Syria arms depot blasts kill 12, wounds more than 100
"Multiple blasts at a weapons and ammunition warehouse belonging to the Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP) killed at least 12 people and wounded more than 100 in Maaret Misrin, in northern Idlib province," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Those killed included a woman and a child, said the Britain-based monitor, which relies on a network of sources on the ground.
The TIP is a jihadist group active in the Idlib region made up of Uighur fighters who joined the Syrian civil war to fight against former president Bashar al-Assad.
Syria's health ministry had reported four deaths and 116 wounded in the blasts, in a preliminary toll published by the official news agency SANA.
Authorities did not immediately say what may have caused the explosions.
AFP images showed a huge plume of white smoke over the town, where several children were among the injured.

They caused a fire in an areas where Iranian-built Shahed drones -- relied on by Russia to attack Ukraine -- were stored, the SBU said. It said the strikes also hit a company, Elektropribor, in Russia's southern Penza region, which it said "works for the Russian military-industrial complex", making military digital networks, aviation devices, armoured vehicles and ships. The governor for the Penza region, Oleg Melnichenko, said on Telegram that one woman had been killed and two other people were wounded in that attack. Russia's defence ministry said its air-defence systems had destroyed 112 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory -- 34 over the Rostov region -- in a nearly nine-hour period, from Friday night to Saturday morning. An elderly man was killed inside a house that caught fire due to falling drone debris in the Samara region, governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev posted on Telegram. In the Rostov region, a guard at an industrial facility was killed after a drone attack and a fire in one of the site's buildings, acting Rostov governor Yuri Sliusar said. "The military repelled a massive air attack during the night," destroying drones over seven districts, Sliusar posted on Telegram. Heavy use of drones Ukraine has regularly used drones to hit targets inside Russia as it fights back against Moscow's full-scale invasion, launched in February 2022. Russia, too, has increasingly deployed the unmanned aerial devices as part of its offensive. An AFP analysis published on Friday showed that Russia's forces in July launched an unprecedented number of drones, 6,297 of them. The figure included decoy drones sent into Ukraine's skies in efforts to saturate the country's air-defence systems. In Ukraine's central-eastern Dnipropetrovsk region, Russian drone attacks Friday night wounded three people, governor Sergiy Lysak wrote on Telegram. Several buildings, homes and cars were damaged, he said. Russian forces have claimed advances in Dnipropetrovsk, recently announcing the capture of two villages there, part of Moscow's accelerated capture of territory in July, according to AFP's analysis of data from the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW). Kyiv denies any Russian presence in the Dnipropetrovsk area. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has consistently rejected calls for a ceasefire in the more than three-year conflict, said Friday that he wanted peace but that his demands for ending Moscow's military offensive were "unchanged". Those demands include that Ukraine abandon territory and end ambitions to join NATO. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, meanwhile, said only Putin could end the war and renewed his call for a meeting between the two leaders. "The United States has proposed this. Ukraine has supported it. What is needed is Russia's readiness," he wrote on X.

ED makes first arrest in loan fraud case linked to Anil Ambani
New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) late Friday evening arrested the managing director of an Odisha-based company - its first arrest in an alleged bank loan fraud case involving the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG). Partha Sarathi Biswal, MD of Biswal Tradelink Pvt Ltd (BTPL), is accused of arranging a fake bank guarantee of ₹68 crore for an ADAG firm. According to the ED, its investigation has revealed that BTPL fraudulently arranged and submitted the fake bank guarantee along with forged SBI endorsements and fabricated confirmations on behalf of Reliance Nu Bess Ltd for a tender floated by Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd (SECI). For this, BTPL received ₹5.40 crore from Reliance Nu Bess' parent, Reliance Power Ltd, ED has ED carried out searches against Biswal Tradelink on Friday. Agency sources said the evidence gathered by ED confirmed the use of fake documents in the name of certain banks and fake email IDs in the name of SBI."Probe reveals BTPL, a small company incorporated in 2019, maintained multiple undisclosed bank accounts and carried out transactions disproportionate to its declared turnover. Many violations of the Companies Act are found," the probe agency said in a news release on Saturday. Statutory records such as books of accounts and shareholders' registers were not found at the registered address, it said, adding: " Dummy directors are found to be used just to sign the documents."At least seven undisclosed bank accounts of the company were found and "proceeds of crime, of crores of rupees, have been traced to these accounts", it claimed. Biswal was produced before a Delhi court, which sent him to ED's custody till August 6. ET was the first to report on Friday that the ED had summoned Anil Ambani for questioning in connection with its investigation into the ₹17,000 crore alleged loan fraud case. Ambani has been asked to appear before the agency on August 5. According to the Enforcement Directorat, Biswal Tradelink ran a racket that issued fake bank guarantees to business groups. As per the agency, the Delhi Police filed the first information report in the case based on a Reliance Nu Bess company, accusing Biswal Tradelink of cheating it by promising to arrange bank guarantees for a fee and then providing a fake bank guarantee. According to the ED, Reliance Nu Bess wrongly claimed that it was cheated. "Documentary evidence reveals that apparently the two parties acted in collusion. The directors of Biswal Tradelink were found to be previous directors of Reliance group," a senior official had told ET.A statement issued by the Reliance Group on Friday said: "The company and its subsidiaries acted bonafidely and have been a victim of fraud, forgery and cheating conspiracy. The company has made due disclosure on this to the stock exchanges on November 7, 2024," it further said "a criminal complaint in this regard has already been lodged with the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Delhi Police against the third party on October 16, 2024" and that the "due process of law will follow".

Turkiye starts supplying Azerbaijani gas to boost Syria's power output
Türkiye on Saturday (August 2, 2025) turned on a supply of natural gas from Azerbaijan to Syria, whose infrastructure was ravaged by civil war, with annual deliveries expected to reach up to two billion cubic metres. Syria's Islamist authorities, who toppled Bashar al-Assad in December, are seeking to rebuild the battered country where power cuts can last for more than 20 hours a day. Speaking at a ceremony attended by Syria's energy minister, Azerbaijan's Economy Minister and the head of Qatar's development fund, Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said the initiative would help normalise Syria. 'In the initial phase, up to two billion cubic metres of natural gas per year could be exported to Syria,' Mr. Bayraktar said at the ceremony in the southern province of Kilis near the Syrian border. Damascus has said the gas would be used to generate electricity. 'The gas will help activate a power plant with a capacity of around 1,200 megawatts, meeting the electricity needs of approximately five million households,' Mr. Bayraktar said. 'We will transport natural gas to Aleppo and from Aleppo to Homs. This will enable the power plants there to be put into operation in the near future,' he added. A first phase of the Qatari scheme to fund gas supplies for power generation in Syria rolled out in March via Jordan and provided 400 megawatts of electricity per day.
