New Volkswagens now come with a service plan
Volkswagen New Zealand has announced a new Service Plan offering, available across its range of vehicles. This new plan covers the first three scheduled services of a vehicle and is included within the price of the vehicle. Previously VW offered service plans as a cost option at time of purchase.
For buyers of a passenger vehicle, the Service Plan covers the first three years or 45,000km of ownership from the date of delivery, coinciding with 15,000km, 12 month service schedules.

For Amarok buyers, the deal covers the first three scheduled services within three years or 60,000km, whichever occurs first. New Caddy and Multivan petrol or PHEV models have the first three services covered within three years or 45,000km, and all other new Volkswagen Commercial diesel models are covered for the first three scheduled services (within six years or 90,000km).
'This new offer is about giving customers one less thing to think about when they purchase one of our vehicles,' says Chanelle McDonald, General Manager Passenger Vehicles at Volkswagen New Zealand. 'In a world that doesn't slow down we know peace of mind is invaluable, and this is another way we're helping future owners get more out of their Volkswagens – and their time.'
The service plan is also transferable if you sell within the three year period.

Skoda's former Favorit gets a modern makeover
Skoda has reimagined the Favorit as a modern electric car. The designer used the original's Bertone-penned lines as inspiration for new Modern Solid styling. Conceived by designer Ljudmil Slavov in his own time, the project aimed to retain the feel of the original without going too retro. The '87 Favorit was developed behind the iron curtain before VW took ownership. 'I wanted to update the original idea for today' with some SUV cues, he said. 'A higher body structure allows for better battery placement in the floor'. Unusual features include an asymmetrical badge, a single door handle embedded into the body for both the front and rear, and simple four-spoke wheels. The lack of a grille betrays the Favorit's electric powertrain. There's no gloss-black Tech Deck face here. Instead Slavov decided to 'evolve and elevate' the 'already minimalistic' features of the Favorit. He commented that this 'was very challenging'. It took many sketches and much dialogue with colleagues, said Slavov. The shapes of the front and rear lights are retained from the original, comprising LED running lights while covers hide the headlamps. The accents in the Skoda wordmarks front and rear are also illuminated. The simple shape of the wheel inners means they aren't the focal point here. Seat headrests reference the open-centred items on the original Favorit. Brown leather upholstery references the fashion of the late 1980s. Slavov also penned a rally version inspired by the Favorit that found success in the WRC F2 class during the early 1990s. This has a lower, wider stance and unpainted plastic bumpers, along with a white, green and red livery. It also has a spoiler, diffuser and roll cage. For the moment, there are no plans to put either into production.

Next VW Golf GTI will be electric and monstering
The all-electric Volkswagen ID Golf GTI is evidently in the development phase, and VW CEO Thomas Schäfer said that it will be a monster. This isn't the ID Golf GTI but the last example before the next generation. Based on the VW Group's all-new SSP architecture, this halo car is important for the brand. Which is why the R&D team is getting on the job early to make sure the first electric GTI is a success. It is due before the end of the decade and Schäfer said he is 'very happy with the progress. It's cool. It has to be exciting, it has to be authentic. If we bring a GTI, it has to be a [true] GTI.' The headline news is that it will follow in the footsteps of its predecessors and retain its front-wheel drive status. That's in spite of the the ID.3 GTX having a 240kW motor driving the rear wheels. Expect the e-GTI to come with much more power than the outgoing petrol GTI (Golf VIII), because with an electric motor it is easier to control the amount of torque going to each front wheel. The first electric Golf R will follow and will have even more power than the GTI on account of its AWD status. Before both of these, however, Volkswagen will debut the ID.2 GTI which has already been shown in concept form (above). Schäfer has already driven the upcoming ID.2 GTI prototype, due out next year. Of that experience, he commented: 'It's mind blowing.' He said that the feel, handling and even the sound are inspiring. 'It can be done' he suggested. He added that it even has a drift mode. Digital work on the new Golf package is underway before any builds are undertaken. 'We know what the vehicle looks like and [can] sit virtually in the vehicle,' said Schäfer. 'The dimensions of the platform and the vehicle are clear, though it's not [fine-tuned] to the last design detail.' This is the current Golf GTI. The SSP underpinnings will be a key for the Volkswagen Group, with all the electric cars from the group tapping into the hardware and software modules it introduces. 'It's going to be really scalable,' Schäfer said. The first Golf GTI made 80kW from its 1.6-litre engine. Expect at least 220kW from the ID Golf GTI arriving a little over a half century later.
