, in an interaction with ET, spoke about the upcoming Bihar assembly election, the role of his party, and leadership dynamics in the state. Edited Excerpts:In 2020, I wasn't part of the alliance because I wasn't given space within it. That was also when my father was unwell. The alliance didn't have faith that I could lead the party as my father did. Gradually, I was sidelined. During seat sharing, I was offered the fewest seats. Now, in 2025, the alliance has reposed faith in me. Our party delivered a 100% result in the Lok Sabha elections despite many ups and downs. Today, I have a seat at the table, contributing ideas and suggestions on government policy. The NDA is stronger than ever, and we are aiming for 225+ seats. As an ally, it's my responsibility to highlight issues. That said, I'm not part of the ruling alliance in the state, unlike at the Centre. I have no role in shaping state policies, so this is my only way to voice concerns. I'm not being rebellious-these are genuine issues. I believe in the CM who once pulled Bihar out of the jungle raj, and I still believe only he can do it again.Bihar has progressed, and I credit CM Nitish Kumar for that. But much more remains to be done. I've worked day and night on the 'Bihar First, Bihari First' roadmap. It includes solutions to core problems-like interlinking rivers, setting up education hubs, and promoting agriculture-based industries.I'm happy that the third NIFTEM institute in the country is coming to Hajipur, Bihar, announced in the last Union Budget. It will benefit food processing immensely. Young people are showing interest in this sector. Our ministry also supports micro-enterprises through a handholding scheme-Bihar has performed exceptionally well in this. We've also minimized post-harvest losses. The Cabinet recently approved ₹500 crore for 50 new irradiation units across the country. This will significantly improve farmers' ability to preserve perishable food.I don't believe so. At some point, the process had to begin. If it hadn't, people would have questioned why it wasn't done before elections in West Bengal or Assam. SIR is under the jurisdiction of a constitutional body-the Election Commission. If the opposition wants a debate, who will respond? The EC or a ministry? Rahul Gandhi says they lost Maharashtra due to irregularities in the voter list but forgets they won Jharkhand under the same EC.I will play the role of 'salt' in the alliance-without salt, no dish has taste. Some people try to undermine my 2020 performance when I contested alone. But my party can provide a 10,000-15,000 vote push on every crucial seat.Seat-sharing discussions haven't happened yet, so quoting a number would be unfair. But it will be resolved amicably. As for me-yes, I want to contest, and the party will take a decision after assessing all factors. In politics, never say never. But for now, I have no reason to explore alternative alliances. There's no vacancy for CM. NDA is united behind Nitish Kumar for both election and post-election leadership. But everyone should be ambitious-I believe in manifestation. So why not?

BJP Parliamentary Board to meet today, V-P pick top on agenda

With days to go for nominations for the vice-presidential election to close, the BJP-led NDA has 'more or less zeroed in' on Jagdeep Dhankhar's successor ahead of the party's Parliamentary Board meeting, scheduled for Sunday evening. According to sources, the 11- member Parliamentary Board – the BJP's highest decision-making body – chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will grant approval to the NDA's pick. The vice-presidential polls have been necessitated after Dhankhar, in a 'surprise' move on July 21, tendered his resignation citing health reasons amid the Monsoon Session. An insider said that following the meeting, the BJP's decision is then likely to be conveyed to NDA partners like Nitish Kumar's JD(U), the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) led by N Chandrababu Naidu and others. In line with the alliance's showcase of 'significant unity' in the vice-presidential polls, the NDA last week had authorised Modi and BJP president J P Nadda to take a call on the alliance's pick for the polls. 'During the Parliamentary Board meeting, senior leaders typically discuss the merits of various candidates. It concluded with the PM giving his final nod on the matter. For the vice-presidential polls, the party has screened several contenders, including sitting Governors and Lieutenant Governors as well outgoing Rajya Sabha MPs. However, the alliance is also considering the polls as an opportunity to display its unity,' a source said. 'During the filing of the nomination and on polling day, the NDA will make it a point to publicly project a united and consolidated front,' a senior BJP leader said. Even as the NDA's Parliamentary Party will meet on Tuesday over the issue, a three-day workshop has been organised for MPs to give them procedural training for the September 9 polls. Sources said that the core agenda of the NDA's meeting was to finalise the vice-presidential candidate, discussions on the 70 Rajya Sabha vacancies scheduled to arise in 2026, the ongoing gubernatorial reshuffle, Cabinet rejig and the appointment of the new BJP national president could also be on the table.

India's rare earth push aims to reduce reliance on imports: Report

India is making efforts to reduce its reliance on imported rare earth materials, which are vital to electric vehicles (EVs), renewable energy systems, electronics, and defense applications. Consulting firm Primus Partners has published a paper called "From Extraction to Innovation," which lays out a plan to ramp up domestic capabilities in critical rare earth magnets, as part of the government's overall aim to build domestic development. Consulting firm Primus Partners has published a paper called "From Extraction to Innovation," which lays out a plan to ramp up domestic capabilities in critical rare earth magnets, as part of the government's overall aim to build domestic development. Policy vision versus ground reality The report lays out five recommendations that, on paper, create a roadmap for India. These comprise long-term price guarantees on neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr) oxide and NdFeB magnets, pilot hubs in our mineral abundant states, ramping up of production at Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL), a national magnet stockpile and a central coordination cell with NITI Aayog or DPIIT. It also suggests a National Rare Earth Innovation Hub to encourage research and global technology partnerships. Collectively, these concepts offer a systematic methodology, but they also highlight just how much of India's rare earth plans are only beginning. Also Read : China+1 strategy boosts India's role in global auto component supply chains: Reports Small steps forward Recent actions reflect intent but also the magnitude of the deficit. The Union Budget 2024–25 granted customs duty exemption on essential minerals, indicating policy encouragement. And last year, IREL commissioned a Rare Earth Permanent Magnet (REPM) facility in Visakhapatnam. At ₹197 crore and with an annual capacity of 3,000 kg, the facility is a milestone — yet modest when compared to global production volumes. Global dependence remains entrenched The elephant in the room is still China. Controlling nearly 90 per cent of global rare earth magnet production, Beijing's dominance has left supply chains vulnerable to policy shifts and export restrictions. India, despite its mineral potential, is still far from matching that scale. Exploration projects in Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Karnataka have begun, while Khanij Bidesh India Limited (KABIL) is seeking overseas tie-ups. But these are long-gestation efforts. Rising demand, sharper risks The pressure is only set to grow. India has set a target of 30 per cent EV penetration by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070. Each EV requires up to 2 kg of NdFeB magnets, and demand could cross 7,000 tonnes by 2030, according to the report. This demand goes beyond mobility — renewable energy, automation, and defence all compete for the same resources. The irony is clear: India's clean energy transition could become dependent on a resource it does not yet control. The roadmap offers direction, but unless mining, refining, and manufacturing capabilities are scaled up quickly, India risks swapping one form of energy dependence for another. GST 2.0 to treat more than rate cuts: Revamp to fix classification disputes, duty inversions- What officials say

GST (representative image) The proposed revamped goods and services tax (GST) 2.0, developed through extensive consultations, aims to be more comprehensive than just rate adjustments. Officials, quoted by Economic Times, indicate it will fundamentally restructure the eight-year-old indirect tax system. The changes focus on resolving classification conflicts, duty inversions and operational challenges to provide businesses with enhanced certainty and stability. The initiative includes enhanced coordination between state and central tax authorities regarding assessment, audit and investigation procedures. This aims to prevent businesses from facing repeated scrutiny for identical issues, according to officials. Officials confirmed that the GST Council will likely convene on September 18-19 to consider these proposed modifications, as reported by ET. The new structure will feature two primary tax rates - 5% and 18%. A senior official told ET that 'Rate rationalisation is one part of the proposal, but it goes much beyond that… This is an opportunity for a wider reform of the structure." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo The changes address issues arising from inconsistent court rulings on identical items, alongside challenges related to inverted duty structures and input tax credit. The revamp seeks to eliminate classification disputes arising from varying tax rates for similar products. Officials confirm that price variations will not influence tax categorisation for identical items. The proposal suggests eliminating the 12% and 28% slabs. Essential items, agricultural products and health-related goods are expected to attract 5% tax. A 40% special rate will apply to approximately six items, including sin goods and luxury vehicles. Officials confirm thorough examination of each item and associated issues. The proposal has been forwarded to the GST Council's group of ministers (GoM) for rate rationalisation, who will review it shortly before presenting recommendations to the Council. 'We have examined each item and issues around it,' a second official said, adding. 'The idea was to look ahead and not how it was done in the past, line by line… It was an intensive and rigorous exercise. ' The Centre plans to discuss these proposals with states, anticipating positive effects on domestic consumption and growth. Officials are working towards implementing changes before the festive season.
