That Morning Cough You Keep Ignoring Could Be Lung Cancer: Here's When To See A Doctor

If your morning cough has lasted more than 2–3 weeks, it could be an early warning sign of lung cancer, not just pollution or age.
A persistent morning cough is often brushed off as something harmless, pollution, smoking, a dusty bedroom fan, or simply a part of getting older. However, ignoring this symptom could mean overlooking the early signs of a serious underlying condition, including lung cancer.
Every year, 1st August is observed as World Lung Cancer Day, a reminder to prioritize lung health and the early detection of warning signs. Among these, the chronic morning cough stands out as one of the most overlooked symptoms. Many people tolerate it for weeks even months attributing it to environmental irritants or seasonal changes. But a cough that lasts more than 2–3 weeks, especially when accompanied by phlegm, hoarseness, chest discomfort, fatigue, or weight loss, should never be taken lightly.
Dr. Rajesh Kumar Gupta, Director, Yashoda Institute of Respiratory Medicine & Interventional Pulmonology, says, 'We often see patients who delay seeking help until their condition has significantly progressed. This delay can be tragic when it comes to lung cancer, one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. In India, the burden is growing due to rising pollution levels, smoking, and indoor exposure to biomass fuels used in cooking. What makes lung cancer particularly dangerous is that most cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, when treatment becomes more complex and outcomes less favourable."
Cough lasting more than 3 weeks
Coughing up blood
Chest pain or breathlessness
Persistent fatigue or voice changes
Sudden, unexplained weight loss
Importantly, non-smokers are not immune. Urban residents constantly exposed to high levels of air pollution and indoor pollutants are also at risk.
Take your morning cough seriously. If it's lingering or worsening, consult a pulmonologist. A simple chest X-ray or CT scan could provide critical insight into your lung health.

Maharashtra Woman Dies In Ambulance Caught In Massive NH-48 Traffic Jam: 'Screamed In Pain'

Chhaya Purav suffered a serious injury and was referred to a Mumbai hospital. However, the ambulance got stuck in a traffic jam on NH-48, after which she succumbed to her injuries. A woman died in an ambulance while on her way to a Mumbai hospital after a critical injury, as the vehicle was stuck in a massive traffic jam on National Highway-48. The woman, identified as Chhaya Purav, had suffered a critical injury in Maharashtra's Palghar district. On July 31, Purav was injured when a tree branch fell on her near her residence in Palghar's Madhukar Nagar, suffering injuries to her ribs, shoulders and head. A local hospital referred her to the Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai, which is around 100 km from Palghar, reported NDTV. The woman was administered anaesthesia, and her husband was seated next to her as the ambulance began its journey to Mumbai at around 3 pm. However, it got stuck in a massive traffic jam on NH-48. The journey from Palghar to Mumbai usually takes 2.5 hours. However, due to the traffic jam, the ambulance only managed to cover half of the distance in three hours. Meanwhile, the anaesthesia's effect began to weaken, and Purav began to experience excruciating pain. 'The road was full of potholes and that put her in so much pain. She was screaming in pain and crying. She begged to take her to a hospital at the earliest. But we were stuck, vehicles were driven from the wrong side, making the traffic jam worse," Purav's shocked husband, Kaushik, told NDTV. At around 7 pm, the ambulance drove into the Orbit Hospital in Mira Road, about 30 km away from the Hinduja hospital so that Purav could get immediate attention, but it was too late at this point as doctors declared her dead. The doctors told Kaushik that Purav could have been saved if she reached the hospital just 30 minutes earlier. 'I saw her suffering in unbearable pain for four hours," he said, highlighting the traffic crisis that has plagued Mumbai for years. Mumbaikars on a daily basis face traffic congestion, due to poorly maintained roads, ongoing construction projects, lack of parking space and unregulated driving behaviour. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'Health, Education Now Commercialised, Beyond Reach Of Common People': RSS Chief Bhagwat

Bhagwat said good health and education were once driven by the spirit of service, but are now heavily commercialised and beyond the reach of common people. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday lamented that quality health and education, which were once considered as a service to society, are now heavily commercialised and beyond the reach of the common people. 'Good health and education are extremely important and were earlier considered as 'seva' (service), but now both are beyond the reach of common people, both have been commercialised. They are neither affordable nor accessible," he said at an event in Indore. Bhagwat further stressed the need for affordable and accessible healthcare, saying that good cancer care was available in only 8-10 Indian cities. He also said that while the West applies uniform healthcare standards across the world, Indian medicine treats patients as per individual needs. view comments First Published: August 10, 2025, 19:28 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
