Bill Gates' secret ultra-luxury yacht to list for $645M — and he's never set foot aboard

New York Post3 days ago
A 390-foot superyacht designed to run entirely on liquid hydrogen is poised to make waves at the upcoming Monaco Yacht Show — where it will be listed for sale with a whopping $645 million price tag.
Though never publicly confirmed by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, the vessel — named 'Breakthrough' and also known as 'Project 821' — has long been linked to the billionaire.
Gates, however, has never actually set foot aboard the yacht, according to Luxury Launches.

Built by Dutch shipyard Feadship and designed by RWD, the seven-deck vessel took five years to complete and will be the largest yacht on display at the show.

The listing is being handled by yacht brokerage Edmiston.
7 Dubbed 'Breakthrough,' the ultra-luxury vessel boasts a beach club-style infinity pool, a basketball court, a private hospital, a cinema, multiple libraries and hot tubs, along with accommodations for 30 guests across 15 cabins and 43 crew.
Edmiston
'This is the one that will change it all,' Jamie Edmiston, the firm's chief executive said in a press release. 'The brief was to build the greenest and most environmentally advanced yacht ever built, without compromise. It was a huge challenge, but one that the team has embraced and delivered on.'
What sets Breakthrough apart is its fuel system: a next-generation hydrogen fuel cell platform that allows the vessel to operate entirely off compressed liquid hydrogen stored below deck at minus 253 degrees Celsius.

The ship's power plant also recycles heat generated during conversion to warm pools, steam rooms, towel bars and guest-room floors.
For voyages where hydrogen is unavailable, a secondary biofuel system supplies electricity while reducing emissions by 90%.

7 Designed by RWD and built by Feadship over five years, Breakthrough runs primarily on liquid hydrogen stored at -253°C, making it the world's first hydrogen-fueled 'net zero' yacht, with biofuel backup cutting emissions by 90%.

'Fuel cells will play an important role for yachts in the years to come,' Jan-Bart Verkuyl, a director at Feadship said, citing their 'superior efficiency, low particle emissions and low noise radiation.'
Beyond its green credentials, the yacht delivers the kind of luxury one might expect at this price point.
The interior is fitted with a blend of leathers, marble, limed oak and rattan, intended to evoke a coastal resort aesthetic.
There's a full-size basketball court, a cinema, several hot tubs and a private hospital onboard.
7 Despite the speculation and extensive investment, Gates has reportedly never set foot aboard.

The owner's quarters span four private floors and include two bedrooms, twin bathrooms, dressing rooms, two offices — each with a fireplace — a gym, a pantry and a living room.
'It creates, in essence, a secluded four-level townhouse-by-the sea within the much larger yacht,' reads the listing.
Discreet balconies slide out from the hull at the touch of a button, their floors rising to sit flush with the yacht's interior rooms.

Edmiston notes that 'at each deck level, there are inviting private lifestyle destinations to savor,' such as a 'coffee corner and games niche,' 'a library on the main deck' and 'a private dining room with a sea terrace.'

In total, Breakthrough can accommodate 30 guests and 43 crew members.

The owner's deck alone sits 121 feet above the waterline.
While Gates has neither confirmed nor denied his involvement with the project, industry insiders say the yacht was built to his specifications.
Canadian billionaire Patrick Dovigi, CEO of Green For Life Environmental, is reportedly in line to acquire it.

Bill Gates says AI is moving at a speed that ‘surprises' even him—and he says the experts can't tell if it'll replace humans in one year or ten

Billionaire cofounder Bill Gates says AI is moving at a speed that 'surprises' even him, as workers and employers are preparing for how the technology will impact their jobs. Leaders are already saying it's just as good as workers, and is taking more jobs than are being created. Job seekers are scrambling to figure out when AI will come for their jobs—but even the experts can't agree on a timeline. Now, Bill Gates is sounding the alarm: It could all happen so fast, workers won't even have time to catch up. 'The question is, has it come so fast that you don't have time to adjust to it?' Bill Gates just said in an interview with CNN. The Microsoft cofounder noted that AI is already capable of taking over administrative roles like telesales, but it's still falling short when it comes to more complex tasks—and even he's dumbfounded by just how quickly it's closing the gap. 'It's improving at a rate that surprises me,' the tech pioneer, worth $122 billion, said in the interview, while pointing to its deep research capability as an example. 'A few times a day, I take some complex question, and just for fun, I see AI does an awfully good job gathering all the materials, and summarizing what I need to know.' In just a few years, the technology has gone from writing emails to generating functional code. That's why no one can pin down when exactly the tipping point will come, Gates added. 'AI today can replace human work, the most complex coding tasks, [but] it's not able to do [it] yet. And people in the field disagree: is that within the next year or two, or is it more like ten years away?' Tech leaders agree that AI will be as good as human workers Fellow business leaders have been candid that AI will be just as capable as, or even more advanced than, most human workers in the next few years. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei predicted that up to 50% of entry-level white collar jobs could be replaced by AI within 5 years. 'Most of them are unaware that this is about to happen,' Amodei warned in an interview with Axios. 'It sounds crazy, and people just don't believe it.' Amazon CEO Andy Jassy also told employees that within the next few years, AI would reduce some corporate roles, like customer service representatives and software developers. And over at Meta, its CEO Mark Zuckerberg is already getting started on automating some of his employees' jobs—the tech billionaire announced that the company is building an 'AI engineer' to help with coding tasks. That shift isn't unique to just tech roles. IBM cut around 8,000 jobs this May in HR and other departments, as the tools take over routine administrative tasks. Instead, the company is hiring more engineers and salespeople, signaling a transition to more roles that require creativity and complex decision-making. AI is improving productivity, Bill Gates says As more companies pull back on hiring and training early job seekers, they are also shrinking the talent pool of future leaders. The jobs that have historically served as stepping stones for entry-level workers are under threat. With recent college grads struggling to land entry-level jobs, Gates weighed in on growing fears that AI is taking opportunities from young workers. He argued that rising productivity should free people's time to do more of the other things they enjoy—from side hustles to vacations. 'When you improve productivity, you can make more [jobs],' Gates said. 'It means you can free up these people to have smaller class sizes or have longer vacations or help to do more, so it's not a bad thing.' New research echoes that already, 4 in 10 say it has provided better work-life balance, reduced stress, and improved decision-making. This story was originally featured on Solve the daily Crossword

Ford Says It's Made an EV Breakthrough—So Are Cheaper EVs Coming?

Ford will have a "Model T moment" when it announces a new EV strategy next month, according to CEO Jim Farley. The automaker is hosting an event on August 11, where Farley says the company will announce plans for a "breakthrough" EV and EV platform. According to Farley, the new strategy will help Ford position itself against competition from Chinese automakers. Anyone know what year it is? According to Ford CEO Jim Farley, it might be 1908 again, as the Blue Oval is about to have another "Model T moment." Speaking on an earnings call on July 30, Farley revealed to investors that the company is planning to announce a new EV strategy in August, which will help position the brand against competition from Chinese automakers. Ford "On Aug. 11, that will be a big day for all of us at Ford," Farley said on the call. "We will be in Kentucky to share more about our plans to design and build a breakthrough electric vehicle and a platform in the U.S. This is a Model-T moment for us at Ford. A chance to bring a new family of vehicles to the world that offer incredible technology, efficiency, space, and features." So, in addition to announcing its next electric offering, Ford is also planning to lay out its entire EV strategy, including a new electric platform. Reporting from last year confirmed that Ford was using a small "skunkworks" team to launch a flexible new EV platform capable of building several vehicles "at volume." While the company wouldn't pinpoint exactly what kinds of vehicles those would be, it did confirm that the new platform's focus would be on smaller, low-cost, and profitable vehicles. Specifically, the new models will be targeting competition from Chinese automakers, which Farley has been vocal about in the past. Speaking on a podcast in October 2024, Farley confirmed he was daily driving a Xiaomi SU7, and that he didn't want to give it up—making him realize that Ford would need to make drastic changes to compete. Jack Fitzgerald Associate News Editor Jack Fitzgerald's love for cars stems from his as yet unshakable addiction to Formula 1. After a brief stint as a detailer for a local dealership group in college, he knew he needed a more permanent way to drive all the new cars he couldn't afford and decided to pursue a career in auto writing. By hounding his college professors at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he was able to travel Wisconsin seeking out stories in the auto world before landing his dream job at Car and Driver. His new goal is to delay the inevitable demise of his 2010 Volkswagen Golf. Read full bio
