Not Karun Nair! Ex-India Batter Wants GT Star To Bat At No. 3 In 4th Test

News1820-07-2025
Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar suggested that Sai Sudharsan should have been given more opportunities to play at number 3 in the Indian batting order, especially considering the favourable conditions of flat pitches and a weak English bowling attack.
He expressed disagreement with the team management's decision to go with Karun Nair at number 3 after giving Sudharsan just one chance in the first of the five-Test series against England last month.
In a video posted by ESPNcricinfo on X, Manjrekar said, 'Sai Sudharsan was always my number 3 after the first Test match; there was promise shown with 30 runs. And when you have flat pitches and one of England's weakest bowling attacks, you want to play a young player. So Karun Nair at number 3 I didn't agree with. Maybe the team management might just want to prove a point that they were backing the right horse and give him one more match—that's something that happens with team management—but I would like to see Sai Sudharsan at number 3."
Sudharsan made his Test debut in the series opener against England, where he played at number 3 as Indian skipper Shubman Gill batted at number 4 after veteran batter Virat Kohli, who batted at that position for a decade, announced his retirement from Test cricket earlier this year.
Sudharsan was dismissed for 0 in the first innings followed by a decent 30 runs in the second. He was dropped from the playing XI in the second fixture, and Karun Nair, who batted at number 6, was promoted to number 3.
Nair failed to perform in the ongoing England series, making only 131 runs in six innings at an average of 21.83 and a best score of 40.
India will clash against England in the fourth Test starting from July 23. The visitors are currently 1-2 down in the five-match series after losing the third Test at Lord's by 22 runs, despite a fighting effort by the tailenders and Ravindra Jadeja while chasing.

Kuldeep Yadav told to add another dimension to his game to become a regular in Tests: 'With all due respect to his…'

Former India batter Robin Uthappa has sent a clear message to Kuldeep Yadav with important advice about how he can position himself to feature more regularly in Test matches. Kuldeep travelled to England for a five-match Test series but didn't feature in a single match, which drew some flak. The left-arm spinner made his Test debut in 2017, but since then, he has played only 13 matches. He last played a red-ball match for India against New Zealand in 2024. Kuldeep Yadav didn't play a single Test on the England tour.(PTI) Head coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Shubman Gill faced some criticism for not including Kuldeep in any of the matches in England. However, the 2-2 series result ultimately helped justify the decision to go with Washington Sundar instead. The team management decided to go with depth in the batting line-up in English conditions, and Sundar played the role well, scoring a century in Manchester and then a half-century at the Oval to help India draw the series. Sundar scored 284 runs at an average of 47.33. He didn't get much opportunity with the ball on pace-friendly tracks, but he managed to claim seven wickets in 74.1 overs he bowled. "Put Kuldeep in the 11 and make sure you're batting is still in a state where none of the fans will go after the team management or the captain. With all due respect to Kuldeep's prowess with the ball, he's got limitations to his batting. That's going to take a lot of effort from his side," he said on his YouTube channel. The former batter further gave an example of legendary Ravichandran Ashwin, who used to be a regular in overseas conditions too. Ashwin had 6 Test centuries to his name and played some crucial knocks in testing times to rescue India. "Ashwin has got 5-6 Test hundreds. If he can do that at the lower middle batting order, say at number eight or nine, then he will certainly play more Tests," he added.

Chennai Grand Masters director reveals surprising reason behind Gukesh and Pragg's absence from tournament: 'We simply didn't get any...'

Chennai Grand Masters tournament director GM Srinath Narayanan revealed the reason why World Champion D. Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa are not featuring at the event, read more The third edition of the Chennai Grand Masters tournament is underway, and much like every Chess tournament, it will feature a heavy Indian battalion. The likes of Arjun Erigaisi, who is a super GM with a current FIDE Ranking of No.5, will enter the tournament along with veteran Vidit Gujrathi. Besides the Indians, other prominent players like Anish Giri and Jorden van Foreest will also be present at the event. However, the competition will remain sans the two national jewels, R Praggnandhaa and the current World Champion of Chess, D Gukesh. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD While both Pragg and Gukesh have remained considerably busy over the last few years, they will miss out on the tournament. Not because they are taking some time off, but due to the fact that they have committed to raising the Indian flag somewhere else. Why Guki and Pragg not featuring in Chennai Grand Masters? Tournament Director and Grandmaster Srinath Narayanan addressed their absence and revealed the reason behind them not playing in the event. 'Ideally, we would have loved to have Gukesh and Pragg playing. But this year, we had to clash our event with the Grand Chess Tour because the calendar was insanely full. And we simply didn't get any free dates. But in the future, whenever they are available, we would certainly love to have them. And hopefully, we can schedule it at a time when it doesn't clash with another major event in the future years,' said Srinath. Gukesh, who is enjoying a purple patch in his career, will play at the St Louis Rapid and Blitz from August 10-15, a key leg of the Grand Chess Tour. Meanwhile, Praggnandhaaa has been juggling a packed schedule and hence could not find room to compete in the Chennai event. Despite the scheduling challenges, the Chennai Grand Masters tournament is set to garner much interest from chess fans and will make further strides towards relevancy. 'Over the last two years, we have already seen a tradition where a young talented player goes on to get world-class recognition after winning here. Happened with Gukesh in 2023, happened with Aravindh Chithambaram also… Similarly, we hope to keep unearthing more talents,' Srinath added.
