Amendments to Uttarakhand anti-conversion law tabled in assembly
Gairsain, Aug 19 (PTI) The amendments to the anti-conversion law to make it harsher, with stringent provisions like punishment up to life imprisonment and heavy fines, was introduced in the state assembly on Tuesday.
The Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Bill-2025 provides for a maximum punishment of life imprisonment and a heavy fine of up to Rs 10 lakh for forced conversion.
At present, there is a provision of maximum 10 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000.
More stringent provisions were being added to the existing law to stop conversion done through fraud, inducement or pressure, according to the government.
The definition of inducement has been expanded in the bill to include gifts, cash/goods benefits, employment, free education, promise of marriage, hurting religious faith or glorifying another religion, categorising all of them as crime.
It makes punishable the acts like promoting or inciting conversion through social media, messaging app or any online medium.
under the bill, there is a provision in the bill for three to 10 years imprisonment for general violation, five to 14 years in cases related to sensitive class and 20 years to life imprisonment in serious cases and heavy fines.
This is the second amendment to the anti-conversion law that has been in force since 2018. The first amendment to the Act was made in 2022. PTI DPT SKY SKY

New Delhi: A major uproar broke out in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday after Opposition MPs, including members of the Trinamool Congress, tore and hurled copies of three key bills towards Union Home Minister Amit Shah while he was introducing them. The BJP has strongly condemned the incident, calling it a 'shameful act that would bring disgrace to any civilised society.' BJP MP and actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut said the Opposition's conduct had crossed all limits of parliamentary propriety. 'What we witnessed in Parliament today is something that would bring shame to any civilised society. When our Home Minister Amit Shah was proposing a bill, Opposition leaders tried to snatch away his microphone. Worse still, they tore the bill and threw it at his face. Some even came with stones and hurled them. But our party showed patience,' she added. BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi termed the behaviour 'truly unfortunate.' 'Opposition members created a ruckus from their seats and then crossed every line of decorum. Several women MPs and TMC members attempted to attack the Home Minister. They tore copies of the bill and hurled them in his direction. This was not dissent—it was an attack,' she said. BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj also described the scenes as 'nothing less than the murder of democracy.' 'Trinamool Congress MPs, particularly one of their women MPs, tried to snatch the microphone, tore pages, and threw them in the House. This act has embarrassed the voters, the public, and the very spirit of democracy. The BJP strongly condemns such behaviour," she told IANS. BJP leader Annpurna Devi also denounced the incident. 'The entire country is watching. The conduct displayed today, especially by Trinamool Congress members, was extremely inappropriate. Even senior and respected MPs behaved in this unruly manner when the Home Minister was presenting the Bill. The Opposition claims ruling party MPs also attacked them, but that is false. We were only standing, not attacking. What they did was against every norm of parliamentary decorum,' she said. The chaos unfolded as Union Home Minister Amit Shah tabled the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and amendments to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. The first bill seeks automatic removal of Prime Ministers, Chief Ministers, and Union Ministers facing corruption or serious criminal charges if held for 30 consecutive days. Opposition MPs strongly opposed the move, tearing copies of the bills and shouting slogans. Amid the ruckus, Amit Shah proposed that the bills be referred to a Joint Committee of Parliament for further examination.

Odisha CM Majhi thanks PM Modi for approval of Capital Region Ring Road project
Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, along with members of his Council of Ministers and legislators, on Wednesday extended gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for approving the Capital Region Ring Road (CRRR) project at a ceremony held at the State Guest House here. The CRRR will be a 111-km six-lane road project with an estimated cost of Rs 8,342 crore. The project is expected not only to ease traffic flow but also boost Bhubaneswar's development as a textile and software hub, thereby strengthening Odisha's economic prospects. Speaking at the ceremony, Chief Minister Majhi said: "I express my heartfelt thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for granting approval to the Capital Region Ring Road project. This transformative project will ensure smoother connectivity, accelerate industrial growth, and open new avenues for trade and investment in Odisha." During the event, it was also highlighted that global steel major POSCO, which had earlier exited the state due to massive protest, is returning to Odisha with the support of the 'double engine government'. The company in a joint venture with a leading group is set to establish a mega steel plant in Keonjhar district with an investment of over Rs 50,000 crore. Initially, the plant will have a capacity of 6 million tonnes, which will later be scaled up to 12 million tonnes. Keonjhar has been chosen as the site due to its strong infrastructure facilities including road, air, rail, water, and power connectivity. To attract more investments, the Odisha government has been conducting roadshows in Delhi, Mumbai, and Singapore, and is planning another in Hyderabad soon. With its attractive incentive package and investor-friendly industrial policy, Odisha is positioning itself as a preferred destination for national and international investors. CM Majhi also praised the approval of two semiconductors in Bhubaneswar during the last meeting of the Union Cabinet.

Constitution amendment Bill new experiment in neo-fascist politics: Pinarayi
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has slammed the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025 calling it a 'new experiment in neo-fascist politics' and a Sangh Parivar stratagem for persecuting non-Bharatiya Janata Party State governments in the country. The Bill, presented in the Lok Sabha, can only be viewed as a political decision of the BJP government loaded with this intention and a continuation of the politics of persecution using Central investigation agencies practised by it, Mr. Vijayan said on Wednesday. For some time now, attempts have been on to destabilise State governments using Central investigation agencies. There are also instances of Chief Ministers and Ministers holding constitutional positions being imprisoned. The haste shown in pushing through the Bill arises from the disgruntlement of having failed to ensure their resignation, Mr. Vijayan said. Mr. Vijayan described the Bill as a new experiment of neo-fascist politics where individuals are imprisoned on trumped-up charges and then disqualified using it as a justification. The Chief Minister called for a united front against the anti-democratic stance of the Sangh Parivar. The Union government is trying to undermine State governments trying to wrest the constitutional rights of the State governments and establish that the Governor has veto powers over State legislatures.
