"Harry Potter" Actress Miriam Margolyes Reveals She Doesn't Have Much Longer to Live
Yara Sameh 'Harry Potter' star Miriam Margolyes sadly shared that she doesn't have much longer to live due to a debilitating health condition. The actress — who portrayed beloved Professor Sprout in the popular fantasy franchise — made the revelation while speaking to the Times about her retirement from the big screen. 'When you know that you haven't got long to live — and I'm probably going to die within the next five or six years, if not before — I'm loath to leave behind performing,' Margolyes said. 'It's such a joy. I yearn to play roles that don't confine me to wheelchairs, but I'm just not strong enough.' The 'Age of Innocence' star, 84, first got candid about her health woes during an interview on the 'Table Manners' podcast in 2023. At the time, she admitted to undergoing heart surgery, saying, 'I've got a cow's heart now.' 'Well, not the whole heart. I've had an aortic valve replaced by a cow's aortic valve,' Margolyes continued. 'I don't know how common it is. I'd never heard of that operation. But it saves you from having open heart surgery, which would be infinitely more invasive.' At the time, Margolyes also told British Vogue that she was no longer afraid of death. 'When you're young, you never think about death. You just think about your next f—k basically. I think about death a lot,' she quipped. 'You can't help but be aware that the amount of time ahead is less than the time before you,'. 'I'm still ducking and diving. I'm still open to new experiences. I'm just very conscious that there is no light at the end of the tunnel," Margolyes added. She openly shared that her biggest concern was running out of money before she passed away. In 2024, Margolyes announced she was battling spinal stenosis and couldn't walk anymore. 'I'm registered disabled. I use all kinds of assistance,' she told Closer Magazine. HBO's "Harry Potter" Series: A Guide to Who's Heading to Hogwarts
Yara Sameh It's almost time for a whole new generation of wizards and witches to get into Hogwarts. 'Harry Potter,' the beloved fantasy book series from author J.K. Rowling that was turned into a blockbuster film franchise, is coming to HBO as a new TV series. Each of the seven books in the series, 'Sorcerer's Stone,' 'Chamber of Secrets,' 'Prisoner of Azkaban,' 'Goblet of Fire,' 'Order of the Phoenix,' 'Half-Blood Prince' and 'Deathly Hallows,' will each be adapted into one season of TV. In May 2025, the trio of lead roles had finally been unveiled: Dominic McLaughlin will play the role of Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton will play Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will play Ron Weasley. The three are largely newcomers with few prior acting credits. McLaughlin acted in 'Grow,' a comedy on Sky with Nick Frost and Golda Rosheuvel, Stanton starred as Matilda in the musical of the same name in the West End, and Stout had no prior acting credits. HBO auditioned more than 32,000 children for the lead role of Harry Potter, famously originated by Daniel Radcliffe. Executive producer Mark Mylod said that the casting team had been reviewing between 500 and 1,000 audition tapes per day. 'After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron. The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It's been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there,' said showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer and director Mark Mylod in a statement revealing the three actors. Other series regulars include 'Conclave' star John Lithgow as Album Dumbledore, 'I May Destroy You' breakout star Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, 'Tumbleweeds' Oscar nominee Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall and 'Shaun of the Dead' comedian Nick Frost as Hagrid. Meanwhile, Paul Whitehouse (Tom Stoppard's 'Leopoldstadt,' Rupert Goold's 'Patriots') and Luke Thallon ('The Fast Show,' 'Harry & Paul') take on recurring roles as Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch and Defense Against the Dark Arts professor Quirinus Quirrell, respectively. The 'Harry Potter' series is written and executive produced by Gardiner, who also serves as showrunner. Mylod will executive produce and direct multiple episodes of the series for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. The series is executive produced by author J.K.
