Exclusive Interview: Reinier de Ridder talks Whittaker fight and Abu Dhabi comeback

What's On11-07-2025
There's something poetic about Reinier de Ridder's (RdR) return to Abu Dhabi. A decade ago, the Dutch dynamo clinched his first major title on the mats of the capital at the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu Jitsu Championship. Fast forward to 2025, and he's back, only this time, the gloves are off, the lights are brighter, and the stakes couldn't be higher.
On Saturday, July 26, de Ridder will step into the Octagon at UFC Fight Night in Abu Dhabi for his first-ever UFC main event, facing none other than former champion Robert Whittaker in what promises to be a middleweight blockbuster. But this moment? It's been years in the making.
'I've been grinding like crazy in Florida,' he tells What's On . 'I moved my family here for the year. All focus is on this fight. It's big it's Whittaker. It's the kind of opportunity you dream about.'
For fans who've followed RdR from his ONE Championship days to his recent knockout of Bo Nickal, the meteoric rise isn't exactly a shock. But even he's surprised by how fast things have moved since his UFC debut in November last year. 'They've given me every opportunity. I'm just trying to make the most of it.'
It's fitting that de Ridder's next defining moment will take place in Abu Dhabi. The city isn't just another venue, it's part of his origin story. 'It's always been special to me. That first big win was here. To be back now, headlining a UFC card? It feels full circle.'
His journey to MMA wasn't a straight path. After back-to-back frustrating Jiu Jitsu finals where opponents 'stalled for eight minutes', he knew he was done with the points game. 'I remember thinking, I'm never doing this again. I want to fight. I want to finish people.'
And that's exactly what he's been doing. De Ridder's last performance was a showstopper, a second-round TKO that's still making highlight reels. And if he can deliver something similar against Whittaker?
'If I can finish him early, do it spectacularly, I think I've got a real shot at the title,' he says. The name floating around? Dricus du Plessis, the current champ.
One thing's certain: de Ridder is no longer the grappler chasing points, he's the fighter chasing greatness. And fittingly, Abu Dhabi might just be where he claims it, just as he did over a decade ago when he stepped onto the mats at the Jiu Jitsu World Championship and 'faced off in the finals against a 130kg giant guy… I was able to throw him and choke him out eventually, so that was amazing already.'
This was his first time in Abu Dhabi, and we can all relate, there's something magical about arriving here for the first time. Like RdR, who hadn't travelled much before, 'it was different from Holland, my home. They picked me up in an Escalade, like a crazy expensive car at the time. I thought 'where did I end up with this Jiu Jitsu thing?'', he said. But are we even surprised? The UAE always does it big, and we love it.
Having won the championship, this was the moment everything changed. 'I beat everybody and got given an envelope with money and that was crazy for me, to be able to make money doing sports. It was very much a moment of me looking forward, like if I can do this for a couple more years and if this can be my job, it would be amazing.'
RdR also thanked UAE Warriors, especially Fouad Darwish, 'they really took a chance on me, giving me a fight there. They've really helped me out and I have a huge part of this last year of my career in UFC to thank them, so Abu Dhabi will always be very special to me.'
We asked RdR if he had a full day off in Abu Dhabi, how would he spend it? 'Lay down, chill at the beach, get a lot of food, I like Indian food and go to the desert. I've never done sandboarding there,' he laughs.
RdR also said that UFC in Abu Dhabi really became a spotlight moment during Covid, when it was the only venue in the world hosting fights. 'Their way of putting the fighters first is just really special, the way they treat their athletes is something different.'
He wrapped up our interview with a message to his UAE fans: 'Hopefully you guys come out, support me like you always do and I believe you will. See you guys soon.'
It's an exciting build-up for Reinier de Ridder, one we have no doubt will be an edge-of-your-seat moment. 'Abu Dhabi is my place,' he says — and it'll be even more special if he walks away with the win, just like he did over 10 years ago at the Jiu Jitsu Championship.

Marcus McGhee grateful for surprise UFC Fight Night clash with Petr Yan while Russian eyes another title shot

Marcus McGhee is aiming to make the most of a surprise opportunity when he takes on former champion and third-ranked bantamweight Petr Yan in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night at Etihad Arena on Saturday. The American goes into the contest with a four-win record in the promotion and 10-1 overall record in a stacked 12-fight card headlined by the middleweight contest between Robert Whittaker and Reinier de Ridder. McGhee, 35, admits he was shocked to get the call to compete against the Russian who has fought 14 times in the UFC – winning his last two fights – with an overall 18-5 record. A win here will move McGhee to the top three in the category, but he remains realistic, saying he needs another one or two fights to earn a title contest. 'I guess they didn't find an opponent much higher up the ranks and I got the opportunity, which I'm glad for, and to feature in the co-main fight in the card,' McGhee said at a media event on Wednesday. 'In this game, anything can happen at any given time. This is one of those unforgiving sports, so I'm always just focused and grateful on the task at hand.' With both McGhee and Yan known for their striking, the American added: 'I know we're going to stand and trade, but I definitely think that we're going to hit the ground for sure, too. 'Honestly, I don't hit the ground as much as well, but I have grappling skills as well, and I definitely see us hitting the ground at some point as well. So I definitely think that up and down is going to be there. It's going to be a full mixed martial arts fight.' Yan is hoping to cement his place for another title fight with victory over the No 12 ranked McGhee. He originally became bantamweight champion at UFC Fight Island in Abu Dhabi in 2020 after demolishing Jose Aldo. 'I don't think there's anybody who is ranked higher or somebody who deserves this more than I do,' he said of a potential rematch against title holder Georgian Merab Dvalishvili, against whom he lost via unanimous decision in 2023. 'With the confidence and a win on the night, I'll make sure to cement my place as the next contender. At this moment I have my own goals, my own ambitions to fight for the title.' The main card also includes a middleweight clash between Shara Magomedov and Marc-Andre Barriault, Asu Almabayev's flyweight clash with Jose Ochoa and Nikita Krylov and Bogdan Guskov's lightweight bout.

Robert Whittaker eyes redemption against Reinier de Ridder at UFC Fight Night in Abu Dhabi

Robert Whittaker is out to prove he remains a leading contender in the middleweight division as he takes on Reinier de Ridder in the headline contest of UFC Abu Dhabi Fight Night at Etihad Arena on Saturday. The Australian, 34, suffered a first-round loss in just three minutes and 34 seconds when he was forced to tap out following a face-crank by Khamzat Chimaev in October last year. Whittaker appears to have put that defeat behind him as the former UFC middleweight champion returns to the octagon more determined than ever to earn another title shot in the world's lead MMA promotion. Whittaker arrives with a 26-8 career record. Interestingly, he has never lost twice in a row since his welterweight days in 2013/14. De Ridder, 34, has a 20-2 record and has been on a roll since moving out of One Championship, in which he held two titles. The Dutchman stopped Russian Magomedmurad Khasaev by TKO in the first round at UAE Warriors 51 and has then gone undefeated in three UFC appearances. He's now back in the octagon for the main contest and for his fifth fight in one year. 'He's a well accomplished fighter,' Whittaker said of De Ridder in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. 'He's been around the track many times, fought for titles, had titles, he's got a lot of divisions. It's going to be a hard fight. He's a veteran by himself. And I look forward to the test that comes up.' The Australian believes he has the striking power to tackle De Ridder, a black belt in both judo and jiu-jitsu. 'That's the plan. I'm fast. I'm striking. I'm just going to find holes and openings to close the night. He's a good striker as well. He understands what my strengths are,' he said. 'Well, I think I'm pretty confident. Obviously, I think of my strengths … Well, one of my strengths is the fact that I'm self-orientated. I prefer striking, but if it goes to the ground, I'm more prepared than just the foot. 'If it goes to the ground, it's one of my choices. I'm a striker, I like to strike. My path of victory is to stay in my mix, get my hands on it. You might have it better than before.' Whittaker is returning to Abu Dhabi for his fourth fight, and said he always enjoyed competing in the UAE capital. 'I enjoy fighting here every time I come to put on a show. I've been fortunate enough to fight here, like, four times now. It's always been a good experience,' he added. His challenger De Ridder is competing in a main UFC event for the first time, just 12 months after he appeared at the UAE Warriors. De Ridder feels his experience in judo and jiu-jitsu, combined with his training with Dagestani wrestlers will come in handy against Whittaker. 'I have prepared well, sparred against Dagestani wrestlers and worked with a Dagestani coach to bring in more variety to my ground fighting,' he said. 'I like the Russian style of wrestling, especially Dagestani and Chechen styles which has more judo influences, and I can use them to trip and throw opponents. 'I try to be in the moment as much as possible. It was crazy I was fighting in the UAE Warriors a year ago and I feel it's going through the full circuit returning for the UFC Fight Night. Obviously looking forward for it and hopefully a win.'
