Going green: Power Cement to install 7.5MW wind plant

In a significant step toward sustainability, Power Cement Limited (POWER) has announced plans to set up a 7.5MW wind power project, which is expected to go live by FY2026.
The listed cement maker shared the development during its corporate briefing session on Wednesday.
The project will utilise Goldwind turbine with a capacity of 7,500 kW and will follow a rental model, similar to the company's existing solar agreements.
'Expected completion is targeted within FY2026,' the company stated.
Upon the project's completion, wind energy would account for 11% of Power Cement's energy mix.
The company already generates 34% and 6% of its energy from WHRS (Waste Heat Recovery System) and solar, respectively. Whereas, the remaining 60% comes from HESCO.
Founded in 1981, Power Cement Limited stands as the flagship Company of Arif Habib Group, a prominent financial and industrial conglomerate. The factory site of the company is located at Motorway M-9, Nooriabad, Sindh.
The company was previously known as Al-Abbas Cement Limited until its acquisition in 2010 by the Arif Habib Group.
Presently, the company has three manufacturing lines, with a cumulative nameplate clinker production capacity of 10,700 TPD, with total annual capacity of 3.21 million tons.
The company is one of the largest players in Pakistan's South zone with a total annual cement production capacity of 3.37 million tons, 11,235 TPD.
The announcement aligns with a broader industry shift in Pakistan toward renewable energy as companies look to cut energy costs and reduce reliance on the national grid.
Last month, Thatta Cement Company Limited completed and commissioned a 4.8MW wind power project at its plant in Thatta, Sindh.
Earlier this month, Ali Asghar Textile Mills Limited (AATM), a former textile unit turned logistic service provider, informed it was developing a 1,00KW (1MW) solar power project, which has now entered the execution phase.
In March, Tariq Corporation Limited announced plans to set up a 200KW solar power system at its facility.

PM commends Leghari for power sector reforms

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif has applauded Minister for Power, Sardar Awais Leghari and Secretary Power, Dr Fakhre Alam Irfan for their outstanding performance in steering the government's reform agenda in the power sector through a particularly challenging period. In appreciation letters to both the top men of Power Division, the prime minister stated that the reduction of Rs 780 billion in circular debt, bringing the overall stock down to Rs 1,614 billion, was indeed a Herculean task made possible through 'your persistent effort and effective collaboration across institutions.' 'The successful renegotiation of Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with more than 35 Independent Power Producers (IPPs), including the termination of six contracts, is a historic intervention. These efforts have resulted in savings of approximately Rs 3.6 trillion for the national exchequer,' stated the letter. The prime minister further stated that the overall tariff reduction of Rs 8.35 per unit compared to the previous year has delivered tangible relief to power consumers, not only easing the burden on households but also invigorating industrial demand, with lasting impacts across multiple sectors of the economy. The introduction of people-centric initiatives such as 'Apna Meter, Apni Reading' exemplifies a responsive and modern approach to governance that will help reshape public trust in the power sector. 'I congratulate you and your team on these commendable strides, and I trust that your continued efforts will further strengthen Pakistan's energy security and economic resilience,' the prime minister added. Panels formed to address issues facing gas sector

ISLAMABAD: The government has established four specialised panels to address key issues in the gas sector, including circular debt, LNG tariffs, unaccounted-for gas (UFG) losses, and the increasing share of LNG in the national gas system, official sources told Business Recorder. According to sources, a Committee on Implementing Structural Reforms in the Petroleum Sector— formed by the Prime Minister and chaired by the Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources— has convened multiple meetings to deliberate on these matters. The composition of the Committee is as following: Minister for Petroleum (Convener), Advisor to Prime Minister on Privatisation, National Coordinator on Energy Reforms, Lt General Muhammad Zafar Iqbal (retd) Secretary, Power Division, Secretary, Petroleum Division, Secretary, Cabinet Division/ representative and Chairman, OGRA. Pakistan faces LNG glut: minister The Minister for Petroleum emphasised that while the foundational work for the committee's assignment had been done through its Integrated Energy Study (Woodmac) conducted by the Petroleum Division, the present focus is to chalk out an implementation plan. He highlighted the importance of aligning the Committee's recommendations with the preparation of the Annual Delivery Plan (ADP) to be settled with LNG suppliers. The representative of Power Division commented that challenges need to be addressed and disruptions need to be looked into. The Chair responded that the tactical issues would be discussed later and, presently, the focus needs to be on sustainability of the gas sector and how LNG over supply/ less off-take is affecting it. The Secretary Petroleum framed the key issues to be addressed by the Committee, namely: rationalisation of gas tariffs (for both indigenous and imported gas), synchronisation of LNG demand with the power sector along with resolution of circular debt within the gas sector. He noted that most of the required data and foundational analysis is already available through the Woodmac study and will serve as the basis for the committee's deliberations. The Chair commented that Committee should focus on implementation as a Plan. The Committee needs to focus on 2026 ADP's preparation and to devised policy of Integrated Energy strategy for Pakistan. The Committee constituted a sub-committee comprising Secretary Power (Lead), DG Gas, MD SNGPL and a nominee from the Task Force. The chair can co-opt any member if he/she deems it necessary to effectively carry out the work and decided to constitute the following (ToRs) for the four sub-committees: Subcommittee 1: work out a comprehensive proposal to synchronise LNG demand of the power sector in a manner that ensures timely and adequate supply without causing abrupt fluctuations in demand. GCEP submission to Woodmac to be considered; and identify causes and propose solutions to avoid sudden changes in LNG requirements by the power sector that lead to diversion of LNG cargo to other sectors. Net Proceeds Differential (NDP) claims, if any, arising due to reduced off-take by Power Division to be considered. Sub-Committee -2 comprising Muhammad Ali (Lead), a nominee of KPMG, Islamabad and any co-opted member to formulate proposals to deal with circular debt stock in the gas sector. Sub-Committee 3 is on LNG tariff rationalisation. Its scope will formulate proposals for LNG tariff rationalisation by revisiting all compositions of tariff (terminal charges, importer margins and LNG service agreement charges etc.) RLNG demand maximization options to be proposed (especially in domestic sector). Sub-Committee 4- domestic gas tariff efficiency and transparency will address efficiency and transparency in tariff for domestic gas tariff including revenue requirements of the gas utilities, actual UFG losses taking into account growing LNG share in gas system, etc. Sui Companies Return on Assets formula revision to be considered to bring better efficiencies. Thar coal, renewables make Sindh energy basket of Pakistan: CM Murad

KARACHI: With one of the largest indigenous coal reserves in Thar and significant renewable energy potential, Sindh is the energy basket of Pakistan and can lead national progress through its diverse energy sources. Speaking at the Sindh Energy Diversity Conference organized by Energy Update in collaboration with the Government of Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, Chief Minister Sindh, highlighted that Thar's coal deposits are equivalent to the energy reserves of Saudi Arabia, Iran and Kuwait. Chief Minister Shah shared that the Thar coal project was initially conceived in the 1990s under the leadership of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and was eventually realized through one of the most successful public-private partnerships of Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) in Thar Block II. This pioneering initiative disproved the myth that Thar coal, being lower-grade lignite, cannot be used to produce electricity. He added that Thar coal is now generating 1320MW of low-cost electricity in Block-II, powering households and industries across Pakistan. Moreover, an inclusive development approach has been followed, where almost every household in Thar Block-II is now solarized in line with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's vision that the people of Thar must benefit first from this progress. Nasir Hussain Shah, Sindh Minister for Energy and Planning & Development, pointed out that coal gasification plans are underway to expand Thar coal utilization to other key sectors, such as fertilizer and cement, which will reduce pressure on foreign exchange reserves. Higher domestic production of fertilizers will help ensure an abundant and affordable supply of urea for farmers, ensuring greater food security for Pakistan. The Sindh government remains focused on supporting industries and delivering solar home systems to underserved communities, Minister Nasir said. Commending the Government of Sindh for its continued support, Amir Iqbal, CEO of SECMC, said that the Thar Block-II development served as a proof of concept and successfully marked six years of commercial operations on July 10 this year. He noted that 'SECMC supplies coal to three Independent Power Producers (IPPs), energizing over 3 million households and contributing to foreign exchange savings of around US$1.6 billion since inception. These plants consistently rank among the highest on the merit order, reaffirming Thar coal as the most cost-effective baseload fuel.' Amir added that Phase-III mine expansion is underway to make coal even cheaper and add another 660 MW power plant based on Thar coal. He also highlighted SECMC's community investments of providing quality education to over 5000 students with 35% female enrolment, free healthcare access to more than 350,000 patients since inception, and support for the Government of Sindh's solarization efforts covering 3,150 households in Thar Block-II.
