Woman teacher losess RM23,000 to phone scam
KANGAR: A female teacher in Pauh, Arau lost RM23,000 after she was believed to have been duped by a phone scam syndicate from individuals posing as a Touch 'n Go officer and the authorities on May 29.
Arau district police chief Supt Ahmad Mohsin Md Rodi said the 26-year-old teacher received a phone call from an individual introducing himself as a Touch 'n Go officer at 12.21 pm while she was at school, informing her that her Touch 'n Go had been used to steal money from someone else's account.
'Then, the call was supposedly connected to the authorities (namely) from the Penang police contingent headquarters (IPK), who claimed that the teacher was involved in money laundering and drug smuggling crimes.
'The teacher was asked to transfer money to a bank account given by the suspect totalling RM23,000 in a single transaction to avoid having her bank account frozen. The teacher made the money transfer transaction on the same day,' he said in a statement today.
Ahmad Mohsin said the teacher only realised she had been scammed after checking the information again and lodged a police report the next day on May 30.
'This case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code and further investigations are being conducted by the Commercial Crime Investigation Division of Perlis IPK. We would like to remind the public not to easily panic if they receive a call claiming they are involved in a crime,' he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: A 57-year-old retiree lost his life savings of RM161,000 after falling victim to an online scam involving a fake offer to become a sperm donor for a woman supposedly from Hong Kong. The victim, identified only as Tan, said he is now penniless and unable even to afford a bus ticket home. Tan recounted that in early February, he came across a Facebook advertisement offering HKD2 million (about RM1 million) in exchange for helping a housewife, who was allegedly desperate to have a child. "Soon after, I was contacted by a man claiming to be her lawyer. He informed me that I had been selected to be with Lee Na to help her conceive. "I was shocked and asked why I was chosen. He said it was because I had a handsome face," Tan said during a press conference at Wisma MCA today. The 'lawyer' then asked him to make several payments including RM10,000, RM30,000 and RM1,000 supposedly for registration fees, travel expenses, and other costs. Tan said he proceeded with the payments in March, lured by the promise of receiving RM390,000 after all formalities were completed. However, following the transactions, he was contacted by his bank and warned that he could be a victim of a scam. Tan said he confronted the 'lawyer', who continued to reassure him of the payout but requested an additional RM120,000, allegedly to cover the fees of two medical specialists from the United States. "I made three more transfers for that. Then I asked to meet the woman, as I had only been dealing with the lawyer. I even requested a video call, but he refused." The lawyer continued to make excuses, giving repeated assurances that the promised RM1 million would be paid. It was only then that Tan realised he had been scammed. He lodged a police report and sought help from the MCA Public Services and Complaints Department. Its head Datuk Seri Michael Chong said the victim admitted that his decision was foolish, but still came forward in hopes of preventing others from falling into similar traps. "This is the second case of its kind we've received in recent times. Last year, we handled a similar complaint. "I urge the authorities to step up monitoring of Facebook advertisements, especially those involving potential scams like this," he said.

Former Director Charged With Improper Use Of Company Pproperty
SEREMBAN, June 5 (Bernama) -- A former company director pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to eight charges of improper use of company property, amounting to RM153,609 between 2019 and 2020. Chin Wei Choong, 42, made the plea after the charges were read out before Judge Mohamad Kamil Nizam. On four of the charges, he was charged as a director of Ambitious Supreme Sdn Bhd, to have used the company property, involving RM8,829; RM32,710; RM60,000; and RM7,070, without the consent or ratification of the company's general meeting to indirectly benefit him. It was for payments to several companies for work done for Tadika Universal Sdn Bhd, a company with which he had an interest, through Academy Adelphi Worldwide Hotels Sdn Bhd, between Nov 1, 2019, and Jan 10, 2020. He was also charged with four counts of committing a similar offence, involving RM10,000; RM10,000; RM15,000; and RM10,000 involving company property, to indirectly benefit him through a loan made to Tadika Universal Sdn Bhd, in which he has an interest, through Academy Adelphi Worldwide Hotels Sdn Bhd between Aug 6 and Oct 28, 2020. The offences were allegedly committed at a premises in Oakland Commerce Square here. The charges, framed under Section 218(1)(a) of the Companies Act 2016 and punishable under Section 218(2) of the same law, provide imprisonment for up to five years or a fine not exceeding RM3 million or both, if convicted. Chin was allowed bail of RM1,000 for each charge with one surety, and the court set July 31 for mention. Prosecuting officer Muhammad Akmal Azmi, from the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), appeared for the prosecution, while lawyer Tan Zhi Xian represented Chin.

Johor rolls out new housing plan for low income group outside eKasih system
ISKANDAR PUTERI: The newly introduced Rumah Prihatin Johor (RPJ) housing initiative to help low-income individuals in rural areas own homes, is expected to begin construction in August. State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said RPJ is a state government initiative to fill the gap in housing aid for those who are excluded or not listed under the e-Kasih database, but still fall under the low-income category. He said applications are now open for 500 units to be developed with an allocation of RM15 million, offering two categories of homes priced at RM86,000 for three-bedroom units and RM66,000 for two-bedroom units. 'These houses will be built on privately owned land and are expected to be completed within seven months. 'This is one of the fastest and most effective housing programmes ever implemented in Johor, with direct impact on the people,' he told a press conference here today. Mohd Jafni said the state government is also providing a subsidy of RM30,000 and successful applicants are only required to pay RM36,000 or RM56,000, depending on the type of home. He said the RPJ eligibility conditions have also been improved, including considering applicants who share land with family and have not received any form of housing assistance from any agency. Meanwhile, under the Rumah Kasih Johor (RKJ) initiative, construction of 500 housing units has been ongoing since 2023 and will continue until 2026 across all 56 state constituencies, with an allocation of over RM67.5 million. So far, 50 units have been completed and handed over to recipients, while 120 units are under construction and 165 units are in the implementation stage, he said. Mohd Jafni said the RPJ and RKJ initiatives were implemented with strong cooperation from the Johor Housing Development Corporation (PKPJ), local authorities, district offices and elected representatives. He also reminded the public that the state government has not appointed any agents or middlemen for applications involving the Johor Affordable Housing (RMMJ) scheme, and all applications must be made through the 'erumah' portal.
