wicket partnership of 141 runs with Rahul at the stroke of lunch, while Jadeja displayed consistency again, this time chipping in with a vital 131-ball 72. As no team could muster a lead after 1st innings, the match hangs in balance. It will be intriguing to see what the Day 4 will have in store.
