A neighbourhood-led recycling centre in Iskandar Puteri is quietly making an impact, having collected nearly 20 tonnes of recyclable materials since it was launched almost four years ago.
The Community Recycling Centre under Impian Utara 6B Residents Association (Perita) has become a key part of daily life for Taman Impian Emas residents, offering a convenient way to manage waste and contribute to sustainability.
Its recycling committee chairperson Muhammad Imran Ismail said the centre was part of a wider movement to empower residents to manage recyclable waste at a time that suited them.
Established in October 2021 through funding from the Iskandar Puteri Low Carbon Community Grant 1.0, the centre started with regular awareness campaigns to get residents on board with the idea of sorting recyclables at home before disposal.
'The initiative is guided by local academics who also reside in the area, forming a close-knit partnership with Perita,' he said.
Muhammad Imran said the recycling centre had collected 19,967kg of recyclable items, including paper, aluminium cans, glass bottles, plastics and e-waste.
He said this had generated an income of RM9,577, which was used to support centre operations and community programmes in the area.
In addition, he said the centre had collected 660 litres of used cooking oil, equivalent to RM1,077.
'Community response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many residents requesting expanded facilities, such as specific stations for electronic waste and workshops for upcycling old items into useful products,' he added.
Muhammad Imran said based on its records, paper-based materials accounted for 59.4% of all items collected, making it the top category.
He said this included boxes, newspapers, coloured paper, and books while plastic accounted for 13%, glass bottles 10%, scrap metal 7.6%, e-waste 6.6% and used cooking oil 3.4%.
'Revenue from recycling is primarily used to cover operational costs and maintenance of the centre.
'Any surplus funds are channelled into the Perita community fund, which benefits all residents.
'While there is no fixed allocation for the proceeds, the funds have allowed us to organise community events like Malaysia Day and the Mid-Autumn Festival,' he said.
Muhammad Imran said these events helped to strengthen neighbourhood bonds while promoting sustainability and collective responsibility.
He said the association planned to explore more upcycling workshops and expand recycling categories in response to residents' feedback and growing environmental awareness.

Strengthening TVET reforms with commission set-up
MELAKA: A proposal to set up a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) commission is being mulled, in line with the broader TVET reform agenda, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said the recommendation emerged from impressive achievements under the National TVET Council chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, including a notable rise in student participation. 'I appreciate the council's work and as someone monitoring progress first-hand, there are proposals worth considering, among them establishing a commission for TVET. 'We shall assess how swiftly this can be implemented given current developments,' he said when launching the National TVET Day 2025 celebration. 'With the number of students and types of training increasing, I will look into whether current facilities are adequate and how to create synergy between government-linked companies, private sector players and existing TVET institutions.' The Prime Minister also underscored TVET's pivotal role in creating a skilled workforce capable of meeting future industrial needs. He said TVET graduates deserve a better starting salary, reflecting their skills and strong employability. 'Previously, we set the minimum wage at RM1,700. But for TVET fields with employment rates of up to 98%, such a salary is inadequate. 'We aim to increase the starting pay to RM3,000 where feasible,' he said, adding the adjustment would reflect deserved recognition by multinational and local companies. Anwar also said an additional RM40mil has been announced for the National TVET Council, along with RM10mil in aid for Melaka's TVET entrepreneurship initiatives. 'It is crucial for students to seize this opportunity to contribute to national development. 'Unlike many of our neighbours, Malaysia is one of the few nations that provides such strong support, financial and otherwise, for TVET students,' said the Prime Minister. The three-day National TVET Day includes nine sectoral exhibitions ranging from transportation, aerospace and electronics to agriculture, construction and services, with over 60 employers offering some 5,000 job opportunities.

LHDN receives 328 million e-invoices from nearly 35,000 taxpayers since August 2024
GEORGE TOWN: The Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) has received 328 million e-invoices from taxpayers as of yesterday, since the system was launched in August 2024. LHDN tax operations department director (e-Invoice division) Dr Rasyidah Che Rosli said nearly 35,000 taxpayers had submitted e-invoices, including many who had adopted the system voluntarily ahead of their respective mandatory phases. "This is a positive response from taxpayers under the first phase, as well as those in the second and third phases who have implemented e-invoicing voluntarily. "The digital records via the e-Invoice system help prevent the loss or misplacement of documentation and will, in future, be integrated directly into taxpayers' return forms for greater efficiency and accuracy," she told reporters at the CTOS SME Biz Day 2025 Penang, held at the Setia Spice Convention Centre here today. The event was officiated by Penang Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh Deo, and was attended by more than 1,300 participants, including government representatives, industry experts and corporate leaders. Meanwhile, Rasyidah said LHDN had granted an interim six-month relaxation period for each implementation phase involving taxpayers who are issuing consolidated e-invoices. She said the board was also supporting taxpayers during the transition by providing guidelines and frequently asked questions on its e-Invoice microsite. "LHDN also provides a transmission mechanism through an application programming interface (API) integrated with MyInvois, which allows taxpayers to either develop their own system or use the services of technology providers," she added. Taxpayers may also submit their e-invoices via the MyInvois portal free of charge, and are encouraged to refer to the LHDN e-Invoice microsite for further guidance. The e-Invoice system was implemented on Aug 1, 2024, for companies with annual sales exceeding RM100 million. The second phase began on Jan 1, 2025, for companies with annual sales between RM25 million and RM100 million. On June 5, LHDN announced that taxpayers with income or annual sales below RM500,000 would be exempted from the e-Invoice requirement for now. Implementation has been postponed to Jan 1, 2026, for those with earnings between RM1 million and RM5 million, while those with income up to RM1 million will begin on July 1, 2026.

Govt Mulls Setting Up TVET Commission
The government is actively considering the establishment of a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Commission to support the sector's rapid development and reforms. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the matter will be assessed promptly given the surge in student enrolment and the expanding range of training programmes. 'I appreciate the role of the TVET Council, but as those closely monitoring the sector's development, we must consider proposals such as establishing a dedicated commission for TVET, and we will assess this as swiftly as possible in response to the sector's evolving needs,' he said. Anwar added that he and the Ministry of Finance will evaluate the adequacy of current facilities and explore better synergy among government-linked companies, private players, and existing TVET institutions. The Prime Minister also stressed the need for improved starting salaries for TVET graduates, reflecting their strong employability rate. 'Previously, we set the minimum wage at RM1,700. But if a group like TVET graduates achieves up to 98 per cent employability, RM1,700 is not enough. For TVET graduates, if possible, we want to raise the starting salary to as much as RM3,000,' he said. To support the ongoing development of the sector, Anwar announced an additional RM40 million allocation for the National TVET Council, along with RM10 million specifically for Melaka to strengthen TVET entrepreneurship initiatives. The announcement was made during the launch of National TVET Day 2025 at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) in Ayer Keroh. Present at the event were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and several other federal and state leaders. Related
